How to catch Snapper on Fly in Auckland - Deep Drift Method

Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed it. It works really well. I used to do more of it than trout. The fish are much stronger and there are more species. Got 2 kingfish today.

@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Hi Johan, what boat are you using? It looks like a smartwave 3500? How is it for getting out to the islands, when the chop gets up, it gets home ok?

@@SnapCracklePop-dd7di Yes it's a Smarwave 3500 from 2017. I think the newer model might be slightly different. It's super stable for fishing and a really soft ride but being centre console it gets pretty wet in chop. The bow also sits low in the water when there is a load in it so you have to be careful at low speeds in chop or you will take waves over. I only venture out beyond rangitoto on flat calm days with a stable forecast. I'm a fair weather fisherman anyway. I have been out tot he Noises and even out all the way to the hen and chicks one day alongside another boat on a super flat calm day but this is more of an inner harbour boat. The bigger models would be better suited for going further out.

Sam's book was one of the first fly fishing books I bought when I came over in 2003. I sadly had to sell it when I moved overseas temporarily in 2012 but it's a great book. Salt fly hasn't really taken off yet but there is so much untapped opportunity and I have had some incredible days on the water. This was a very slow day but still ended up able to feed the family well. All of that in the middle of s big city. Tigh lines

It most definitely was. I've been forgetting how good the local fly fishing can be and foccused on trout too much.

Kahawai are so much fun though, especially when they are schooling ok the surface. Then I drop everything and go chase the schools. Such a fun visual way of fishing. The deep snapper are a good way to get some food though or make up for an otherwise slow day. Feels like summer is kicking in today and I know some kings were landed on fly yesterday so I'm super excited to get back out. Tight lines and let me know how you do with the snapper down deep.
