I agree, best and safest way to carry, except for very short distances, is camera in one hand and tripod in the other. One precaution on the center leg down option. If carrying over uneven ground (or rocky or shrub covered ground) it is possible to catch the lower leg either on the ground or an obstacle, which might damage the leg or cause you to lose your balance and fall. Also, a precautionary tale, if you are going to carry a Gitzo over your shoulder, make absolute certain that the bolts holding the compression disk at the top of the tripod are TIGHT! Several years ago a friend was carrying his camera in that manner and the disk came loose, allowing camera, 600mm f4 lens and head to crash to the ground, with horrifying consequences! Since he had never removed or loosened the disk he contacted Gitzo and was told that these tripods are not intended to be carried in that manner, which of course surprised him because everbody does it!

I know you have been shooting forever but swinging that lens around by the camera freaks me out. Also, how can such an incredible nature and sport photographer only have 800 subscribers? Love that you are still working hard at your craft. Thanks.

Oh man, it hurts to see you swinging that lens on the body alone.

No worries. As long as it is pointing down there is no stress on the mounts.

Hi Artie, thank you for the wealth of knowledge that you provide. I was curious what tripod you would recommend for long lenses such as the 400/2.8 & 600/4. I'm torn between a series RRS series 2 tripod (32mm top tube diameter) and series 3 tripod (36mm top tube diameter). I am the type of photographer that will be hiking many miles and I do value the lightest gear when possible. Would the RRS Series 2 suffice? Thank you!

Sorry to be tardy on this :( Have you purchased yet? The RRS tripods are over-priced junk. . Where do you live? What do you like to photograph? Best to respond via e-mail to samandmayasgrandpa@att.net. with love, artie
