My young gollum jade died a while ago. Even though I had it in proper soil mix, ceramic pot and didn't overwater it, it still did succumb to root rot, which consumed the water-carrying core of the plant; this caused the entire plant to stop retaining water, which probably exasperated the over-watering issue as I couldn't quite understand why leaves remained soft and wrinkly despite taking care of it. After a while it stopped growing and all the leaves began to drop, you could see the brown rot coming out at the tips where the leaves connected. Luckily, I saved the healthy leaves, re-potted them and now I have a bunch of healthy, young gollum jade plantlets growing. Lessons have been learned!

I've got over 200 rare Hoyas. Mealies are a given so I carry 90% Isopropyl & spray them when I see them. I rarely have issues, but they do pop up when I do a repotting. They come in some coconut husk & some certain brand soils.

Funny thing about putting the plants outside in the summer-I live in the desert southwest of the US, and I can tell you that jade plants must be brought inside during the heat of summer! Portulacaria afra (elephant bush) is the only variety I know that can take the heat. I’ll have to find out about the Gollum variety. I usually wait until the temps start to hit 40º regularly, then the plants come inside until about November when they go back outside where they thrive until next year’s heat rolls around. When I first moved here from LA, I brought a huge jade plant that I proudly displayed on my front porch. It made it until about August, then I noticed it drooping a bit, then it happened very fast-within a week it seemed to actually melt, the entire plant seemed to lose its coherence and turned into a pile of brown mush. I cried-I’d had that plant for nearly 20 years, and it was too big to move inside-even cutting I took from the dying plant didn’t take. Now I keep them small, so that I can bring them inside.

I so appreciate this video and it's kind of crazy how well timed it was for me to find it. I have a gollum jade that has moved around with me for about 5 years but never had ideal conditions. Grew to about 8 inches tall and was starting to get the "tree" look. Then I gave it root rot... So I just decided to propagate and save it and this video is going to help me soooo much.

I'm with you on jade plants, I love them all! Yours are just awesome! 😍 My gollum is a pretty slow grower even though it's right in a west-facing window. That said, the window is frosted so I expect that cuts the light quite a bit. I'll try moving my jades outside for the summer. I have a spot on my east-facing terrace where they would get direct sun until about 13:00 and then part shade for the rest of the day. Might give me a growth spurt 🤞

Nice plant…I have a small one ….actually there are two stems in my pot. It’s in S facing window and it looks healthy but it’s very slow growing; I’ve had it for a few years. The smaller of the two stems is leaning towards one side probably because of spacing so I’m wondering if I should try and separate them. 🤔They were together when I got the plant and I potted them up together over a year ago. I hate to mess it up but I may take a look at the way the roots are situated and then decide. I saw one at a nursery once that was a 3 foot shrub….it was huge!
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
Most times the stems lean because of the weight of the leaves in proportion to the thin stems. Over time, and with pruning, the stem will strengthen. I guess it depends on what you want the end goal of the plant...tree form or multiple stems in one pot. If you want the tree form then it will probably be easier now to separate it and let it heal and grow.

Hey Mandi! I will definitely check out your collection today. This plant has only ever been indoors as well. I think I may take it outside in the summer and let it flourish. It honestly seemed like it did nothing for the first two years then exploded. If they soil is dry and has been dry for awhile, then I would say they are dehydrated. I try and avoid them getting wrinkled like that by testing the leaves like in the video. Don't forget to fertilize if you don't already.

Hello Juliette! I have never had an entire branch fall off. I can see that happening if that branch was too heavy....I don't know how larger this plant is, but that can definitely happen. If the main plant doesn't look well then it may have gotten some root rot perhaps and dropped a branch...???

@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
You can definitely propagate them. Are you wanting to place them in the same pot or a separate pot? Basically you let the end callus over for a day. Stick it right back in soil.... I don't water for about the first week to 10 days. The plant will use nutrients and water from the thick leaves to produce roots. If you water right after planting, there are no roots to soak up the moisture and there will be a chance of rotting the stem. So that's why I like to keep the soil dry for about that 10 days. After that just lightly pull up on the stem and if there's resistance then it means there's roots. I will lightly water around the stem so those roots can soak up the water. I don't soak all of the soil because it'll just stay too wet. Let it dry out again and then water lightly. You may notice some wrinkly leaves and may even drop some, but that is completely normal and it will soon grow enough roots to soak up more moisture and getting those thick leaves again
@huntresskira

I would wait a couple days and lightly water near the stem to encourage root growth. You don't need to soak all of the soil because there are no roots to utilize the water, so light waterings only otherwise rot on the stem will happen again. Keep me posted!

Is it possible for a jade plant to have both spade and gollum shapes? I just took a cutting from a big bush which I thought (visually) was a regular spade shaped jade plant and found out the cuttings itself was gollum shaped!

I have a Gollum Jade the same size as your big one. Its in a vert large pot. I bought it like that. I was told it was recently transfered to this very big pot. I mean its huge. Would you suggest putting it in a smaller pot like yours?? What is that 7-8 inches? Thank you

I use a butter knife to loosen up the soil around the edges and try to pry it out that way. Congrats on your new plant!

I have the gollum Jade plant I bought it at the farmers market for 2.50 and well I forgot to water it for a long time (out of sight, out of mind) and it had mealy bugs, Ugh! I’m in the process of saving it and I moved it to where I can see it daily. So far so good I didn’t lose a leaf. I have a variegated Jade Plant do you have one or have you saw it? Can you do a video on it? Mine is green, white and pink variegation.

I used to have a variegated one, but sold it because I had too many jades at the time. Lol Is there anything specific you'd like to see in a video? I do have many other jade videos on my channel as well!

Can you tell me why my Gollum Jade, as it got older, turned into a regular jade looking plant?
@bournvillelover
@bournvillelover 2 года назад
Great video thanks! My gollum jade's only small at the moment, but I hope it'll turn into a tree like yours! You said you can take them outside in summer - Is it okay to take them outside on sunny days and then bring them back inside every evening during summer? I did that last year and it didn't die, but I think I read somewhere it can shock the plants if you move them indoors and outdoors a lot? UK summers (at least where I live) aren't warm enough to keep succulents outdoors all summer and I really don't want to kill my gollum jade this year!😅
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
That seems like a lot of work lol. Maybe try it for one season outside starting with a shady spot and moving it to a brighter spot. See if it responds to the summer heat and sun. If not then keep it indoors...I've only taken mine outside one summer (one plant) otherwise they do great indoors for me. Just give it time and it will get larger. Good luck!

Jades can handle colder weather. I think they prefer it. I live in central Florida and we get into the low 40s and upper 30s at night sometimes in late winter. The do fine. I would bring them in if it got down to freezing 32°. It almost never does so mine stay outside all year.

Okay, I just have to come back here and say that I did everything you said in this video (transplanted it into a terra cotta pot, gave it a thorough soaking… I had been afraid of overwatering it so had been giving it sips of water here and there… turns out I wasn’t giving it enough water, and put it in a south facing window… I had it in a north facing window previously) and a week later the leaves are all bright green and plump! Thank you so much for all the info in this video!!!

Hello! Last night when I came home, I noticed that the stem of my jade was drooping and the leaves were falling off. I checked the soil and it was about 90% dry. I'm not sure why this is happening, so I just watered it.😢

Help! I've had my Gollum Jade tree for over twenty years now. The leaves are starting to fall off and a lot of them are shriveling up. My routine is the same. When this started occurring, I felt it needed more sun, so it's now closer to my southern window to receive more sunlight. I am using regular soil and I do fertilize it a few times a year. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I love this plant and I'm hoping to bring it back to life. Thanks.

Lots of helpful advise, thanks so much. Two questions, first I bought a little gollum at Home Depot and it has what looks like 3 plants In the pot, should I separate them? Second, last summer I put my regular jade outside and it did great. I even left it out in any rain. Total novice, is that okay? Or did I dodge a bullet? Thanks.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
If you want like the individual tree forms then you can seperate them or keep them all together and get a bushy one. Both are super cool. Don't forget you can keep the busy one and once it starts to grow you can always take cuttings and start a single stem one down the road. Totally okay to leave them in the rain, but if it's a lot of lime a few days then I've just placed mine in the shed so it doesn't drown them. Rain water is best though!

Are you referring to the woody stem? Yes, as they grow and age they become like a tree. Some pruning along the way may be required to clean it up a bit. But make sure to give it all the proper care and all you have to do is wait haha

I’m so confused. I’m a new plant parent and have been hearing or reading that jade plants are summer dormant. I got mine last spring and they are outside in full sun until yesterday when I moved them to east side with morning sun and afternoon shade. I live in Kansas. They were growing a lot but seemed to stop. Did I put them in dormancy?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
Hey Stella. I have never heard of Jades going dormant in the summer. How did your jade do in full sun? Did it burn the leaves at all? Jades like the sun, but even more they like the heat. I doubt you put them into dormancy....they will on;y grow a certain amount each year.
