My grandma had one of these that she grew for years and years. It was huge, much bigger then yours. And they had seperated it off into other pots off the mother plant and have been sold at our local plant stand. When she passed away my grandpa seperated her plant up and gave some to anyone in the family that wanted it. I'm the only one that still has theirs alive. Aside from my grandpa and the mother plant. Which is crazy because I don't have a green thumb. It's one of the only plants I have managed to not kill. Ive had it outside and it seems to enjoy our weather out here in Washington. I've had it outside for almost 2 years now. I've had it for about 6 years total. I actually plan on separating some of mine off and actually bringing some to her grave site and leaving a pot of it for her since it was one of her favorites, now that I know it does so well outside.

That’s absolutely amazing and a lovely story! I’d put a corn or two under the ground at her grave, that way it’d stay there forever but not sure on laws where you are. Absolutely love that her plant has brought so many people so much joy! 💕

omg I love this story ❤ I love the sentiment of having a family members plant, or part of it, a propagation...and growing your own plant from it. it's this sense of the energy and love your loved one put into growing the plant before gifting it to you, and then you carry that on. ❤ my family also has done this

It looks like a dozen bulbs in a 10" pot? I'm in Arizona and will have it in an east window that gets full sun in the morning through 11am. In Arizona Oxalis and Creeping Wood sorrel are considered invasive in an outdoor garden. They send runners close to the soil and they are very hard to control. I've also been told that the seeds "burst" if you don't catch them in time, making control of these quite difficult. BUT, oxalis indoors is a splendid display.

I have been growing these successfully for a few years now, regularly dividing and giving away. I always grow them outdoors and overwinter them in a cold greenhouse. In recent weeks two massive ones have succumbed to a fungus and completely collapsed and I think there is no alternative than to bin them and start again. I guess they are probably not so susceptible to this when grown in doors.

I absolutely love the size of your Oxalis and I would very much like to get mine to the same stage also, the trouble with mine is the stems - I have about 15 stems (along with purple petals) in a pot and the stems just look lifeless, they don't stand upright like yours, what is the trick to get them to stand up?
@FlorenceOzkan
@FlorenceOzkan 4 года назад
As the summer draws to a close the stems do tend to droop as they're getting ready to go into dormancy. The more light the better, rotate the pot every time you water and maybe open the window or get a fan on them to strengthen them up a bit. Mine did not look like this last year, but allowing it to go dormant I think is the trick to get them to beef out next year.
@peterbrehmj

Hey @Florence Ozkan , thanks for making this great video. I love this plant personally. One note- at 7:15 the oxalis triangularis is not edible. It is toxic for house pets like dogs and cats. Please do not eat it and be please careful when making edible recommendations. Otherwise great job!

@bennetht
@bennetht 2 года назад
Did you say that you cut all.of yours back? So there's nothing? And you leave it till it wakes up in spring? If I've been under watering should I sort the watering before cutting back? I'm in Scotland and had my small plant at a north facing window which I realise isn't the best place for it now. There's maybe about 15 stems and leggy
@FlorenceOzkan
@FlorenceOzkan 2 года назад
I do! I’d pull back on watering now and let it go dormant, next spring it’ll come alive and hopefully bigger! If your plant only has 15 stems then I’d leave them until they’re dry and crispy until you cut it back so that way all the energy can go back into the corns. Hope that helps!

I bought mine as bulbs 4 weeks agoand for 2 weeks nothing happened.Then hey presto I moved then to my bedroom on a shelf above a radiator,they have shot up and point towards my double doors of my conservetory. My question is will they not go dormant if I keep them in this position during the winter? I have noticed now that once they get about 6 inches tall they then lean over and a new shoot appears at the base of each of the leaning stem. I am totally won over by them. Thank so mudh for introducing me to them.

Great informative video thank you, and such a beautiful large plant! I just got a plant from my mom, it is a Schefflera tree and it has these purple oxalis growing inside the pot as well. I repotted into a larger pot and found a lot of these bulbs stuck tightly in its root system. IS it ok to keep them together in the pot? Or will they multiply quickly and take over all the space in the new pot and leave no space for the roots of the tree to grow? The tree repotting has been long overdue. I am worried I wont be able to actually take out these bulbs due to them being so prominent and stuck within the tight tree ball. I really appreciate any help as I have been looking around for an answer but have been unable to find it.

The oxalis roots are super thin and hair like, the corns obviously multiply and therefore take up space but I really wouldn’t worry! There are lots of plants that can be used as under planters. Check out ‘Legends of Monstera, Collector-Seller Series’ here on RU-vid, if I remember correctly they have some beautiful examples of underplanting in pots! My mum also underplants using oxalis, tradescantia, sedum and other smaller plants in larger plants soil, so I honestly think it’s fine! The only thing I would say if you’re wanting to get rid of the oxalis from your schefflera pot is to unpot, remove as much soil as possible- you can be fairly rough with the roots- and get them out that way!

Oh great! To be honest I’ve never had any pest problems but I think it you were to spray and it deteriorated, you can always chop down all the foliage and wait for new growth!

Hi, amazing. I've just bought this plant it's now in a 6inch plastic pot. Do I keep in this and when do I need to repot into bigger one. Thanks for any advice as I'm just getting started with my house plant collection. 😊
@FlorenceOzkan
@FlorenceOzkan 4 года назад
I’d keep it in the same pot as it’s in now- the shock of repotting tends to send them into dormancy. If you don’t like the pot it’s currently in try a cover pot and at the beginning of spring next year when it’s due to come out of dormancy, repot then. Hope that helps!

I've had my Oxalis for about 4 years, wishes I had found your video previously... o took some advice from a UK Gardening F/B page (after asking advice) and someone said you can't overwater an Oxalis.... currently mine is entering it's dormant period, I think I've overwatered her... she is looking really poor, I have her on my kitchen window, and have loads of leaf burn and bulb rot, I'm hoping with your advice I can revive my beautiful Oxalis. I have just bought some new varieties (2) from Farmer Gracy (excellent bulb co.) can you mix the bulbs at all to get different colours in one pot? Or does each species prefer its own company ❤

Thanks for this helpful video. I have masses of Oxalis triangular is, which I let go dormant this year for the first time. Now I am repotting and refreshing the soil. Can you tell me what you think is the BEST DEPTH to have the bulbs? I Feel they do better planted reasonably deep (about 6” or more) but I would like to make a spectacular display in containers like Victorian serving bowls, which are not as deep as flower pots, and would mean they are not in removable plastic pos, but straight into the China. What do you think? Thanks - my name is Sarah!
@FlorenceOzkan
@FlorenceOzkan 3 года назад
You're welcome! I normally plant them around 3-6 inches deep. Just make sure that if you water heavily the bulbs won't rise out of the soil! You could always try the china serving bowls with a corn or two and that way if it works you can repot more into them next year!

Guessing you are no longer active on here but will try anyway. I have had my oxalis 3 years and it seems happy. Dies back each year and comes again but never really gets any bigger. I feed occasionally. I want a big healthy plant like yours. The only thing I think it may be is that my house it quite a cold house and it is in a nw facing window. Could that be the reason ?
@FlorenceOzkan

I think it’s probably not performing it’s best because it sounds like it needs brighter light, more warmth and feed

Hey, there! I was searching the internet tonight for information to help me understand why my oxalis grows with long and lanky, winding stems. It is indoors and most of our office plants seem to love the light in the office which we leave on 24/7. She's called "charmed wine" Oxalis and looks exactly like yours. I've had her for a year and unfortunately she didn't fair too well when I tried to divide her in two when I first purchased her. She's had some good and bad days, but overall, I think she's simply struggled. I've not seen her put out a pretty flower in almost a year now... despite adding the fertilizer sticks. Last week, I decided to cut her back to just three of her strongest stems/leaves and she's already put out about 10 stems/leaves, but again... no flowers to be seen. Any advise is appreciated! Thank you! j'lynn

The later in the growing season the longer they will get. I’d try to give it direct natural sun rather than grow lights and maybe try to put a fan in the room (close by) to strengthen the stems

Thank you for this very helpful video-I understood that this plant is toxic to pets though it is edible. Is my understanding correct? Do you know if it is toxic to wildlife?
@FlorenceOzkan
@FlorenceOzkan 4 года назад
You’re welcome! So in large quantities it is toxic to cats, dogs and horses because of its soluble calcium oxalates. From what I’ve read the bitter taste will put animals off and therefore if they munch on one leaf they should be fine but if they eat the whole plant in one sitting then you’ve got something to worry about. These are safe to ingest in small quantities for humans (hence using them as garnish for salads) but again if eaten in huge quantities you might struggle with symptoms.

thank you for this info. I acquired a plant that looks like this from my Mom this week. It was outside so I think it got too cold. The leaves are mostly green with a little purplish on the back side of the leaves. They have the same small lavender flowers. Can you tell me why they are green and not purple? The plant does not look healthy so I am hoping that once I follow your input for lighting and watering it will become more healthy. thanks
@FlorenceOzkan
@FlorenceOzkan 3 года назад
You’re welcome! It’ll be a great addition to your home. So in answer to your question, there are many different types of oxalis so you have two options: 1: your oxalis is a more green variety with purple undersides to the leaves 2: from the move and cold weather it has gone into shock and might be going into dormancy, in which case a lot of the nutrients are being pulled from the leaves and back to the corns. This causes a green/yellow colouration on the leaves and I believe this could be the case. If it goes dormant, leave it for a month or so before trying to wake it up and just make sure to fertilise in the growing period. Best of luck and let me know how it goes!

I was unaware that this type of plant dad's off in the winter I think I bought mine around January and it's now April. I have lost about half of the plant because of the stems drying up and me having to pluck them away. at first I had to realize that too much sun for this plant will damage the delicate leaves so some of the die-off may have been due to that. I'm just not sure what to do at this point to get it to thrive I think I'm going to have to try some fertilizer water like you did otherwise if it doesn't do well I may have to go in and find the bulbs and start over if anyone has any tips I would greatly appreciate it. one thing I have noticed as well is that it does better with less watering if I overwatered it all the leaves would droop down but when I let it dry out and not water it as much the leaves per cup it also seems to do better in a shady place in my home
