The calculation for Social Security spousal benefits seems really simple...until you introduce the multitude of "what if" variables. Thankfully, even then it can still be simple to understand.

My wife filed for Social Security when she turned 62, Nov 2021. I’m filing for Social Security at 65 and four months this December. Does my wife need to file again to start her spousal benefit, Or will it automatically get updated in the system since she filed before me.

Devin. I think your confusing people as to how the deduction is applied. It is applied to when you start the spousal benefit, Not when you started to take your Social Security. For instance. If your spouse takes social security at age 62 but applies for spousal at FRA there is no deduction.

I have questions regarding spousal benefits after divorce.I was married 33 years worked asan RN, became disabled during divorce and my SSDI is 1344$.My ex still works as an RN and makes great money. He is 65 and not claiming for benefits.I assume he will work until 72 years of age. I am not remarried and dans curious how do I get his benefit and approximately how much it would be? I believe he will receive maximum SS benefits.Thank you

The time the husband files for retirement, is the amount taken into consideration not the actual amount he receives years later, therefore the wife who files for the spousal benefits at 66 and six months receives a lot less money like $63.00 compared to 247 dollars. It is a loophole no one is aware.

So confusing! I have been getting Social Security Disability pay since I was about 58. I am now 64ish. As I understand I will lose the SSDI when I'm 66 and 10 months. I think. Confused about that too! Anyway my wife filed for her regular SS a little over a year ago at 62. She's only getting about $550 a month. I'm getting about $2k a month. Will I get my regular SS at around 67? And if so will her benefit amount increase?

I am 62 yrs old. I took early retirement(SS) at this year(April). I am receiving $1726.00 monthly. Also got married in March of this year too. My wife(61 yrs old) is receiving SSI for the past 6 yrs of $(SSI)794+$160(state-CA) of total $954.00. My question is can she use her SSI until she turn 66 yrs old, then turn around use my SS? I do receive my pension, if you needed to know. I we have phone interviews this 29 of December with SS. Hope you get this in time to answer me back. So I know on options.

Is the spousal benefit, in a case where the higher earner files at age 70, based on one half of the age 70 benefit or one half the FRA benefit?
@loriwhinery3210
@loriwhinery3210 2 года назад
That last part was confusing. I started drawing at 62 a little over 700.00, my husband doesn’t want to draw until his full retirement at 66 1/2 so my payment would drop to 70% of what I get so down to about 490.00 but then I’ll get 70% of my husbands when he files?

No the benefit starts when you take the spousal benefit, not when you take social security. So if you wait until you are at FRA to begin taking spousal benefits there is No reduction.

I never hear experts explain situations like ours. I’m the higher wage earner and am just turning 62 next month. My wife is at her full retirement age of 66 & 2 months. She filed at 62 and I have not filed. My full retirement amount is 2500 and her FRA in early 2017 was 929. She receives less for taking at age 62. I’m not clear on fighting her spousal benefit and are we leaving money on the table by me not claiming early since she is at her full retirement age?
@HoleTesla
@HoleTesla 2 года назад
From what Devon says, her spousal benefit would be (2500/2-929)=321. If you file at FRA, that amount should be added to her current check (which should be 929*.7=640 since she filed at age 62). From what Devin has said (and hopefully he will correct this if I'm wrong), if you filed at 62, she would immediately get that full spousal amount of 321 (since she is already at FRA), but your benefit would be decreased to (2500*0.7=) 1750.
@robertvittetoe6158
@robertvittetoe6158 2 года назад
@@HoleTesla appreciate it! That’s about what I was figuring. My figure is a little less because I added the annual cost of living allowances since 2017 to the 929. What I can’t answer is it better for me to claim early or wait.

Hi Devin: In the example you showed, the spouse own benefits is lower than the 50 % of her Husband. So, How does SSA calculate when the Wife own earnings benefits exceed the 50% of her husband? Another question: If a husband at FRA file for benefits ,does automatically the spouse has to file for benefits? Can his wife start receiving spouse benefits. And switch to her own earning at FRA? As usual, your response are always wise. Regards NQ

Sorry if I'm more confused...but maybe I'm not. The wife filed at 62. We have a 11 year age difference. If I file in the next year from your explanation I gather that her spousal benefit may well be zero. We dont seem to be able to get answers from SS about this. Am I wrong? Knowing this will affect my decision of when I file or if I just simply need to keep working until I expire.

@Devin CaroII° Thank You for the response. I'm sorry but the answer I'm trying to get to is will she qualify for an increase in her benefit from the $550 that she now gets to about half of what I will get when I file or will she get zero spousal benefit? If it is zero I will need to keep working until I cant. Thanks Again.
@edsiler3260
@edsiler3260 2 года назад
Her possible additional spousal benefit is 50% of your FRA benefit (regardless when you file) minus her FRA benefit. Reduce that amount based on her age at the time you file. That's the ADDITIONAL amount she'd receive. Study the video from 8:40 on, covers that exact thing. Her $550 benefit is based on her age of 62 when she filed, but her spousal portion will be based on her age when you file & she becomes entitled to that portion.
@mer58lin
@mer58lin 2 года назад
@@edsiler3260 Thank You, my question of the information came from a part of the video which showed that there was a condition that could exist where my spouse could actually end up with zero if I didnt choose the "right" time to file. I just want to avoid that mistake. This could easily be cleared up if the SSA would get over the idea that they have no obligation to assist people in doing what's best for themselves with information they provide. It does seem that if the right question isnt asked the information wont be there to use. Thanks Again.

@bigtenbrutus
@bigtenbrutus 2 года назад
It depends on your spouse's age when you file. She cannot put off waiting for her FRA since she is already collecting her benefit. She will be automatically enrolled to receive spousal benefit when you file for benefits. She will not be able to receive more than the lessor of $1500 or 50% of your benefit. If she will be 63 (1 year from now) she will receive half of yours x .70 (reduction for her being 63 when you file) plus her current amount. 1325 x .70 + 700, or $962 +$700 which is $1625. So, since $1500 is maximum, but half of yours is $1325, she'll get the lessor, which is $1325.
