Compete when you have time to get under the ball and make a jump, stay down when you don’t have to compete or don’t have time to get up

You would only jump into the air to get the ball because someone else is contesting to get the ball so your best option is to jump so you have a better chance of getting the ball. The only time you go for the ball down is when someone does a highball but your the only one getting it and no one is trying to get, another reason to catch low is when someone does a low kick and you catch it when your down. That's the difference between catching the ball high and low.

If you are making struggle with opponents for high ball it is better to jump and increase your chances to get the ball. But if it is just kick from your opponent and you are not meeting opposition you can just stay on the ground and catch the ball more comfortably

I'm gonna say, and this is a guess tbh since I usually go with gut feeling during games, that you go up/jump for the ball when it's a contested catch or when the other team would running up to us and closer than ideal? And we stay down for a kick that's not contended or where we have enough time to not need to gain any ground or distance on it? That's my guess rn, guess I'll find out the actual reasons for each in a second when I unpause the video. Thanks for this amazing info! I train with the men's team since my team doesn't have a field to use and honestly I get quite scared/intimidated to catch their kicks 😂

Hey! Love the answers! Well done! Nailed it. A good tip is to help one another with those decisions. Also build up the height of the catch when doing the drills at the end. Did this video help?
@zwise145
@zwise145 10 месяцев назад
Yes, 100%!! It has very helpful info and made simple enough to understand it, the breakdown was very good, found myself thinking about the motions a lot. And the drills were an excellent bonus, I've done some but just simple ones where someone kicks and you try to catch it if it goes to your area, but these ones look pretty good for building up both technique and confidence rather than me trying desperately to not be in the area or the ball when the guys kick it 😂 I'll definitely give those a try, thanks a lot for the helpful info!

@IanDutton-c8o

Very good video thank you. As an ex semi-pro goalkeeper I agree with all points but would just add: 1. Assess your journey. Timing is key and comes with long practice. Dont commit too early especially when windy so you can move forwards to the ball area in the last few seconds and get your height. 2. Knee up is crucial for protection this video is good on that. 3. Use the goalkeeper catch if there is going to be competition in the air. When using it move your hands between your eyes and the ball and watch the ball into your hands then move hands softly with the ball onto chest with arms locking onto ball if there is contact. 4. Most important - practice, practice, practice, practice. I found it took almost two years of training 2 x half hour sessions weekly to master the catch but once you get it it will be your friend forever.

3:27 Depends on the pressure you have: if no une is competing, just star on the ground, you have way less chances of knocking it on. It also depends on your speed: if you have a ten meter run up, jump so that you keep your momentum.
