A 'frieze' is a horizontal band of decoration. It's usually thought to be more elaborate than we have here, more architectural, but this is definitely a frieze.
You can make our frieze as long as you like!
Carvers try to be efficient when doing repeat work like this, using the same tool for as long as possible. That's a good rule to follow in any carving.
