How To Calculate Compass Error by Azimuth of a Star! A short video where I explain how to calculate a ships Gyro or Magnetic compass error from a bearing of a Star in this case Arcturus, by calculating the direction (or azimuth) of the Star.
Ask any questions in the comments - I’ll do my best to answer them.

NOTE: This video makes use of selected pages from the British Admiralty Nautical Almanac (Admiralty Publication NP314). The example uses the 2016 version of the publication so if you’re doing the calculation for a different year the numbers won’t be the same.

can i use ABC table or the ABC by calculator with these aside from that formula given above?

You can use ABC if you wish, the formula I use is based on the ABC formula but combined into a single step.

Dear Alistair, could you please to show us formula for Az in right view. I mean how this formula exactly viewing according to mathematics rules. And is it possible to show us one example with digits for finding Az. Many thks in advnce.

Where did get the gyro bearing of the star? It should be thru the gyro repeater right? Pls tell us how?

Yes, you would normally obtain your bearing through a gyro repeater on the bridge wings.

Does it make a difference if the Declination is south? would you consider that a negative number? and same for E? thanks Harry P.S great video by the way!

@Harry Bould - Sorry for taking so long to reply - hopefully you've worked it out by now, but if not; Yes, if Declination is south you treat it as a negative value in the azimuth formula. If you're referring to the longitude being East, then yes, you would subtract it as the event is occurring before it would occur at Greenwich which is what everything in the Almanac is referenced too. can we use star finder for azimuth

Ashutosh bisht no as the Star Finder only gives an approximation of the bearing of the star or planet, using it to work out a compass error would introduce a potentially huge error.

I calculate Az = 15.32. What's wrong?

Depends what you're keying into the calculator, I've tried missing brackets and -ve signs but can't replicate that answer - it is possible you are missing one of the brackets - if you have a look at the Azimuth of the Sun video it explains the formula in a bit more detail.

Why is it N 74.99 E shouldn't it be S 74.99 W since 74.99 is a positive azimuth and is between 000-180? Just asking sir, I'm a bit confused.

NedPH Hi, the N 74.99 E comes from the LHA (Local Hour Angle: 275 deg...) being between 180-360 and the result of the Az formula being positive.

What do you mean? Your calculating the bearing of the star using the method explained in the video? If your asking how you know what star you’re looking at - I explain the star finder in another video.
