My wife gives me a hard time because I live near Lake Simcoe, have spent thousands of dollars on ice fishing gear, and still only manage to bring home a few jumbos each trip. "Oh great! These 6 fish tacos only cost us $2583!" ya I know honey, I'm working on it - Jay just put out another tips video so this weekend we will have 7 tacos!
I hate when I bring a fish in and the wife tells me how much that fish coast and the next fish and the next fish. It never ends. Will it ever be a positive number for a fish or is it always in the negatives? 😂
@@stanfamoutdoors it’s ALWAYS negative. Once you factor in the time-value of money, anything smaller than a white-tailed deer is negative cost lol. Even white tailed deer are border-line break even. The most profitable wild meat is beaver, as dried castor is worth about $100/lb and you can catch that in a season. And the meat is delicious.
Interesting.... Lots of strategy for sure, and tons that I wouldn't have thought of. Curious why your not bonking/bleeding and putting on ice. I see lots do the same with perch specifically and have wondered what's different about them. Cheers!
Good stuff boys. Perch fishing is an art. I used to go with my uncle and he would catch triple the fish with the same bait 10 ft away. Eventually started to pick up on his little tricks and what the fish were doing, electronics helped paint the picture and now that we have live imaging we can actually see it all. Cool to see John and I have picked up on a lot of the same techniques and approaches with calling them in and using teamwork and speedy bait changes to keep them interested!
I find I have a tool belt full of moves to make them bite an every day is different N I still learn new ways.. Thanks for the knowledge anytime Jay N John are giving away free information I’ll be tuned in 👍🎣🇨🇦
-20c?? C’mon, Jay. Are you starting to wimp out on account of the weather? Where’s your pop-over tent thingy. Thoroughly enjoy your videos - heartfelt wishes and all the best on the upcoming beginning of your family.
Love it! I can't resist going after Perch for fun and food! Many years ago when we lived in Wawanesa, we would icefish down at Pelican Lake for Walleye but there is a lake out by Souris called Oak Lake that has The Best Perch fishing I have ever seen! We set up our shelter after drilling our holes and for the next 45 minutes to an hour we limited out with Jumbo Perch, and I mean these were just hogs well over a pound and some past two pounds, it was such a good day! I only managed to fish Oak Lake twice in the five years we lived there but it was Perch fishing heaven. Just that Lake alone makes me want to move back to Manitoba, That's how big a deal fishing there was!! Oh and the Walleye fishing was pretty choice too!!
Jay on your way up to canada drop into pelican lake (ninette) the perch fishing there is amazing right now.... I've caught 14 inch perch there this year its really hot right now
perch fishing on a tiny 2 acre pond has produced me good results without sonar, under 100 bucks of ice gear and tackle, most of it was the spud bar and a couple of northland forage minnow spoons. they aren't all hogs, but I get a couple fat ones around 13 inches that i get to marvel at and slip back thru the ice. keep waxies on hand and they'll be there!
Lake St. Clair back in the 70's there was no limit. Catching 100+ 8 to 12" common around end of Feb. mid-March in 4' to 5' of water! The dirtier the water the better. They would bunch up together in tighter schools from bottom to under the ice. Catch 6 to 8 in a minute using a bead spoon a few times an hour as the school would move around.
Snobearrrr!!!! Dang Jay, your Devil's Lake videos are awesome! I might have to get out there soon! I've been there once for open water white bass, and it was awesome!
I was recently on a hot perch bite, A hot perch bite can be some of the most fun you can have Ice fishing .. Awesome video again, this whole ND trip series has been fire !
Jay, you gotta come to europe and go for some redfin perch! Not only do they grow bigger than yellowfin, they are also suuuch good eating! Also might wanna go for some zander while you're here :)
Hey Jay. How long would you say you have to filled your perch after catch. There are days I come hone with quite a bit of fish bit not always in the mood to clean them all that day. Just curious if I wanted a day or 2 to clean, would that be ok?
Brother I used to live in Vermont and fish lake Champlain. We would catch a pail full of perch sometimes in an hour and the next day they were hard to find
Used my new pantastick from frostbite this week on some st Clair jumbos!! Rod performed great, impressed with how it loaded up to handle the big ones ! You guys should invest in some beaded spoons! Kens hooks or slab grabbers! 👍keep up the good work !
Hey Jay how many Sunday newspapers did you have to buy to fill the bottom of that pail before you started to fill the last quarter of it with perch buddy??? Just kidding buddy that is definitely awesome work on filling a 5 gallon bucket full of perch!! That’s definitely awesome!! I actually got on a crappie bite the last couple days and definitely was able to fill a five gallon bucket with crappies!!! Definitely my best time ever out ice fishing for sure!! I was also able to get on my very first walleye ever ice fishing!! Definitely a blast but not the biggest walleye ever at 10” but the big ones will come hopefully sooner than later!!! Remember Jay keep up all the hard work buddy!!!
Devils truly is a world class fishery… hard to beat the winter perch bite, unbelievable amounts of 2-4 pound white bass, massive pike, limitless walleyes, and the occasional 18 inch crappie
