Great video! I would suggest the reason that your having trouble hooking these fish is the heavy leader and too big hooks, they feel that resistance from them and spit it out. When using similar baits use a treble (#8) hook and also use braided line for more sensitivity, you will definitely feel the bite easier. This drop rig is the same that my grandfather used for 75 years and it what I was taught to use at a young age, although I haven't used this rig for trout in still water for years I just figure out how high the weeds are and pinch a split shot on the line at the appropriate depth. My go to bait for still water trout fishing is the bright green Power bait with glitter in it, just make sure you put enough on the treble hook (cover the hook up completely) so the bait floats (above the weeds). You can test this before you cast it out. I'm surprised that the corn wasn't very effective, when I was a kid we caught bucket loads of trout with corn but it was always in moving water. As a side note my favorite bait for trout is a threaded live fathead minnow on an open shank double #8 hook however it is almost impossible to use this in a stocked trout lake because the blue gills and bass will hit them on almost every cast before the trout gets to it. PS; If you guys and gals are flounder fishermen there is a guy on You Tube who trolls for them while using a kayak, I believe in Long Island sound, with a Go Pro camera on his rigs. You will get to see some great videos and you will get to see some really fascinating video of fish behavior as the flounder chase and get caught on his rigs. Great video. Watching this really improved my hook up rate. Seeing how trout bite, I realized I was presenting bait that was too big. Cut it up smaller and things improved tremendously.

I'm 74 and have a great deal of experience with stream trout. I've tried lots of baits fished lots of ways. The very best for stream trout are small, super lively, worms. Trout will take these even when they're scared and totally off feeding. That squirming action bugs them and they'll eventually take the worm. Use a no. 6 Aberdeen hook with drop shot for a lake or just floated downstream in the current.

I loved this! It was alot of fun. It reminded me if when I was a kid, I would pleaad with my dad to take me fishing with him and my brothers when they would have their annual "just the boys" fishing trip. My brothers never had a problem with my going, so of course, they were just the coolest brothers (and Dad) in the universe! I was just not content staying home doing "girl stuff" with my 4 sisters; bo-ring! It was additionally exciting, as I love the outdoors and animals of all kinds, so I got the best of both worlds. We would go trout fishing mainly along the Tuolomne river in Northern California, (in the vicinity of Yosemite Nat.Park) where I, and they, always caught fish. Those were the days in the early 1970's, of some very happy memories! I was about 9-10yrs old at the time. It was so beautiful there, patches of goldeny-green grass, a variety of majestic and colossal granite boulders generously clustered in the landscspe, and a mixture of oaks and multiple pines that smelled amazing woven thru the fresh mountain air. You could literally drink the water right out of the river, without having to consider if it was a bio hazzard or contaminated with who-knows-what. Most of he time, my pop had those colored salmon eggs and or worms, and they seemed to work good enough. These are memories I am especially fond of, considering my brother and father are no longer alive, and no longer see or hear from my step brother anymore, so our trout fishing trips have a special place in my heart, and its where my dad taught me how to fish! I'm so grateful to have been able to explore the absolute world class beauty of that geographically outstanding location. Even after all these years and with so many things that have changed and unlikely holds the same prestine appearance, the Tuolomne still flows just as beautifully, and is large enough in June after the snow has melted, that you can distinctly hear the sound of its rushing water, rolling thru the woods approaching it from a distance. The water was always crystal clear, and there were parts of it that were deep enough to go for a refreshing dip on a hot day. It was also fun to have lunch with my dad while we talked about the fish we caught, while pointing out all the beautiful sights in our surroundings. It was during our lunch when we had made the discovery, that the rainbow and German brown trout in this river, love cheese! Some had fell to the ground while making lunch and had gotten too sandy to eat, and not wanting to attract yellow jackets (like Wasps) or ants, we tossed in the river. We were stunned at the reaction that occurred a few minutes after! Even the craw daddy's (like small lobsters) started making their way twards it as they travelled onto the open sandy patch where it landed, and the fish would dart out from shade of the rocks that surrounded it. Dad and I knew we were onto something, and thought we'd go for a change in our bait. Much to our surprise, We caught several fish, one after the other, until we ran out of cheese. By this time, my brothers had come back from up the river, because the fish weren't biting as much in the heat of the afternoon sun. They were understandably jealous and a bit puzzled how we caught so many fish compared to them. We headed back to our campsite so we could clean them up for dinner, and let them in on our discovery. We got to try the cheese bait one more time the next morning before we left for home. And we all caught even more. Every now and again it feels good to think about times like those. This video was fun to watch, as jogged my memory of this fun time I had, by seeing someone experimenting with a bait selection. It was definitely interesting and so much more complete seeing the effect it had on the fish with the underwater camera. It was fun and interesting to see and I really enjoyed it. Awesome that you gave us a little insight on how trout react to different types of bait... One thing I would recommend is going to a braided line so you can feel the bites it would've send shock waves to your pole and you know when to set the hook...

Great stuff! I like using Wanglers (European Nightcrawlers) when I use bait and bobber, otherwise tossing a Mepps Aglia 1 in rainbow trout color scheme, a small Kastmaster silver spoon, or a Rebel Wee Crawfish crankbait are my go-tos.

I use corn as my go to bait for trout and use just plain old frozen corn, put it in a container to take out with me and then sprikle some garlic powder on top or into the corn, just like the powerbaits have it added into them as well. I have never NOT caught trout using this technic. Great video's and easy to follow tips on gear and little extra's to enhance the experience.

Berkley gulp sandworms (yes saltwater) in camo color, all I really use for stocked trout any more. Usually on a larger hook like a size four octopus, helps to prevent gut hooking.

Really enjoyed this video - those fish are really smart - I have caught brown trout in a pond on corn but mainly use spinners with a small piece if worm. Was surprised they liked the bread so much. Up on Manitoulin Island there are a lot if escaped farmed rainbows that go crazy for shrimp when ice fishing.

Right on, great video. Worms are always my favorite, but its' always different. Power bait works good on newly planted hatchery fish.

Combining a worm with a salmon egg always works well for me.

Great Video! I Fish a high lake in Oregon called Diamond Lake. Mainly a rainbow lake up to 15 lb rainbow have been caught average is 3-5 lb. I have fished the lake for 35 years. I use white marsh mellow and 1/2 a night crawler. I thread the marsh mellow down the line to the top of a # 16 gold treble hook and thread the worm thru the hook leaving about 1in tail of the worm. The marsh mellow helps float the worm. Very successful and big rainbow. The other good bait is rolled up round Velveeta cheese balls about the size of your thumb nail Slide cheese ball down the line onto the #16 gold treble hook so no hooks show.. You can also add 3 red balls of fire fish eggs to each hook with the cheese. You will catch more fish than you can believe. Always still fishing off the bottom from 12' to 50 ft of water depending on weather and water temp. I use different flavors of power bait that works well. but if the fish are not hitting it, I will go to the worm and marsh mellow or the Velveeta cheese and most times catch fish. Hope this technique catches you bigger and more fish.

Interesting to see how they operate under the water. They sure do hit their target pretty ferociously for such unintimidating fish. That’s why I’ve always loved to trout fish. They’ve got a lot of heart and thrash and fight quite a lot. Pretty particular and clever little fellas too. It seems like their appetite changes from day to day.

Wax worms are a real popular bait on a bobber for trout, especially stocked trout go crazy for them in my experience.

In the mid 1960,s an old man would always catch a lot of trout on the bottom.He saw me watching him one day and called me over . he showed me his secret weapon,velveta cheese ,he would roll a small ball .The trout loved it.I haven,t used it since then lol

The best bait I've found for trout is any insect found in the water. In a stream, the best bait, hands down, is Helgromites (unhatched may fly larvae) who are found on the bottom side of rocks in running water. Next to that, crickets are killer on trout. I grew up using salmon eggs for trout and have always had good success using them. I've also used florescent power worms that worked good for me.

Great video, I think these are stocked trout in a lake, correct? Just shows that many different baits are possible and some more effective than others. Before Powerbait was popular we used mini march mellows. Awaiting a comparisons on Powerbait, power worms, mouse tails, etc. versus marshmallows, lures, and natural bait like nightcrawlers, or crickets. I was once fishing a small native trout river with someone who had crickets. I forgot what I was using but we could see the fish and were sight casting. He hooked the crickets and casted upstream above the trout. Once hooked the crickets floated and were moving their legs in a fast erratic action. The trout attacked every time one floated by. I imagine they produce the ideal bait trifecta of sound, smell, and sight that is too irresistible for predators feeding on the surface. I’m not sure what would happen if the crickets were placed towards the bottom, if the crickets would die or not or how stocked trout would react to them since they are grown up eating man made food. I also wanted to point out that the trout behave differently in a river versus a lake. Most perhaps all fish are sensitive to water temps. In a river temps are more constant and fish prefer structure to wait and ambush prey that moves down stream. Stocked trout have been raised in a certain water temperatures (I think around 55 degrees). So they will tend to be attractive to the water temps they are conformable in. So perhaps the most important step in a lake is finding those holes which have water temps that the trout prefer. A lot of bank fishermen set up their poles and chairs and hope for a bite. IMO it is better to be mobile. Casting a few times in a 10 to 2 o’clock pattern and if not getting bit move on to another location

My favourite montage for trout's in the winter months is: 5 m (200 IN) fishing rod with very soft top, mainline 0,20 mm (0,008 IN), anti-tangle-boom with 25 gram lead weigth, a little rubber bead with conical whole to protect the knot (like a shock absorber). Than a conical triple speed swivel with snap. As following important! Length: 2,0 m (78 IN) of 0,16 mm (0,0063 IN) Fluorcarbon rig or leader - line, 1. Rubberstopper, 0,8 gram lead weigth, 2. Rubberstopper to move for desired floating depth and a little thinwired red hook wit a small red Styropor ball. Around the ball you attach the floating bait/dough + 1 bee maggot or 5/6 Fly maggots on the top of the hook. Our floating bait consists of dough with the taste of cadaver, liver, halibut, garlic, shrimp and other. If you use cadaver, you need a lot of one way gloves ❗❗❗ Theese stink on your fingers and nose 👃 you will never leave it for the rest of the day, believe it, it makes you vomit on the grass. To use only in the public. You can take little marshmallows too. Put them in a little lockable, odor-proof box/bottle and than put carefully 5/6 drops of cadaver - oil on it, close and shake it well. Now waiting 24 ours. But don't store it in the house 🏠 or flat❗❗❗ Your wife is killing you slowly, for real 🤣🙈😜❗best store it in a plastic bag with enough tape, consider, you will take it in your car. Our Trout's are very picky, like a princess, weather, air pressure and changed wind's influence there appetite. For the first time my buddy showed me this method and now I know: Trout's are crazy about this cadaver bait, unbelievable. Greetings from 🇩🇪 and a happy and Corona-free new year 💐 🍀🍻🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣

Absolutely the best trout bait I have found is crickets. Petco and Petsmart sell them as reptile food and they are unreal as trout bait.
