In today's video we change out a THERMOSTAT in a 2006 LOTUS ELISE. This was not a very easy job. It took quite a bit of time. However, the job is done and it was a CONFIRMED SOLUTION to last week's problem. We also show HOW TO REMOVE AN ALTERNATOR and WHAT COOLANT DOES A LOTUS ELISE TAKE.

Thanks for the video! I've just done replacing my thermostat over the weekend and it was not bad at all. I followed you and completely removed the alternator. The only thing I've made different is that I drained all the coolant from the vehicule prior to remove the thermostat. I strongly suggest to do so, it prevent the coolant mess and it's a good opportunity to flush the system at the same time.

The better coolant to use would be the Toyota Long life coolant (pink) as this is a Toyota motor and the sensors and engine material was made for that coolant specifically.

Thanks for the video, I just needed to grab my alternator out. Saved me from jacking my car up and going through that hassle.

Well, I did everything from the top - got the belt off, removed both screws for alternator, removed bracket screw, and removed the two electrical feeds to the alternator. Now, it pivots back and forth (front to back in relation to car) but I can’t actually pull it out. It just pivots. At around 10:00 in the video you guys mention a j-style bracket and releasing the alternator from it, but it’s sort of rushed and unclear as to really do that. Do you remember how to get the alternator off of the bracket at this point? He mentioned knocking it off but I’m so confused.. which way? Please help lol

Update for anyone else who stumbles into this needing help: I ended up getting the alternator out. Not sure why it feels “stuck” but I took a pry bar and just sort of pried it a bit from the left side and pushed it towards the wheel. Eventually it just came free and I pulled it up and out through the top. Somehow the entire belt fell off so in my desire to give myself less work by not having to do work through the wheel well, I’ll need to do that anyway to reassemble the belt. But it *is* possible to remove the alternator only from the top

Glad this video is helping other lotus owners... or I should say lotus owners. I sold the Elise in October of 2017... today the Evora was packed into a trailer and went away to a new home. I am now Lotusless...

Good vid. I still have the stock t-stat in my Exige. I wonder if you or the prior owner used water wetter or other additives? Don't. Those products have soap which reduces surface tension (good for cooler temps), but the soap also degrades the t-stat seal which was your problem here.

+Matt Osbourne I have heard multiple things. You are correct the additives can degrade the seal. However I have also read that Lotus recommends a thermostat change every two years. So, if they say that then it must be a common failure. I'd say you are going well on the stock one and wish you many more years of good luck. PS: Thank you for the support.

@@TH4TU53RN4M3TH0REVIEWS I can't understand why anyone would put a new original-style thermostat in there when there are plenty of metal-to-metal thermostats available which cannot fail in the way that so many of the original-style thermostats have failed.

Yo thanks for the video man ... about to take this on soon.. question one ... where did you get the thermostat? Number two .. did you have any issues with bubbles in the system after refill?

Purchased OE t-stat from Lotus not too expensive. No bubble issues to speak of.

Did the temp gauge drop under heavy acceleration mine sits at Constant temperature but as soon as I accelerate hard the temperature drops gauge drops into the blue

Does your Elise have A/C? I don't see the lines that are right in the way on the frame rail on the passenger side of mine. I also have the factory SC, so I'm having trouble figuring out if I need to remove more parts to get to the T-stat housing. Thanks for the video. :)

I thought all Elise cars sold in the USA had factory AC. Some folks have taken them out for weight reduction.

Elise cars were spec'd both ways. The exige did not have AC for weight reduction.
