How to Catch a Dog in Three Easy Steps 

Those of us who do this all the time have learned to tie a string to the trip lever so that it can be pulled as soon as the animal is all the way in. This avoids what you experienced at first... an animal going in and taking the bait without tripping the door. If you get into a case where the animal is feral, human shy or trap shy, you will find you have to hide the trap by covering it with materials that are common in the animal's natural surroundings. You may also have to put cardboard along the interior walls of the trap to make the dog think it is just an old box, with which he is already familiar. Or line the floor with dirt or trash.

I like this method is a much more humane and painless way of catching a dog. Good job!

There is a dog that runs part of the city where I live in Texas.Many people have tried to catch her.Nothing works.She is very street smart.A rescue group has been trying to catch her since July. People feed her and she makes her rounds.Going to keep trying!!

Thank you! There is a dog that is lost and I have seen that dog but I have never caught it.

Another way for a shy dog is to set up the trap, but put a wedge in it so it wont fall, feed the dog outside the trap like a week early and gradually move the food closer to the trap then half way in, then all the way in. Let them eat inside the kennel a few days before you make the kennel "Live". And bait that trap well! not just kibble, like cat food or bacon. something that smells good and leave a very small bait at the entrance. I've caught four dogs with a trap like this in just a month. My main challenge was catching the intended dog because we have 12 stray dogs on our road alone. That, and removing them, because they're either frozen with fear or barking, growling, snapping..

The freaking dog I'm trying to catch would just laugh at me ...🙄🙄🙄

Has anyone ever thought of putting little wheels on the end of the trap to make it easier to cart those things around nevermind when they have heavy dog inside?

Would have been better if you'd used a real world example as in a dog that's really feral and shies away from human contact or proximity. And perhaps grease the hinges and rods a bit. ;)

Doesn't work in practice. Dogs usually dont go into confined enclosures. This dog probably is being feb by that person and trusts him.

But the Cage is not that smart

Doesn't work when there r more dogs around and more dominating.. the dog u want to catch will keep distance because of other dogs or run.. away... Happens where I live . Have been trying to catch a dog with ruptured testicles.. and no help is coming..

We help and catch stray dog the same way too but sometimes becus there are no good manpower people to sacrifice to come to help.. Sad And sometimes these dogs they are smart n they will not come near to u even we bring and lure them food, they will run before u could go near We need manpower n space to help them, we need cost too then only decide to help these poor souls. Sad Unfortunately, there r ppl who agreed n not agreed n dont help these poor dogs! Sometimes i dont have ppl who will share my same interest n no where i can voice😭

I have one of those but green and I caught 40 cats in total already and about 10 little mutt dogs and I called the animal shelter and got rid of them all because they were coming into my place to take my dogs food and to make holes and to pee and poop here so I got tired of it!
