Gday Jim - thank you for all positive advice i can put your mind at ease . This video is nearly 1 year old now - before selling our traps we checked ALL states fishing regulations on bait traps . Our traps are 450mmx 250mm x 130 mm they come with a Stainless Screw for a tag and the opening is 50 mm . They are even for sale in fishing stores around Victoria . They are well and truly legal .. On your facebook page i saw you selling these for about $95. Bit out of my price range for a bait trap so I made a very similar bait trap using a large 7 litre clear food container from coles. Cost me around $12.

oh so this is ballyhoo, i catch tons of these every other evening in mamzar sharjah. seem like the only available fish in that area. i was not aware that these are good bait fish, last week i caught 35 of these in one hour, and the other day 24, and today 16, and some other small fish, i dnt know their names but they look like small queen fish. thanks fot the video sir.

I'm pretty sure this guy is in New South Wales. I heard that the use of cast nets is prohibited down there. Hence the need for such traps as these.

hey mate was just wondering what the best bait is for mullet an how can i keep them alive for 2days as ill be getting mullet for fishing next week but have to get it the day before i leave so they have to stay alive over night then all day untill 2:30 when i finnish work an head out will an air pump keep them alive for this time untill i get to my fishing spot? ill be putting them in a large container an about 25 mullet all up how do i go about this to make it work 100%?

To help with the bubbles, could you not drill a number of small holes in the stop of the trap?

good to hear that... and for the one's that can't afford $100+ then make one from a "starmaid" storage system 10 ltr tray with lid out of clear poly (available from spotlight, officeworks, bunnings, masters etc.).... with a 60mm hole in top, silicon glue a short cone (soft drink bottle neck) inside to keep bread burly in the box...screw say 4 lead snapper sinkers etc. in bottom... similar to yours but only cost less than $10. .... just saying... thanks, Jim

James last poddy mullet just refers to any species of mullet under 150mm long so bully mullet yellow eye mullet ect any of those under 150mm long is a poddy mullet

very odd for it to be illegal to use a cast net there, big difference here in texas, I am actually a licensed bait dealer in which I use a cast net to catch and sell mullet and other Bait to bait stands and such, and also anyone here can use a cast net, as long as they got a fishing license if they are over 17 of course,, cool video

just brought one tried it out today, had a tendency to float admitting, there was a bit of current so i put two rock's inside , there were plenty of poddy's around the trap got about 15 around 70 mm...cut myself getting the mullet out of the trap..i normally use a plastic wash basin with gauze over the top with a 70mm dia hole ..easy to remove water bait and poddy's ..i mainly got this trap for bigger jew bait's will try i still water

Try tying some line/rope/string to the drainage holes you've got in there (or tie it around the neck of the cordial bottle). Never lose it if you're a dope like me LOL.

the bottom perspex ... drill it all or use a net. firstly it will be on the floor so it will not effect anything . secondly it will remove water instantly ;) and less expensive my friend

why not get a cast net dozen casts and presto more than you need

I reckon it might be quicker to just toss some panko bread crumbs in the lake and then wait and cast over them. Those glass box things look like they would break pretty easy.

Why are they called poddys?

NSW dpi regulations also limit the size of poddy mullet for live bait to "under 6 inches" (150mm) and a bag limit of 20 total. So if you are in NSW you have bait fish in your video as greater than 150mm (as shown) and this is also outside of this rule. Do you have a explanation for this? Do you say "Wonboyn" - NSW 2551 check THE LAW.

It's cheap as bread crumbs and a few pieces of bread crust .... Perhaps dip bread crust in a little bit of tuna oil 1st to get some stink in the water

err! maybe you meant 60 cm .... as to 60 inches deep.... ( 5 feet) as I don't see you swimming and duck diving.... a cheaper way is to use a large clear water dispenser bottle or even a 20 ltr square pvc drum with a brick in the bottom to position to the entry hole and make it shallow. The bottle type can be cut and inverted neck style for a funnel look. too...sealing with silicon. happy fishin'

NSW dpi regulations say ... only 1 trap per person and dimensions are no greater than 450mm long x 350mm dia. with a max hole dia. of 60mm.... so I see that your trap would not be "legal" in NSW... also where is your tag on it with the appropriate "BT" and name and address? better get it legal before selling on your ideas and traps.... see dpi regs for your state.., Jim
