We show you how to determine how many Btuh are in the water with this simple calculation Q = GPM x 500 x Delta-T.
This can be applied to any water coil or the calculation for the tonnage of a chiller.

BTUH = (Gallon / Min) x ( 60 Min / Hour) x [ (1.0 BTU / LB - deg F) Specific Heat Cp of Water x (8.34 LB / Gallon) Density of Water] x (Delta T deg F) in Unit Analysis this would be equal to BTU/Hr = (Gallon / Min) x (60 Min / Hour) x (8.34 BTU / Gallon - deg F) x (deg F)

How he got the 500 is the weight of water (8.33) x multiplied by the specific heat of water (1.0) x (60 minutes)= 499.80 rounded to 500.

Correct. 8.34 Lbs/Gal x 1 (Specific Heat) x 60 Min/Hr = 500

Where did the constant 500 came from?
@MEPAcademy
@MEPAcademy 2 года назад
The 500 is a constant that represents the Fluid Factor, which includes the weight of the water (8.33 lbs/Gal.) x the Specific Heat of Water (1.0) multiplied by 60 minutes per hour. 8.33 x 1 x 60 = 500

Could you explain what the 500 in the equation mean? And how it’s derived?
@MEPAcademy
@MEPAcademy 2 года назад
Because BTUs are measured per hour, the 500 comes from one gallon of water that weighs 8.33 pounds, times 60 minutes in one hour. (8.33 pounds X 60 minutes = 500

A flow meter would be helpful. There are many different kinds of meters that could be used that are available on the market.
