This is a bit more advanced for creators who have got a good grasp on the sand casting process. I run you through how I cast in place faceted sapphires in a flush set style.
Apologies for the video not picking up all the small details. I will be trying a new angle for the next video so you can see how the stones are laid out inside the flask.

I just started casting 3D signet dragon scale rings in sand. This is my next project. I learned how to create air holes from you. Thanks😊 Using lots of silver (heavy) and vertical mold is the way to go. TIP: You can never use to much talc baking soda, and don't be afraid to repress your design to crisp it up.

Hi Kirralea, love your video, just cast a faceted ring after watching this well explained tutorial. Can you please tell me the make of your bolt cutters? Thanks Angela

Yay awesome to hear the video was helpful :) I have no idea what brand they are haha But make sure you get the ones with the extra articulated arms to make it easier to cut through thick sprues :)

Fabulous!!!! video I just got a sweet set of colored sapps. I will be setting in wax. I am really a sculptor so it will be very hands on no cad. Thank you for your hands on video. does the pawpaw ointment hold the stone? or protects the stones?
@sandcasting_with_kirralea
@sandcasting_with_kirralea 2 года назад
It is a gentle adhesive for the stones, I dont think it does anything to protect the stones haha

I’d be really interested to see how you use a graver to uncover the stones a little. I’ve done a few cast where the stones are just a little more covered up than I would like, but I’m not sure how to approach it. Thank you!

Really cool! I have been sand casting for a little bit now. 😂 and I have a lot of sapphire I’ve rock hounded where I live. Never thought of incorporating in this fashion. It’s neat. The raw look is really cool. Does the fruit ointment make anything that needs to be cleaned after? Does it just hold stones for you? Do the inclusions in the harder stones matter?

It just gently adheres the stone in position :)

Do you ever use corn starch for your separating powder? I use it and it works perfectly and is safer than talc

Could one just use petroleum jelly in a tube to place the stones as we don’t have the pawpaw lotion that you use here in the US States?
@sandcasting_with_kirralea

You can use Vaseline :)

@@sandcasting_with_kirralea or anything you have in the home. I'm using triple antibiotic ointment because i have it and the tube has a tiny applicator. It's almost all petroleum jelly.

Hey Kirra-Lea - Thanks so much for doing these videos. I am all inspired again. Can you remind me again what types of stones are suitable to cast in place please? Diamonds, Rubys and sapphires are all OK right? I think i remember you saying CZ's are OK as well? What about garnets?
@sandcasting_with_kirralea
@sandcasting_with_kirralea 4 года назад
Hey there :D So any stone that has a hardness of 7.5 or higher can be used. The higher on the scale the lower the chance of breakage, the lower the hardness the higher risk of breakage. So garnets are hard enough but they have to be inclusion free otherwise they break. I like to keep to sapphire, rubies and diamonds :) Zircons and spinels are also pretty good.

Hi - never done any of this but would love to have a go- how do you calculate size of stones to use in relation to band width.
@sandcasting_with_kirralea
@sandcasting_with_kirralea 2 года назад
If the stone fills the entire negative space it's too big. You need about a two millimetre gap for the metal to squeeze past :)

Thanks for this really informative video, Kirra-Lea ! Can you please give me an idea of why you use the paw paw ointment, what special properties does it have? I’m in South Africa, and need to find an equivalent here!

How come your gemstones do not crack when exposed to hot metal?

Different stones can take different heat. You can look up the different stones and the heat they can take. Ive cast with obsidian in a lost waz no problem and i cast with another stone that was dyed and cabt remember what it was but it sucked all the color out.

Hi Kira What size stones do you use in your rings ?
@sandcasting_with_kirralea
@sandcasting_with_kirralea 4 года назад
Any stone that will fit inside the ring. So just like if you were setting a ring traditionally, you dont want the stone to be deeper than the ring and you need there to be about 0.5mm or metal on either side of the stone, so normally the stone is about 1mm smaller than the width of the ring. Thats just as big as you can go with the flush style cast in place. But as for as small. 1mm stones wont cast in place well or at all. 1pts is usually the smallest I will go :) Hope that helps!
