Curious about the boat buying process? Or already shopping and have questions? The brokerage (use) boat buying process is often compared to real estate and although there are a ton of similarities, there is a set framework of steps that lead to a successful boat purchase!
As a yacht broker - this is what I do EVERYDAY! And I like to be of service to boat buyers, helping them get the most boat for the dollar alllll while have a fun and pleasant experience...
This video is a breakdown of the STEP BY STEP Brokerage Boat Buying Process:
1. Shopping (00:35)
2. Offer Presentation & Negotiation (03:20)
3. Offer Acceptance ... "Under Agreement" (05:08)
4. The Marine Survey(s) Process & Reporting (05:21)
5. The Acceptance of Vessel (07:56)
6. Closing (11:14)
A couple of key tips I'll hit on in this video are:
Budget Planning for this NEW purchase
Important data points to research BEFORE presenting your offer
Utilizing THE BEST Industry Experts for your Marine Survey Inspections
My LOVE of the Boat Binder for documenting a history of quality service
The importance of Proper Preparation to provide a smooth and successful Closing
Please let me know if you'd like ANY of the following info:
a list of accredited and reputable Marine Surveyors in your area
to be connected with one of my favorite Marine Documentation Specialists
a copy of the BUDGETING SPREADSHEET I like to use with my clients
or more info on the Escrow holdback Purchase Process for off-season boat buying!

Very clear summary of the process. Thank you. I would like to to ask a few things (1) as a UK citizen are there any special conditions in buying in USA and registering overseas or in another state eg Delaware (2) I would appreciate if you could send me the spreadsheet as I have one of my own but it's maybe not thorough (3) what are the various costs eg registration, legal, marine documenter, your fee? Thanks. I'm considering buying a 36ft boat in Florida for a budget of $30,000 with a back up fund of $20,000 in February 2022

It would be nice if you would have described agency relationships and who compensates a boat broker for the work they’ve done. Would be nice if you would speak about the cost associated with the survey the haul out fees if required, a bit about the insurance process another words how does somebody document their experience that allows the insurance company to issue them a policy for the use of that vessel. These are some of the things that you did not address that I think are important and would be valuable to a prospective buyer or seller.

hi Charlotte I'm hoping you're still doing the buyer brokering. I'm just beginning to start looking for a boat. I'm looking at mostly either new or maybe a year old vessels. I'm very interested in 64' Absolute Navetta it's a year old but still being sold as a new boat. What are your thoughts on that?

Are surveyors able to check out an engine on a boat on the dry? Are they able to hook up water coolant and bring the engine online or does this cause excessive vibration on the stands or lift? Thank you great channel love your information and enthusiasm.
@CharlotteKinkade
@CharlotteKinkade 3 года назад
Great set of questions John- it does depend on the engine.. big disclaimer here: I’m not a marine surveyor nor am I an engine technician or mechanic BUT I know know that you can get at least some of the info you’d be looking for. For example: an outboard can be started on the hard (either using an earmuff set up with a fresh water hose or with a bucket/ basin system. Some yards even have a tank to put the whole boat in to test) and with these newer outboards- a certified tech can plug in their computer for a read out of the history of oil alarms and high temps and etc. You’re not going to get every data point possible if you’re relegated to testing while on the hard. It’s more of a calculated risk assessment.. an escrow agreement could come in handy in this kind of situation! If you’re looking to test a larger inboard Diesel engine- you won’t be seeing if she’s holding compression as she should at various loads nor will you be able to run the engine up to temp for long enough to pull oil samples for testing... every deal is a bit different. I would be happy to connect with you directly and chat over these points if you’d be interested- my cell phone number is: (207) 807-3545 and I’m available most days, business hours EST. Hope that little bit of info helped for your situation- and thanks for your kind words about my channel!

As a first time buyer/looker, is the international market setup the same way? Also are there resources in the research phase to determine the boat value vs repairs, in order to see if your getting a good deal?
@CharlotteKinkade
@CharlotteKinkade 3 года назад
The international market can be very similar - sometimes the taxes are very different if you’re crossing borders - It’s fair game to request service records and request estimates from a boats yard for any necessary work...

If you buy brand new boats use hard cash dont borrow, its losing value from day one and youll be paying interest on your loan, buy second hand for the lowest price and only refit parts that really need it, then sell.

tHANK YOU so much for your video. Very informative. I live in Spain how would a buying process here be?... New Bering 77 for example. Start at 5.2 Million
@CharlotteKinkade

There are a LOT of similarities with the international market- I just sold a boat into Italy from here in Mass- a few more logistics and tax regulations but I'm happy to answer any questions I can- My direct line is +1 (207) 807-3545 and I have Whats App and Zoom is that's easiest for you!

Would you not get the marine survey second?
@CharlotteKinkade

Putting in the offer first- reserves her from the market for you. This order of operations protects you as the buyer (because you’re about to spend money inspecting a boat that’s not yours yet- if you do that without an accepted offer, anyone else can scoop the boat out from under you). That’s just one reason to go this route- the standard Purchase and Sale Agreement is written to give the Buyer the ability to walk away for ANY reason- up until the Vessel Acceptance deadline... I’d be happy to review that boilerplate agreement and all its included legal ease if you’d like!

Don’t buy it! Just take a large fist full of $100.00 bills and set the free out the window of your car. Save a few though so you can hand some to a buddy as payment to kick you in the ba…..well you get it. I’m a boat owner by the way.

What your number of years
@CharlotteKinkade
@CharlotteKinkade 3 года назад
Short answer: full time since about 2015/2016 If you’d like to go wayyyy back: I coached junior sailing every summer, starting in 2007 all the way up through 2012. Post grad- I coached High School sailing while working as a project coordinator for a utility company for three years, then became a Program Director for a local community sailing organization. I also did some side hustle marketing/ PR work and PRO work for a handful of regattas throughout New England over this time period.. Then in 2014/2015 I took an apprenticeship at a sail loft and local boat yard to start dipping my toes into the more hands-on side of yachting and service. Loved it- started taking crew or deckhand/ mate positions for Yacht delivery work- loved spending every moment aboard. Started working for a great mentor of mine who had his own freelance boat repair company and learned a ton about the craft and skills behind fiberglass repair, gelcoat repairs, basic wiring issues, brightwork maintenance and upkeep... over this time period I also bought my first J24 and did my own DIY refit. Then I took the plunge and moved down to FL to work as a deck/ stew- I already had competed my STCW 95 to work on yachts and upgraded my USCG license.. I was the only female in my 100ton masters class and had the highest marks in a class of 30 for the exam. While I was in FL I got the offer to come back to my hometown of Kennebunkport and run Chicks Marina. I was Manager of operations there for three years.. ran the year round maintenance and service of 40 plus vessels and the most successful transient yachting destination in Kennebunkport.. and that brings up to September 2019 when I joined the team at East Coast Yacht Sales. I’ll by sitting for my CPYB (certified professional yacht broker) exam this September 2021. If you’d like to learn more about me and/or view my current listings and some of my sold boats- I’d encourage you to visit the ECYS site and my profile page there. Also- feel free to follow my on Instagram @AhoyCharlotte - and I’m always happy to chat boats and boating endeavors- my cell phone number is: (207) 807-3545

I’ve also competitively sailboat raced with a variety of programs throughout these number of years- this includes being a founding Memeber of the Sea Bags Sailing Team. I currently own a very speedy - sea foam and orange - J24, sail number 292. Which we did a full rebuild/ refit on over the winter of 2018.. and an antique Boston Whaler 17 “custom” which my SO and I are currently in the process of re-doing. I’ve been a member of the Portland Yacht Club since 2014 and currently volunteer as part of their membership committee. Being on or around the water and an active part of my local boating seen is something I’m beyond passionate about. This summer I’m excited about also having a seasonal slip at the new Fore Points marina in Portland, Maine- a state of the art local marina where two of my new 2021 Axopar build clients will be keeping their new boats as well. Hope that answers your question Joel!
