I have used the electric and 1050 riggers for many years. ru-vid.comUgkxbjBedIFSQ6Y6rp8DrCC_aoWMZI8GUpmH I bought these lake trollers for my 15’ Grumman sport boat and they worked almost perfectly for fishing lake trout. The only negative is that they seemed sticky on the retrieval, so I removed the spool and greased the underside of the stainless steel plate with some lip balm (the only thing I could think to use that I had on the boat with me). Then they worked much more smoothly. I don’t recommend using these down riggers if you’re planning on fishing deeper than 50’ as you’ll spend more time cranking than you will fishing.

Hola! I just wanted to say thank you for your tips here. this is my second year fishing and first one kayak fishing. Following this technique I landed my first three Kokanees this weekend. However I used a slider on my line and used the clip to keep it in the right place, that way if it unclips I do not lose all the set up. Again, thanks a lot!

I set my rods up with a barrel swivel, then bead then swivel snap. I have some weights that I tied a dropper line onto with a snap swivel. I can snap the weight onto the barrel swivel, then have a 3-4 foot leader back to my dodger. The line can slide through the barrel swivel when a fish hits it and you can see every bite and the fish doesn't fight the weights at all. I've caught my limit a porcupine a few times doing this. Fishing from a kayak I use heavy 6 oz weights too. I get them just past the depth of the fish, then start trolling to bring the rig up to the level of the fish. If the fish are at 25-30 feet, the line goes down 40-45 feet. If the fish are at 65 feet then the rig goes down to 80 feet. I like the idea for these line clips and I'm going to try that too. I also need to see how much line goes out when my level wind goes across the reel back and forth. That's a great idea to save money on line counters. You can get a better reel for the same price as a cheaper line counter reel.

I get the same effect with a toothpick. Put line out desired distance. Make a loop in your line and thread it through the eye of your sinker. Put the toothpick through the loop. Wrap three times with one side of the loop. Pull snug. Drop your line to the desired depth. On the retrieve, when the weight reaches the boat, pull the toothpick and the sinker drops free. Cheap and effective!

Excellent info and demonstration. To be clear, if the fish are 30' down, you'd put your weight down 50' (plus the 50' the wedding ring/maggots are set back from the weight)? Or, another way of saying it is to get your weight down 30' you drop 50' of line to compensate for the trolling motion/line angle at a regular 1.5-2 MPH troll? I'm new to trolling lakes for trout and Kokanee, so any information is appreciated!
@harrydick3300
@harrydick3300 2 года назад
You know the straight style lead has less resistance than the round lead so it will get down deeper when trolling then a round lead can with less line. This is also true for downrigger weight too especially when trolling deep you will be at least 30ft back with a 5lb Rd ball

I haven’t had an issue with that. I’ll only do the slip not if the pads are worn on the clip. They last quite a while before they start to slip.

good video. I fish with a down rigger and my wife fishes with lead core line and she out catches me every single time , hands down. She always makes fun of my down rigger. If you're fishing going down 35 feet or less, lead core line is a good way to go.

If you add a 12 inch or so dropper line between your clip and the weight, the fish will not be able to use the weight to rip the hooks out. You can use a snubber too if you are paranoid. Using that set up, the weight sort of only moves an inch or two even if the koke is going bananas and the hook is moving 6-12 inches very rapidly. The way you have it set up every time the fish pulls more than an inch or two backwards that weight will act like an anchor and yank back hard.

Matt - love the videos, but I'm still confused about getting the lines right without avoiding tangles. I want to get it right. You indicated that your second set of poles were between 40' - 60' back and they were 27' deep. Then you put down the clip weight rod, which would get down to about 30' feet deep and would be about 50' back. Wouldn't the second pole and your clip weight pole on the starboard side get tangled (they seem so close together)? Sorry if I missed something, but thanks!
@KokaneeAddictFishing
@KokaneeAddictFishing 2 года назад
Fishing with 4 downriggers and 6 lines I have found the following to work the best - I fish the rear downriggers the deepest usually around 30-50 ft deep with a short setback of 10-30 ft. My side downriggers I will fish above whatever depth my rear downriggers are at and typically a setback longer than my rear. For the last 2 poles I’ll use clip weights - putting out 50 ft of line the weight and then another 50-70 ft of line (100-120 ft total). As a rule of thumb if you set up the clip weight that way you will be about 20 ft down with a 2 oz weight, 30 ft with a 3oz, etc. Setting your poles up this way spreads things out helps prevent tangles. If you get a excited koke they can still do a good job of tangling things up. Also if it’s windy I won’t fish more than 4 lines. Hope this helps!
@Falcon361
@Falcon361 Месяц назад
Thank you so much for the detailed explanations. One question: Does the first 50 feet line stay at the same level as the weight? I get that the second half of the line should be 50 feet, but why is the first half 50 feet?
@KokaneeAddictFishing
@KokaneeAddictFishing 22 дня назад
Yes it does. It’s to give you plenty of line to be able to safely take the weight off as you’re reeling in the fish.
@Potato-Memer

can i just put the weight 36'' behind the dodger instead of 50 feet? i fish off a kayak so its hard to take it off
@KokaneeAddictFishing
@KokaneeAddictFishing 4 года назад
Yes that will work. The important thing is how much line you let out after you clip on the weight. At about 1.5mph and 50 feet out after you clip on the weight - with a 1oz you will be about 10ft down, 2oz 20ft, 3oz 30ft, etc.
@therosses5

I'm dense. So fish is on, then when the weight is reeled back to the tip, you unclip the weight so it's off the line, then fight the fish without the weight?
@KokaneeAddictFishing
@KokaneeAddictFishing 2 года назад
You got it that’s exactly right. I typically put the weight 50 ft from the lure so you still have a decent amount of line out when your unclipping the weight.

What are your thoughts about lead core?
@KokaneeAddictFishing
@KokaneeAddictFishing 4 года назад
That will work too. I've used both and prefer the weights overall. With lead core you loose the shock absorbency you get with mono and a lightweight rod. With how soft Kokanee's mouths are, every advantage you can have will help land them.

I've used both 3/4" amzn.to/3fCcLh8 and 1/2" amzn.to/2SkqaCj The 1/2" being smaller is more durable but harder to open to put the weights on. Either size should work fine. Thanks for watching!

Does the cannon ball weight work better than inline leads or teardrop weights?
@KokaneeAddictFishing

If you are using them with the clips I think they would all work. The advantage of the clips is you can easily adjust how far they are from your lure. I do like the cannonballs and the way they cut through the water.

@@FTY6150 Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy the original OR-16 snap weights from offshore tackle (red with the pin). Buy once cry once... They are immeasurably better at holding on the line even up to 10+oz lead. The chinese knock offs have too soft of plastic and the pads use a sort of latex rubber material that will slip constantly when wet. I tried to cheap out and I bought a whole bag of the knock offs and tried to use them even replacing their pads with original pads from offshore, but they still were just nowhere near as good as staying on the line. I think the original ones have really dense fiberglass infused plastic that makes them just pinch way harder without buckling like the knock offs. So now I own a bag of terrible clips that never get on the boat and just a few OR-16s that always come along.

If you want to use a fly rod to catch kokanee and get your fly down 40 or 50 feet without a weight on it and don't have a downrigger, you can use a second trolling rod as a downrigger. Use a trolling or spinning rod and reel with 20 lb mono filament line, a 1/4 lb weight and purchase a down rigger clip or use a wooden clothes pin. Attach a swivel to the end of the mono filament, add a couple of inches of mono then another swivel, connect the down rigger clip or clothes pin to this section, attach the weight to the bottom swivel. Connect the fly line to the down rigger clip and let both lines out to the required depth.

Nice informative video. I'm 59 years old and my hearing is not as good as it used to be. The techno background music is drowning out what your saying enough to make it annoying. I had 3 of my buddies around the same age as me watch this video and they said it was also hard to hear what your saying with the annoying background music. As your hearing degrades it's harder to distinguish multiple noise s at the same time. Great video but hard for older farts like me to enjoy. To all you young guys out there wear hearing protection. I didn't nearly as much as I should have and now dealing with my own stupidity.
