Try them smoked. 30 plus years ago, there was a place on Dauphin Isle Pkwy in Mobile, a little plywood shack that sold them smoked. Or smoke some yourself. Before I ever ate any, we always used mullet for crab bait, most folks called them bottom feeders, and consuming mullet was almost taboo. The same goes for Croakers until you try one, sweet meat, good eating fried.
I have a disabling injury also, that people wouldn't know about; unless you tell them. Thank you for your service! Also, thank you for perseverance! Respect.
I grew up eating fried mullet. Other than pond or creek bream or cats mullet was all the fish we ate (and shrimp & oysters). I was grown before i had smoked mullet and get in love with it! I was grown when i also had the filets and backbones as we had always just cut they mullet in half. And we always are the fins! That was the first thing we ate on the fish! My little girls call them "the crunchies". 😂. Enjoyed the video. And subscribed! Thank you for that video and thank you for your service! This Country and it's people owe you more than we could ever pay!
Really enjoy your content. I'm across the bay in Theodore and am pretty new to the area after retiring from the Marine Corps. You ever need a 1st mate for a run, let me know!
My wife's favorite fish! And I love the roe! I use Old bay as well but every now and then, I will get out the Zatarans! I do Crokers the same way. Good video, 👍👍👍
Feeding your Mom some fresh seafood reminded me when I was thirteen and brought home some spiny lobster that I caught at the inlet to my Dad's amazement. We ate large and he was pleased.
As a young boy in Bayou La Batre, I remember my dad cooking grits, biscuits and mullet for supper. He was a shrimper and we moved away after hurricane Frederic. Yearly vacations were always to Dauphin Island and the bayou. Hopefully moving back to the gulf coast this fall, trying to reconnect with my roots. I totally enjoy every video you make. I miss my dad a lot and this video brought back a lot of memories.
I use cast netted mullet all the time as cut bait for sharks, reds, blues, trout and have eaten it a few times as well in local spots but never had the know-how to clean/cook it myself. I’m definitely giving it a try now.
The dry and salted mullet roe sack is used very much in Italian cooking. Grated on pasta, for example. It's actually very good. Love your channel. Best.
hey i live in florida and i catch mullet on line and hook all the time. secret is use oat meal. mix 1 quaker oats container with 1 small garlic powder container and 3/4 cup flour. add water until you get soft balls you can form with your hands. ( only make this mixture once your ready to fish) toss about 2 or 3 balls at a time and mixture make about 7 or 8 balls. next tie a Siddiqui line with 6 hooks. take any kind of white bass worm and cut it quarter inch and place on the tip of your hook. saltwater only !
I love your videos! My kids and I live in Tampa and are always out fishing somewhere! Not many Moms that take our kids out! Thank you for your service and keep the awesome videos coming!
I use plain yellow mustard instead of egg to moisten my fish before rolling in the coating mixture. This is Texas, so fried fish get yellow corn meal. I add not quite as much yellow corn masa and the old bay, black pepper, garlic and onion powder, etc. It's hard to beat a good plate of fried fish and taters Thanks for the video
Never had mullet before, but when we go to Ocracoke island NC, we catch huge mullet in small creek like areas that go under route 12, but we just use them for bait. As good as those look, l can't wait for vacation. Great video as always. Thanks for your service.
Fried mullet is the absolute best eatn' fish in the South. My dad learned me to throw a net when I was old enough to handle the weight. Those were Blessed times. BTW... did you see that porpoise jump behind you? (about 10:32 ish)? Thx man, for another great post! TY!
Do you clean your reels after each trip? If so, how? Do you use anything in specific? A video showing off your commonly used gear (rods, reels, tackle, etc.) would be interesting.
I usually will lightly spray them off with the hose. After every few trips, I'll take some Boeshield T-9 lubricant and drop it on the reel handle and roller.
Gotta give it a go with a rod and reel. Chum with a little oatmeal, and use a long shank #6 or #8 hook and a split-shot under a small bobber. Thin slices of a white bass worm for bait. Light tackle is perfect. Ultralight tackle will wear you out if you get on a hot bite. A 2 pound mullet thinks he's a 5 pound redfish for the first 30 seconds of the fight!
Funny I was just on vacation in the outer banks. There were some giant mullet in the sound jumping every morning..went out many times with my rod and no mullet lol. Darn mullets!
Us mexican love mullet when i was little my dad would always take me to catch sum big mullet and wed take alot back home and fry em up and the rest for bait.
There is no better eating than fried mullet. Some hushpuppies, coleslaw.... Love the roe Stephen, also the gizzard. Oh man, you lost me at Old Bay.....Zatarain's is best.
Your videos are awesome and its sad seeing you restricted with the injury to your hand. You should really work on strengthening it to haul in those big fish by the offshore rigs!! Keep up the videos and lets see you recover 100%
Great video, fresh mullet are hard to beat when they are fried like you did they looked delicious. I love roe especially the yellow, I think you would like it too, they need to be fried right but some like it and some don't.
Dang good video, absolutely love the information and instructions on all your videos. Can you do a cast net video on how to load and throw the net? ✅💥✌️
Man I love your channel it's nice to see someone that knows what they're talking about and knows what they're doing that only depends on their knowledge, unlike a couple of clickbaiters out there I'm not talking about bearded Brad!
Steve I have been watching you along time. I was watching you through the net on Fair hope peer . I am from Grand Bay and still have kin folks in Mobile and Fair hope area. But I made and threw cast nets for 35 years . Then transferred to TX. with my job. Am now retired. I am Vet retired and disable. I like your videos. What i would like for you to do is turn your net in side out and go down from the bell you have brill net and it works just as good on a bag net . But about 5 to 8 inches down from the top spread the net out and spray a circle about 2 to 2 1/2 inches in diameter need about 5 circles . And next time you throw for mullett watch them come to the top of the net and hit the paint circles to them it looks like a hole in the net and they try to get out. I am 75 and if i was able to breath i would be throwin g a net. Keep making good videos If you try it let me know how you like it. I had 8 nets and all had painted holes on them.
Cool video man. I'm going try that. I'm just south of Tampa Bay. Sometimes our mullet are super spooky and tough to cast net. Other times they come right next to the boat and it's easy.
Growing up when I stayed with Grandma we would cast net Mullet at sunrise and she would fix fried Mullet, eggs, and grits for breakfast I miss those days.
Pull the plastic covers off that motor when spraying that T9 its works alot better to get everything coated and grease prop shaft if you didn't sign your friendly yamaha tech subscriber love the videos
Obviously I don't know anything about you, but I would like to thank you for your service. Love how you took the first bite of that tail, like a potato chip. God bless you and your family. Looking forward to your next video
That's the way to fry mullet, fillet and backbone. But I like the roe as well. You made me hungry and home sick for alabama. Texas is nice but not home.
Try dipping in seasoned flour, then egg, then flour again or bread crumbs. It will help your breading to adhere to the filet better. Love your videos! 😊
