www.homebuildi... Here's a link to our world famous website to learn more about house framing, construction repairs and building design. In this video we will learn how easy it is to calculate roof framing component angles with a simple framing square. All you need is a roof ration like 4:12 and a framing square, oh yeah and don't forget the video. A little information can go a long way.

Very good video. I've watched several videos on how to build rafters for a shed. All the other videos make it sound so difficult. Your video is simple and you don't have to do all that math. Thanks for showing the best and easiest way to do it. Good job.

To better position the square for some layouts, one can use different versions of the same ratio. For example a 4 in 12 pitch is a 3 to 1 ratio. So you can use 1 in 3, 2 in 6, 4 in 12, or 5 in 15. And so on. Although it's probably as popular as leaning how to use a Slide Rule, but for those following your vids might be interested in a video of the how to use all the scales, tick marks and notes stamped on those traditional framing squares even though it's pretty much regarded as archaic these days of pocket calculators just like the ol' slide rule.

Give me the old framing square. I don't like the framing calculators, as they produce framers who don't really understand how to frame without them. I'm not sure what they would do if their calculator broke.

Thank you for sharing this video. I have to build trusses. I have problems following the lingo and instructions in most of these videos. I will just do the best I can and try to use common sense.

Dear Greg, I am hoping to build 2 tiny houses on my daughter's land this summer. To meet the energy code demand of R40 in the attic, we may use 14 inch i Joists. The maker of the joists says no birdsmouth at the top end of the 2:12 flat roof, only at the bottom end of the joist. They recommend installing a bevelled support on top of the double header. This strikes me as a weak link. Is this a common practice? Am I worrying about nothing with the addition of a bevelled 2x6 on the top of the wall frame? Thank you so much for all your great work!

@gregvancom Can you do a video on frieze board assembly for brick walls? We used to build them out of 2X4 blocks, but you don't see that type anymore. Do you know the type I'm talking about, 2X4 blocks that the frieze board is nailed to?

I would need an example or detail if you have one. Send me a link if you have one or more details.

@@gregvancom There doesn't seem to be anything about it online. Apparently, it's a method that's no longer used, but we built them like that in the 90s. I thought you might know the type I was referring to. I don't have any links or pictures.

How to frame standard of 12feets run of house
@davidbroussard8151

Our framer extended scab board from the rafters at a steeper slope than the main slope to shorten the distance of the facia board from the exterior wall. So we have a roof than angles down from the exterior wall to the facia. This looks like a covered up mistake. Please let me know your thoughts. I can send pictures if you are interested in looking at it further.

I've seen this done and think I have a video on changing the slope.

You keep saying fascia, maybe our lingo is different. Do you mean sheathing/roof deck? To me fascia is the decorative piece that you put on at the end to hide the framing.
@gregvancom
@gregvancom Год назад
No, fascia is the exterior board that you're referring to also.
@jonnyvliet

I think you both have the same definition. He was referring to those cutouts being for the "support for the fascia." You may be thinking about the fascia on the eve, but he's talking about the fascia on the rake. Those cutouts are for the supports (not shown) which will cantilever beyond the gable and to which you will attach the fascia.
