This also works if the root doesn't work out to be an integer. You just continue until the counter register runs out of digits. It does _not_ work with a 10-key calculator like the Facit machines, because you can't change single digits of a value in the input register.

Thank you for this. It is the first really understandable demonstration of working out toots on a mechanical calculator I have seen. I have a small collection of them so it is something I have wanted to learn to do.

Fifty years ago my father taught me how to extract square roots by long division, in essentially the same way you demonstrate with the calculator. I used to have a "Magic Brain" type of pocket calculator, and I still have my old slide rule, but in school we used tables of logarithms, square roots, sines, etc.

Grazie. L'argomento di certo è un po' pesante, bisogna alleggerirlo un po'. Ma è una cosa interessante che si può fare con tante calcolatrici meccaniche, e non è così difficile.
