A very nice beginner's guide. There's only one thing I'd share to give a more updated way to transfer the image. The easiest way is to print the image from a laser printer. Place the image face down. Then take laqure thinner on a white tee shirt material and barely get the paper wet. Take a spoon and rub the image into the wood as few seconds. Let it dry and take the paper away. The image will be transferred to the wood and no glue on the wood to deal with
It wad a lot of fun. And easier than it looks. I mostly used a shallow gouge an a v tool. So if someone wanted to do it with hand carving tools it wouldn't be hard to grab a couple vintage ones off eBay for a few dollars. Feel free to make your own video if your audience would enjoy it.
What a great project! I own & use many Arbortech tools but I opted out on this one because of the size. Instead I use the Proxxon & Wecheer power carvers, because they fit in the hand nicely with good control. Also the blades from theses are compatible with one another and with the flex cut hand chisel with replaceable tips. Together the host about 15 different blade types. With that said you did a great job presenting & using this tool! I really want to try this project! Thanks for sharing!
I love that we can search back through this channel's content and find golden nuggets of information like this one. I was not aware of the Arbortech Power Chisel. I have been asked to make a sign and planed on making a template in MDF and using guide bushings, but when I laid out the text and added the offset for the guide bushing I found that the template became compromised. The Rockler letter sets look interesting, but you are still limited to the available templates. So I have just ordered the smaller Wecheer power chisel set. BTW I have own an Arbortech ball gouge for several years, but I have never been completely comfortable using it. Not that I have spent a lot of time practicing. Your method of carving from photographs looks very interesting though, and I am definitely going to try it. Thank you James.
I use the Arbortech Power chisel for carving and love this tool. One tip that wasn't obvious in the instructions was to apply 1 or 2 drops of the supplied oil every 15 minutes of use. If you don't the end of the chisel that is impacted will mushroom and make it difficult, or impossible to remove. I found this out the hard way and had to disassemble the power carver to get the chisel out. I was able to fix the problem with some sandpaper. As a side note, the service center for Arbortech USA was extremely helpful and explained what caused the problem. I own most of the tools offered by Arbortech and can highly recommend them for carving everything from bowls to sculptures. Great video and review of the tool. you have a new sub. Keep it up.
I have been a fan of yours for years. I was with you in the older, more humorous show days. A lot of people complained about more talking than woodworking but I actually liked it. You ended up changing it up a bit and I find it sad that you don't have more views on videos like these. They are great! Keep it up, You have many fans.
Been carving portraits on wood for many years. I simply photo copy a line drawing and glue it to the wood using PVA glue. Leave to dry few hours then rout with a palm router using a V cutter with shallow cuts. Amazing results using my method.
Awesome video! Thanks for making it. I'm not a carver but I wanted to see the pattern preparation portion to do some scrollsaw projects. I just haven't been able to get the photo the way I want but I guess I'm going back to photoshop. 😁😁😁
Can recommend the chisels to buy to start out with? I assume that the two you get are not the ones used in these projects. $80 or so for 3 more chisels or $110 for 5 is not easy after the initial cost of the power tool. I believe the tool will be great for a disabled person like me. Hands can't handle the work of hammer and chisel. Thanks. Inspiring video.
