How to Catch Garfish? Something to do with the Family.. Easy fishing with the kids on a Beautiful winters Day!!!
Catching garfish from a pier can be an exciting and rewarding experience for anglers. These slender, silver fish are known for their agility and can provide a fun challenge. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to catch garfish from a pier:
Choose the Right Gear: To target garfish, you'll need some specific equipment. Start with a light to medium-light spinning rod and reel combo. A 6 to 8-foot rod with a sensitive tip works well. Use a 4 to 8-pound test monofilament or fluorocarbon line for better visibility and sensitivity.
Rigging: For garfish, a basic float rig works best. Attach a small, brightly colored float to your mainline. About 3 to 4 feet below the float, tie a small barrel swivel to prevent line twist. Then, tie a 2 to 4-foot fluorocarbon leader with a small, sharp hook (#8 to #12 size) to the other end of the swivel.
Bait Selection: Garfish are primarily attracted to small, shiny baitfish. Use thin strips of freshly caught fish such as pilchards, silverfish, or small pieces of squid. Alternatively, you can also use small pieces of artificial bait like silver spoons or tiny spinners.
Casting and Presentation: Stand on the pier and cast your rig towards areas where garfish are likely to be feeding. Look for areas with structure, such as weed beds, pylons, or areas with a lot of surface activity. Garfish are often found in shallower waters, so casting close to the pier is usually effective.
Float Adjustment: Once your rig is in the water, adjust the position of the float to keep your bait at the desired depth. Garfish are known to swim near the surface, so set the depth of your bait accordingly. Adjust the float so that the bait is just below the surface or slightly submerged.
Active Retrieval: Garfish are known for their agility and tendency to swim in schools. Instead of letting your bait sit in one place, try slowly twitching or retrieving it in short, jerky motions. This mimics the movement of small baitfish and can attract the attention of garfish.
Be Patient and Observant: Garfish can be skittish and may require some patience to catch. Keep an eye on your float for any signs of movement or sudden disappearance, indicating a garfish bite. Pay attention to the behavior of other anglers around you, as garfish often move in schools, and their presence may attract a crowd of feeding fish.
Hooking and Landing: When you see your float dip or disappear, wait for a moment before striking. Garfish have a habit of picking at the bait before fully taking it, so be patient and allow them to commit. When you feel a bite, gently lift your rod tip to set the hook. Garfish have soft mouths, so avoid using excessive force.
Handling: When you land a garfish, handle it carefully as their slimy scales can make them quite slippery. Use a wet cloth or wet your hands to hold the fish securely. Be mindful of their long, needle-like beaks, as they can inflict painful stings if mishandled.
Remember to check local fishing regulations and obtain any necessary licenses before fishing. Additionally, be sure to practice responsible fishing, respect the environment, and release any unwanted catches safely.
