best tips for growing cypripedium. have been growing them for 20 years all of them died because of too much water in autumn and winter in the garden. thank you
We have three native Cypripedium species growing in our western Canadian garden. They need zero care. C calceolus grows by the millions in our Rocky Mountain valleys. The only more numerous orchid is the aesthetically pleasing Calypso orchid. They are also easy to grow in moss under trees in the garden . Cypripediums and Calypsos are are in bloom now ( mid June). Minus 35c winters have no impact.
Hi thanks for ur video i bought a slipper orchid.. Wanted a outdoor orchid turned out i bought a paphiopedilum not a cypripedium so i had to get one too still waiting on both to arrive in the post lol... Looking at videos to find the right conditions for both these different orchid.. Glad i found ur video...... Definitely both the most expensive orchids i have bought... One is coming from orchid garden in Poland.. Couldnt find any in uk.. At decent price. Please use hedgehog friendly slug repellent
Great video, Dino. I wonder if I could grow them in NE Iowa? (Zone4) Lots of snow in the winter. What is the planting medium you use? *Beams a big smile and laughs* Of course, I should have watched this all the way through, THEN asked my questions. Your directions are very thorough. Thank you!
Hi Dino, I like cypripediums and I liked your video. But for me cypripediums (got 12 different) are no care orchids, except for fertilizing. They are planted in my garden under trees, they get a good amount of light and even direct sunshine. No watering except when it's too hot and dry. I pull out weeds from time to time and I admire them when they bloom... I live in the french Alps, and I can also admire Cyp. calceolus in the wild, I know different secret places where they grow, the nearest place is only 6 km away from my home.
Bruno, I absolutely agree they can be very easy to grow if their basic needs are met. But a lot of people find them very difficult (it's often not fertilizing enough, or letting them get too dry, or giving them compost/manure).. I used to find them difficult too until I figured out how to grow them properly. Which species do you grow in your garden?
Very good tips! I always like them but didn't know how to care for them! I am tempted to get some for outdoor growing but they are a bit pricey. Where do you buy yours?
Thank you, I hope the video has helped you :) Are you based in the United Kingdom? You can try Laneside Alpines, which sell Cypripedium and other hardy orchids. I imported a lot of mine for wholesale and kept some for myself. I'll probably get another order in this autumn if you're interested.
Hey, my cypripediums are starting to bloom. After they finish I want to repot them. What would you repot them in? What media would you use? Clear or black pots? Any other things I should do?
We moved in 2 years ago and the garden was a big mess, so there is still a huge amount of work to do. I am hoping in about a year things will be far tidier and organised :)
Just when you think you're getting close something else pops up. There's a nursery on Salt Spring Island that sells those orchids so I'm off to see some in a couple of weeks. Glad for the culture info...
Your watering can looks very scary! The American or Asian water cans are usually green or blue. I always have bad dreams about you using gas can to pour gas into the cypripedium.
