Every civil engineering student might have heard this term anchorage length and it is often quoted as 50 times diameter of the bar in his studies and work life. Is 50 times dia really the anchorage length.
This video discusses in depth what it means by 50 times dia of rebar. Why it is 50 times. Is it really 50 times? Is it always 50 times dia? What one can do if the anchorage length is slightly short than required.
The video also explains different ways anchorage can be achieved. Many a time even straight bars can ensure required anchorage. Some times one will have to bend it and some times U bars may be needed.
The video elaborately discusses when we will have these use cases in site and design.
A careful understanding of basis of calculation is very much required for both site engineers and structural design engineers. While it helps the structural design engineer to appreciate the site issues and the construction sequences, it helps site engineers to appreciate the need of anchorage and what can be done if there is a slight shortage after tieing the bars. A careful understanding can avoid un necessary abortive work at site.
When one says design of beams, mostly the flexural strength, stability and durability are emphasised and this requirement of bond strength is often considered to meet the requirement by default. This is not correct and a careful understanding is absolutely needed.
So this video is an attempt to add value to young aspiring structural engineering students and to encourage them to focus on these technical points than concentrating only on etabs tutorials and other structural design software.

Can you elaborate? If you mean about formwork design,it may not be too soon :-)

please explain the meaning of this clause ( Anchorage length of straight bar in compression shall be equal to the development length of bar in compression )

@@nikhilrana7458 As mentioned, it should be calculated as per the formula given for calculating the development length as per clause 26.2.1 in IS 456
