"There is no "1" Key, so you have to write out "one") No, many Typewriters do not have a "1" Key, you actually use the lower case L, and it will just look exactly like the 1. This Key is designed to be "Two in one". They done this to save space on the keyboard to make space for other "Useful" Keys and functions (or at least what they thought what was useful) but also to save Materials and Money in Production. There are also many Models which do not have the 0 Key, in that case you just use the Capital O. You're welcome.

+mombasadele No necessarily, some people struggle to write when sat at a computer. My friend at college couldn't write when sat at a computer. We were on a programming course, yet for whatever reason she struggled to write her essays on a computer. She found it much easier to draft them out by hand and then type them up later.

+mombasadele It depends...if someone is using a typewriter just to look "cool" then yeah that's a hipster. But if they brought the typewriter to Starbucks because maybe they just wanted to relax and have a drink while writing, then that's not being a hipster. I've brought my typewriters to Starbuck before when I was working on a short story. I wanted to get out of my house for a while, and the good thing about using a mechanical typewriter is you can take it anywhere.
@mombasadele479

If I was in a Starbucks and saw and heard a guy writing on a typewriter I would've been annoyed with the sound immediately. Ruining my moment of zen. I think typewriters are cool but carrying one over to Starbucks is more of a statement/hipster thing than anything else. You could've just written at home. Made some coffee at home. Sorry, but I don't buy it. Writing on a typewriter is better for composing sentences and thinking things through before writing, but I would rather have a Macbook in a Starbucks any day of the year. You wouldn't get to concentrate as well in a public place like that anyways. And I was answering William Peng here, who was clearly out after being cool.

How to buy a typewriter: it's harder than it seems. You have to find the right one or ones that'll suit you on the emotional level, and it's all how the typewriter looks to you. The appearance of the typewriter will determine your motivation to produce work on it. I could make some suggestions to new typists looking for their first typewriter. For a smooth look, go with a Hermes 3000, an Underwood/Olivetti, or a 50's Smith Corona or Remington portable. For those that want a big bulky old thing, go with a Royal No. 10, an Underwood No. 5, Remington Standard, or a Woodstock. For those looking to get a really old portable, look at the Corona, Royal, or Underwood portables. For those who want something that looks batshit crazy, go with the Oliver.

Let me add to your list: For those who want a machine with real lasting power, you can't go wrong with a Royal KMM, KMG, HH, FP, and MC. Underwood Rhythm Shift, SX-100, SX-150, Golden Touch, Touch Masters 2 and 5 are great machines also. Smith-Corona manual and electric portables are also superb typers. Brothers are great microtypers. Tinny sounds like tin cans but they are rough, rugged, and reliable mighty mites.

In my city, I found a store that sells and repairs classic typewriters, they have some amazing ones and running 100%, and with original parts, the owner is an enthusiastic old man, and he LOVES the stuff he sells and repairs. I saw a red Olivetti one that caught my eye and it's not really that expensive. They have Olimpia's and Printaform, but I've settled my mind, the red one is for me... Not bad, but I have a few things to point out - what you call the "rolling pad" is called the Planten. Also, it's very common for portable mechanical typewriters to not have a 1 key, and in that case you would just use a lower case "l." You don't need to type out "one." The other thing I would mention is that it is VERY common when you find an old typewriter for the keys to be sticking. That's no big deal, the mechanism just needs to be cleaned and oiled. You'll rarely ever find a typewriter in 100 percent perfect condition, they almost always need a lot of cleaning because they've been sitting around for years. So you shouldn't get discouraged if the keys are sticking, or if the carriage moves a little stiff, etc. As long as the mechanical parts are in good condition with nothing missing, it is easy to get it working again after you clean it. Antique typewriters were built like tanks, they don't break. I've "rescued" a bunch of old typewriters that were filthy and stuck solid...keys were sticking, the carriage would barely move, etc. After a thorough cleaning, they came back to life and started working great again. It's cool that people are getting back into things like this. The biggest advantage with using a typewriter is that you have less distractions. It helps you to be more focused when you're writing. And of course, if you use a mechanical typewriter, you don't need electricity, so you can take it anywhere.

How would you clean it?
@johntapp1650
@johntapp1650 4 года назад
@@SayonDragon15 It depends in which parts you want to clean. For the outer shell, keys, and rubber parts like the platen and feet, a general purpose cleaner usually does the trick. But for all the metal parts, I have found that nothing works like automatic transmission fluid like Ford's Mercon Five. Stinks like a pound of wet fish but it works really great. Clean your type bars, clean and lube the rest of your machine with it. Get out all the excess though. You shouldn't have many, if any, adjustments to have to make. Most of the time it's snapped spring drum drawbands that sideline these old papermills. I've replaced a many, and I've got the scars to prove it.

@TheSNIP3RsWMD 8 лет назад
Actually you don't have to write out the word "one". To conserve space and limit moving parts a little bit, a lot of models use the lower case "L" to function as the number one as well. Just thought I would let you know. Great video by the way. I am an avid collector of typewriters and these tips are great. Always good to be able to test the machines first.

Thanks for the info, but since my last post I actually bought a vintage one off of Craigslist, a Smith Corona "Silent" portable that dates to 1949. I've heard good things about the Royal Epoch, and I did look into getting one, but at $140 it was a bit too steep for my budget at the time. Ended up paying only $40 for my Silent. It might not be new, but it's in such great shape all I needed to do to it was give it a light cleaning, a new ribbon, and some oil, and it's been humming along as if it was fresh out of the factory. Even with 100% perfect feedback it’s still a gamble. I’ve purchased twelve typewriters on EBay. Two of them were perfectly described, one was actually better than expected but all the rest had some issue that was not stated in the description. The problem is that many sellers of these machines are not the original owners and are not familiar with their functions. They might press a few keys, see the type bars move, hit the return, hear the bell and decide that it’s in working condition and just needs a new ribbon. I would never recommend anyone buy a used typewriter off of EBay expecting it to work flawlessly. But if you do just plan on having a full service done by a professional.

Thanks for the info. Brings back many memories of my typing class in high school. As for the German typewriter it's most likely the z is switched with the y. I know because I was typing on a German keyboard (computer) and since I learned touch typing it was very hard to stop typing a z when my finger is reaching where the y should have been. One thing I was thinking of is at least manual typewriters don't get hacked. I like what you said too, if power goes out you can still work. Love that you can scan into the computer and convert it to a word file.

I also like the Olympia typewriters and I have a SM7, SM9, and a SG1 desktop office machine. The SM7 is a nice machine and raises the carriage, as your machine does, for making capital letters. However, I prefer the ease of using the type basket shift on the other two models for making capital letters.

I have an SM9 too. It's in excellent condition and is a beautiful looking machine. But to me, the keys feel kind of "heavy." The mechanism is smooth and works perfectly fine, but the keys just have a heavier feel than my other typewriters. I guess it's also because I've mostly used computers. Writing on a mechanical typewriter takes some getting used to! It is a lot more rewarding though, and plus I like being able to take a typewriter anywhere to write and not have to worry about power. Sometimes I like sitting outside to write, because there are less distractions and it's more relaxing.

@TheWaterbug101
@TheWaterbug101 8 лет назад
Yes, I have thirteen total. Four of which are Smith Corona electrics that provide some backup for spare parts if needed for each other. I picked up a Royal 440 manual desktop manual model which is probably the easiest to type on because it takes very little effort. Another good one is the Tower (Sears model from the 1950's) portable that is basically the same as the Smith Corona Sterling. However, my favorite of all is the Olympia SG1 desktop because of it's engineering and ease of use. The oldest one is an Underwood No. 5 from 1921, and it needs to be cleaned and restored when I can find time to work on it.

John Tate Thanks for your comment! Really I’m strictly a purist. I think personally if you want to typewrite as a hobby or as your method of writing, it’s a lot more raw to have the classic manual typewriter. Also, I’ve noticed when buying electric ones-especially if they are old-that often they come with lots of issues with the mechanisms and such. For example, the power cable may not be working, or the ink cartridge is super fancy and harder to find that just your average 8$ ink ribbon on Amazon. To each their own! It’s just my opinion. If electric works for you, by all means, my friend. As long as the words get on the pages, that’s all that matters! :)

Thanks much for the info. Very helpful. I just bought a 1938 Royal which is in great working order. Am planning on starting several short children's books as well as a few other's and want to use my typewriter. Just to be sure... when you finish your novel or stories, you scan all of them and then send them off to the publisher? How difficult is it to scan to a Word Doc?
@kevinKLITZ
@kevinKLITZ 8 лет назад
+David Miller You actually scan all of the pages and the program converts it to a word doc. Publishers typically don't take submissions, unfortunately. They usually require you to have an agent, unless it's an indie publisher. Great question!

Hi Kenvin, Question here. Since there are many models out there, which one is a good one? there seems to be a sea of Typewriters to choose, so many models and brands, this and that, the way its been built etc... What would your suggestion be Kevin? Many thanks.

Most from the late thirties to the early 60s are well made if they are American. Also Germany and England.

Dude this was a fantastic video. I really needed help with buying one and the brand I found was also Olympia. you explained everything really well, all the questions I had you answered so thankyou very much. I had a question, I'm planning on buying an olympia SM8 from Amazon however it's like £35 and the seller says it's literally New except for the few scratches do you think I should still buy it?
@kevinKLITZ
@kevinKLITZ 7 лет назад
Amarah Malik I would see if he has a return policy. If he does then he probably put his confidence in you liking the item. If he hasnt, I would just get the Royal Epoch on Amazon. It's brand new and looks great.

why is an Olympia preferable for writing manuscripts vs say a Royal Epoch or Remington?
@kevinKLITZ
@kevinKLITZ 8 лет назад
+nerdygearhead (zack) It really depend on the look you want. Some are faster than others, some have better looking fonts and slap harder. You just have to research what you like. Honestly though, I hear the Epoch is awesome. Look into that.

@TypewriterJustice

ideally you should use at least 24lb paper. most copy paper is only 20lb, so if that's all you have just be sure to use two sheets

No one should be buying one of these on eBay unless the seller knows how to secure fragile items. Many eBay sellers will throw a precision machine with moving parts into a one ply cardboard box for shipping. And then the buyer is literally pouring it out of the box when it arrives.
@kevinKLITZ
@kevinKLITZ 7 лет назад
Die Donner Understandable. That's why you must make sure they have a return policy. What I have found of sellers that have one-especially on vintage items like these-are much more professional about shipment. If a seller has a return policy, they are going to make sure the product is something you want and will be much mire caring with it as opposed to a seller who has no return policy. Just my two cents.

Write all day long on a typewriter and not get tired? You must be joking. When I was at uni (graduated in 1980) I wrote all my essays on a manual typewriter. It was exhausting having to bash those keys. On leaving uni, I bought an electric typewriter; now THAT was less tiring. When that fell apart, I bought a daisy wheel electronic typewriter which I HATED!!! My first laptop in 2004 was heaven. I can type quietly at night. For distraction free I have two AlphaSmart Neos.

muskndusk Unfortunately it sounds as though you can’t hang with the big dogs. I would type for hours on a typewriter and it was seamless.

muskndusk Haha, you’re awesome. I was teasin’. Glad you got the joke. :) It’s just preference, honestly. If you want to know the truth, I write mostly on the pages app on my iPhone. To me that feels most comfortable and I get the most done. But I do know that typewriters exist, and it should be an option for writers. All preference. :)

Mr & Mrs Vintage Typewriters Whoa!! Would I love to be in on this!! First of all just what IS a perfect typewriter? Is it one that never rusts? Does it always have a good ribbon? Does it never stick or need maintenance? Is it always prettier than everyone else’s, never needing any dusting? Does the print stay straight all the time? Who had these and how much did you pay for such perfection?!! We’re these typewriters designed for Yuppies in mind? Yucchh!! I think I’ll just take my old imperfect lopsided butt and go play with my imperfect typewriters.

Owl11Vlogs Start going to thrift stores. You really want to make sure it has a return policy online. You have to follow the steps on testing it. Or at least the online person (with no return policy) making a video testing it.
