We go over some common rafter calculations, and I show you how to find and cut a bird's mouth! Roof framing is one of the more fun p(arts) of carpentry in my opinion so it's always nice to brush up on the skills!

Nice job, young man. Most "RU-vidrs" make this explanation too confusing because they are "makers" and not workers. Keep up the good work.

How do you know the height of your ridge beam? For your example 6 for the pitch x 5 for the width =30” to the bottom of the Beam? Or should I figure the height above the birds mouth? Sorry I’m new to framing but want to learn.
@ManOfMiniHats
@ManOfMiniHats 5 месяцев назад
Your ridge is where the peaks of your rafters are meeting. So in the example the 30” would be from the top of the ridge, to the top of the beam your rafters are sitting on. The ridge height won’t get you the measurement for where your bird mouth lands, that measurement would come from multiplying the horizontal span times the number on your framing square, and that is the start of the birds mouth. Don’t apologize my man, that’s what this channel is for! I hope this helps, and let me know if I need to try to explain it another way

Excellent video. I missed the part how you got 19.xx inches. I've watched it over and over but I just don't see it.
@ManOfMiniHats
@ManOfMiniHats 11 дней назад
@@mkole3262 I only had a small piece of material so I wanted to keep it pretty short so the mock building I did was only 3’ wide total. We take half of that and multiply it by the pitch of your roof (this is the part you use a framing square for) in this example I did a 6 pitch which is 13.42”. So I multiply half of the linear ft (1.5’), and the number on my framing square (in my case 13.42) and then I subtract half of the width of your ridge material (if using a 2x10, you are subtracting 3/4 inch from the product of the last calculation). I hope this helps!

I thought it was a lot cooler when I first got it. I've found that the hinge point actually makes the line not straight so I wouldn't recommend this one!

So i am putting a shed roof on a shipping container. I plan on 3/12 to match the house and cause i have to stay 11’6” max height and container is 8’6. I just finished building a house from scratch with cathedral ceilings, but my buddy did all the rafters cutting. I’ve done literally everything else so your video was really helpful and explaining the tailpiece measurement or overhang I’m not clear on.

Awesome demonstration. Most guys go too far into calculations when dummies like me can't digest that much at once. Now it makes sense.

Why do you cross out and use 16, where did that number come from?
@ManOfMiniHats
@ManOfMiniHats 11 месяцев назад
Yes I’m sorry I forgot to mention that! The smallest mark we have on a standard tape measure is 1/16th inch increments (in the US). With that being said when we are converting from a decimal to a fraction (or vise versa) we want the closest representation that we can get based off our tools. Multiplying the decimal by 16, will give you the numerator for the fraction

great video! I'm putting up a post frame shed right now. Do you know the maximum depth of birds mouth that can be cut in a 2x6?
@ManOfMiniHats
@ManOfMiniHats Год назад
Thank you! A good rule of thumb is no more than 25% of the depth of the lumber, if you are spanning more than 12’ from post to ridge, I would suggest bumping up to a 2x8! If you’re worried about landing on your post, just notch the top 4” of your post to 3.5” wide and act as if it’s sitting on top of a regular 2x4 wall
