FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION That the last trick of numbers like 92×98 is not working for some other numbers . In the video I have clearly said that the ending digits should add to 10. like in 54×56 (6+4=10) , 92x98(8+2=10), it won't work for 57×56(7+6=13) I Hope this video amazed you! This trick is awesome! It just feels weird knowing a better method than the teachers teach you…
@icogalero1999
@icogalero1999 3 года назад
Because it not necessary to teach. Why need a mental math if there is a calculator. What is to develop is the critical thinking skills, and that is the basic concept only that as long you know how to multiply then can now use calculator and want to be a competitive and math enthusias then it is good for. Because you cannot teach the learner this if she/he is not interested anymore on mental math. And last in teaching is should always general or it follow the rules

For real though. Going through school they taught us too heavily to rely on calculators, now I'm starting to realize just how terrible that approach to learning was, calculators are useful but developing number sense through mental math is IMO essential to using math, it's more fun too.
@HQBergeron
@HQBergeron 2 года назад
@@SekiberiusWelkesh I grew up before there were calculators, so doing math on paper or in my head where possible was just what we did. Adding a calculator to that in college was a major bonus, but I still knew the math by traditional methods. When it became obvious to me that was not how my sons were being taught in school, I began giving them fun math problems in the car whenever we were driving so they couldn’t use a calculator. They learned how to do quick estimations, tricks for exact calculations, conversions, etc. It didn’t seem like much at the time, but they both turned out to be good at math in school, and one of them scored higher on one of the standardized tests than the school staff had ever seen, even beating out his best friend who had the particular gift of being able to repeat and remember forever any 30 digit number having seen or heard it just once (One time this friend met a girl, also a numbers nerd. He asked what her favorite number was and she rattled off some very long number which had some significance to her but not to him. He says “OMG, that’s my favorite, too!” and repeats it back to her. She bought it and agreed to go on a date with him). Anyway, I think those little number exercises helped my kids with their math very much. Of course, one has to know them to be able to teach the kids, and I’m not sure many teachers these days do, never mind parents.

I'm a Canadian male of a similar age. Math came easily to me, right from the beginning. The metric system has been vastly more useful to me than the old imperial system, because I think like an engineer. Thank you, Pierre! Imperial is harder than metric if you have any kind of worldly view. Barely any two English-speaking countries are completely the same. But metric is the same everywhere. And that's not a small thing.

For the squaring of numbers ending in 5 trick, you don't really have to stop at 95. For example, squaring 105 is easy enough: 10 × 11 = 110, so 105² = 11025. You can apply the multiply by 11 trick to do 11 * 12 in your head and get 115² = 13225. Finally, for something really impressive, you can do 247 × 243 in your head: 24 × 25 = 600, so the answer is 60021.

@zanti4132
@zanti4132 Год назад
@@andykaandyka9897As he says in the video, the ending digits have to add up to 10 for the trick to work. For your example 5 + 7 = 12 ≠ 10, so the trick doesn't apply. Now, you could generalize the trick by adding or subtracting 10 times the difference. For example, to calculate 17 × 15, the end digits add up to 2 more than 10, so add 20. 17 × 15 = 235 + 20 = 255.

So interesting! Personally, I think of 75*75 as dividing it into 3/4 and multiplication with 100. Using quarters is how I approach any multiplication involving 25 or 75. So for example, 68*75 is 68/4=17, then 68-17=51 to get 3/4 of it, then 51*100=5100.

Its nice to know your 2 digit squares ending in 5 ex: 85 ^2 Let A = 85 90x80 = (A+5)(A-5) = A^2 - 25 so u must add 25 to make A^2-25 to equal A^2 Follow that pattern and memorize these and u will be able to shortcut stuff like 88 X 82 or 87 X83 where the average of the 2 numbers ends in 5 and they both have the same 10s place. 15^2 = 20 X 10 + 25 = 225 25^2 = 30 X 20 + 25 = 625 ..... 75^2 = 80 X 70 +25 = 5625 85^2 = 90 X 80 + 25 = 7225 88 x82 = Let A = 85 Then 88x 82 = (A-3)(A+3) = A^2-9 89 x 81 = 85^2 -16= 7225-16 = 7209 88 X 82 = 85^2 -9 = 7225 - 9 = 7216 87 X 83 = 85^2 -4 = 7225- 4 = 7221 86 X 84 = 85^2 -1 = 7225-1 = 7224

Actually it does work. there just an extra step. you take that extra above 10, and you multiply it by your double number. So… 57x56 becomes 3042 becomes 5x3 = 15, added to the middle. so 15+ 04, is 19. 3192. 67x66 becomes 4242 becomes 6x3 = 18, added to the middle so 18+ 24, is 42. 4422. 47x46 becomes 2042 becomes 4x3 = 12 added to the middle so 04 + 12, is 16, 2162. 97x96 becomes 9042 becomes 9x3 = 27 added to the middle so 04 + 27 is 31, 9312. 99x99 becomes 9081 becomes 9x8 = 72 added to the middle so 72 + 08 is 80, 9801.

There are a great number of shortcuts. The problem is not to calculate it, the problem is to recognise the patterns at once, be it (a×10+b)×(b×10+a), or (a+b)×(a+b), or (a+b)×(a-b), or (a-b)×(a-b), or (a-b)×(a-c), or whatever. Anyway, it's useful to write down the table of squares from 0^2=0 or 1^2=1 to 100^2=10000 and look at the regularities. It's not so hard, and it illustrates and facilitates a lot by itself.

Must admit I did too. I have a mental block with numbers. By the time someone gives me their phone number,I have forgotten it. Also, faced with numbers I panic and forget everything. I remember in infant school I was terrified in the maths class, the whole period,I might as well have taken a book to read.I couldn`t take it in. Ok with basics but don`t give me a mental arithmetic problem, as for algebra etc, hopeless. It was just a mental blackout.

Nice trick. I find that the use of bases is easier to remember as far as tricks go as it works for multiplying all numbers, not just the neat ones of 55x55 or multiples of 11. At the end of the day, if you have to remember a trick for every possible scenario and learn it by heart, you could as well have just learned all the answers by heart. So doing 55x55 with a base50 takes me a second longer than your trick, but works as well for 55x51 or 59x48. Still, nice video, thanks for sharing.
