I’ve got a 2016 lml, and when I bought it GM said to change it around 45,000 miles. Do you think me letting it go that long has hurt it? Im about to start doing it as you suggested. Thanks!

For whats it's worth, I change my Allison spin on filter every 25k miles and top off with Transynd. Every 100k, I drain the system and refill. Every 200k I double drain and do the internal filter. My Allison made it to 1.2 million miles of towing pretty heavy and often before getting a rebuild. LB7 now has 1.3 million on the odometer.

Good idea! I was doing it every 30,000 miles, but will change it at 10,000 miles on my 2005 GMC 2500. I wish all AUTO XMSN filters were this easy to change. I have over 350K miles on this XMSN, and it is still performing great. I also use synthetic Dexron III fluid in it, not the super expensive Allison TranSynd fluid, and it works just fine. No issues at all. And, I read that GM drains the Transynd fluid at the factory, and replaces it with Dexron III before the new trucks leave to be delivered at a dealership..
@jaredmayer3960
@jaredmayer3960 2 года назад
Transynd is PAO and is superior to that swarf you’re pouring in your transmission. GM wouldn’t pour our transynd to replace fluids…I heard GM recycles every 2nd truck as it leaves the assembly line too.

GM recommends 22,500 for fuel filter. The dash DIC matches that. Some guys I know do every 15,000. It will be worse the colder climate you live in. As for the spin on, I do every 10-12.5k miles…. It’s really easy…

Good video just curious though if you’re not sure on what fluid was put in the truck originally be it AC Delco or transynd or some other fluid is it OK to mix fluids as long as it’s dexron VI since a little bit of fluid drops out when you change the filter?

I got EFI live right now with a man-back exhaust and Banks Cold air intake with superscoop. About to hook up my Air Dog 2 finally and we'll see if that'll save the ole CP3. Not sure if it helps or hurts. And EFI live also provided a Trans tune which I'd say is a defenite plus but does take some getting used to. Actually the maintenance interval is 30k on the spin on filter and 100k for the internal as per GM maintenance schedule. Don't use aftermarket filters. Either use the Allison filter or the ac delco filter available at GM dealerships. Also drain the dexron fluid and upgrade to Castrol 668 ATF . The difference between original dex 3 or dex 6 ATF and the Castrol Trans Synd 668 is the service mileage. Dex 3 is 30 k miles, dex 6 is 100k miles, Castrol trans synd 668 mileage is 300k miles.

Thank you for making this video. I am a fairly new Duramax Diesel owner. I also thought all the trans fluid would drain out. That looks easier than an oil change or fuel filter change, I do both of those on my own. I will be doing this right away and often. Thanks again!
@markdavid4897
@markdavid4897 3 года назад
You won't drain out more than half, because the torque converter is not being drained. The best you can do is drain it. Drive it for a month, then drain it again, where you are increasing the percentage of older fluid to newer fluid. In most cases, that is enough.

Question i have is that i bought a 2016 lml and it has 120k on it. I contacted the previous owner and the trans has never been serviced at all. Is it a good idea to replace that filter. I really want to do a full service but have always heard if its never been done don't do it

If its never been serviced, it needs to be serviced. That old wives tale will not apply to automatic transmissions. Need to service the external and internal filters as well.

Just a little hint A break the filter loose but not leaking I take a small Phillips bottle of my hand I just bumped the screwdriver up into the bottom of the filter then I loosen the filter oil runs out that holds that all around the top not quite so messy you don’t have to wait for the whole thing to drain just wait for it to leak down below sea level I found it be easier to be neat and clean enjoyed your video

GM doesn’t recommend swapping the internal, until you run into a rebuildable situation. That filter is way more coarse, and would only catch some things from a failure. In other words, don’t worry about it IMHO.

This is all new to me. My ‘20 Duramax is my first diesel since my ‘97 Ford. My truck has reminders for fuel filter, def, oil change, air filter, etc., but nothing on a Trans Filter. Also, my truck has 49k miles on it, and all my service work, from oil changes, to tires is done at my local Chevy dealership. If this is so important, why has no one from the dealership ever mentioned it, and why is there no notification warning as there is for everything else? Is GM deliberately trying to hide this from us, ‘cause it wouldn’t surprise me? I’m not trying to be argumentative, just trying to follow this to its logical conclusion. Thanks!

For an oil filter that is vertical or on a diagonal, I'll take a large nail & w/ a hammer pierce the center(or lowest point) of the filter housing to let the fluid drain...then remove. If you're in a hurry; let the oil drain from the filter for 15-25 seconds, then plug the hole w/ a wood dowel & remove the filter. The filter in the video is small so it'll only take a minute to flow to a drip. I've been doing this on the huge oil filter on my IH/Ford 7.3 Diesel. Keeps the work area & me much cleaner.

@@carmiethompson2676 this is a horrible idea, the first time the filter is siezed on there and you can’t get it off now you can’t take the truck anywhere to get fixed or go buy a different tool to help get it off yourself or even come back to it . Make sure the filter will come off first .
