Great work on the sign and video. I liked how you described what you were doing. size of board used and font size would've been nice as your video made me want to make a sign for a gift. finding the right board/font sign combo was a tough choice haha. appreciate that you did say what type of font you used. thanks to you I made my 1st sign and it turned out great as the family loved it. thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Wow! You are super duper awesome at wood carving. You have a very steady hand. CNC router is nothing in front of your palm routing job. I really liked your videos Do you mind posting the router bits used in this video?
Great video. It really has stirred up alot of interest. Would you post the equipment (router, bits, etc,) that you used? Thanks & God Bless! Once again, Great work!
@@stevescustomcarving1175 thank you that's very good. I do have a small router and a couple of bits so when I get the chance I do want to do something of that nature and If I come across any problems that I think you might be able to help with then If it is ok I'll ask for advice many thanks and I'll share a picture or two
I'll keep my eyes peeled for the sign if I am ever out that way. I used to go fishing alot out near Standish at the narrows bridge for bullhead and small mouth bass.
Enjoyed it very much, beautiful sign! Maybe some closer up shots so we can see when your describing how you carve, how its done. Other than that great job
Thanks. Which bits would you recommned to do projects like mashrabiya moroccan screens? They are lovely but do require the removal of all the material and should be able to cut straight angles, not just rounded shapes. I'll appreciate your suggestions.
Amazing how videos you see about sign carving and you see Eric Rhoten's base plate, base plate modification, same equipment used IE Critter sprayer and procedure for making the sign. Tips and tricks. Yet no credit given.
Hi Keya, I started with a 60 Deg, 90 Deg V bits. I also started with a 'profile' bit, Whiteside SC55. You can use a round over or 45Deg bit for the edging. I still use these bits for most of my signs. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
SUPERB. Subbed. Question: Could I use my existing 1/8" shank Dremel bits, with a 1/4-1/8" adapter, to use with my DeWalt DWP 611 palm router? Thanks, in advance.
I have used 1/8" bits in my DWP611. I do not believe they were made for a Dremel. Be careful. You DO NOT want the bit to come out or break while using. That could be dangerous. Good Luck!
Hi, love the video. I'm looking for a belt sander for the first time. What are you using and what are the specs? My 5" orbital, even with 80 grit to remove black, isn't cutting it. Thanks, Greg in Nashville.
@@stevescustomcarving1175 Thank you for the feedback. I opted for a Dewalt disk sander. Holy cow. Used it the first time today and it melted that paint right off :)
1st, great video. At 10:00... can you tell me what you are using at your nonskid mat under the work while sanding? What did you use for your final spray sealer? Nice video
what kind of router bit did you use? I also have a DEWALT palm router with a small 4mm diameter router bit. But the result was not as nice. The font was also too difficult.
I do my design with PowerPoint. Then I print it and use carbon paper to transfer the image. I have begun to play with printing a reversed image on wax paper but it requires a lot more setup to work properly. Much faster though.
Here is the one I use. www.amazon.com/Whiteside-Engraving-CNC-Router-Point/dp/B01LG5XYIW/ref=sr_1_26?dchild=1&keywords=whiteside+router+bits+sign+carving&qid=1629503213&s=hi&sr=1-26
I use 3 different bits on this sign. White side Whiteside Engraving CNC Router Bit, 5/8" Point, 1/4" SH for the artwork and letters Whiteside Router Bits 1500 V-Groove Bit with 90-Degree 1/4-Inch Cutting Diameter and 1/8-Inch Point Length for the cloud around the letters Whiteside Router Bits 1540 V-Groove 60-Degree 1/4-Inch Cutting Diameter and 7/32-Inch Point Length for the inset letters.
Do you make these for people or are you just showing us how to make them please comment back I would love to have a sign like this really 2 sides so please comment back thank you very much for this video
Hi Rey, I started with a 60 Deg for the location letters, 90 Deg V bit for the cloud and cleanout. I also used a 'profile' bit, Whiteside SC55 for the outset letters. You can use a round over or 45Deg bit for the edging. I still use these bits for most of my signs. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
I do my layout in PowerPoint. I then reverse everything and print onto freezer paper. This allows me to transfer the design onto the piece. From there, I free hand the carving.
NOTICE PLEASE: Here is a tip if you are just starting out like I am. All these guys make it look so easy, make it look like it is fingertip touch. Truth is HANG ON TO THAT SUCKER FOR DEAR LIFE!!! Or it will fly out of your hands! They do not look like it, but all these guys have a VERY firm grip on the router TRUST me. =) ALSO: When starting the router on the board, it is important to lay it into the wood at an angle, watch him closely. Nobody seems to tell you this and if you try to punch it straight down on the wood it will fly out of your hand also.
That is a good suggestion. I will need to start doing that. Here is a link to the profile bit with a picture. makeawoodsign.com/products/profile-router-bit
