When we owned the Passat (before it got Dieselgated), I did this once, at 40K, rather than pay the absurd amount to have it done. This method works very well, and I did it in the garage, with ramps, did not consider leveling at all- no need to when it’s just drain / measure / refill. Drove it for another 35K before selling it back to VW. The only bitchy part was getting the battery tray out. Without that step, it would be a piece of cake.

@@matthewethier1977 Yep, just filled it through the hole in the center of the filter housing. There’s a funnel called a “Flo-Tool” that fits it perfectly. And I ran the kitchen sink full of hot water and preheated the transmission oil bottles in it, made the fill very fast.

Great video..Although I own a Skoda Yeti 2.0 litre tdi with 6 speed DSG, I presume the principle is the same..I'll probably fill from the top with around 4.6 litres, (A little slow I believe) run the engine until gearbox is the required temperature, run through the gears and then remove the drain plug and capture the excess fluid from above the plastic snorkel, replace the drain plug and voila, all is done! (I hope:)

It is not accurate at all. The coolant temp and the trans temp which is measured at 90 can vary depending on how long the car run for and the trans fluid takes much longer to warm up relative to the water temp. Maybe an infra red thermometer will give you a better base line but this method is certainly not recommended for accuracy

One other way this can be done is take two identical buckets and weigh them. Weigh the fluid taken out and the filter together. Now you know the exact amount that you need to put back in. On the next bucket weigh the filter and put the matching weight of fluid. Use a small manual pump from ECS tuning to put the fluid back it. Done !!!! No need for VCDS and accurate to the last drop.

Hi there! Thank you for this informative video!!! I have a 2004 Audi A4 1.8t with CVT Multi-tronic transmission.. It's a similar procedure, regarding filling fluid with slight differences in plugs, type of ATF fluid filter setup etc.. However the principles are the same proper fill temps between 35 - 45c, gravity fed pump, and drip fluid level check.. although there are two plugs on my particular transmission, one to drain and the other to fill.. I filled the same amount that came out 6quarts, while the care in the air, I then Attempted to cycle through the gears 2 second intervals on each PRNDS.. Unfortunately I got an abs light go on along with traction control light signifying brakes have failed.. There was resistance to the brake pedal as though it were pushing back against my foot, not sure if the trans is some how in sync with the brakes system (I have not touched the brake system at all), not sure whether I've done something wrong during the fill process to cause the brakes to react this way.. I have not put the car back on the ground to test whether this was a result of the wheels dangling off the ground freely.. I used a bug spray type pump with an adapter screwing onto the fill port to pump the Atf fluid in trans.. The pump builds pressure, 10 to 15 psi to pump fluid in trans.. not sure if pumping fluid in with this type pressure may have caused an issue V.S the gravity fed syle funnel.. Any feedback or suggestions will be great help and very much appreciated!!! Best regards Tony

Remove mechatronix metal cap and drain remaining 1.3-1.5l of oil. This is the correct way to remove almost all 6l of oil. You've done 100's of these right???

How would filling through the filter be done? I'm assuming that it's pretty straight forward and just pour fluid in. But I noticed how you had to suck fluid out, so is there some sort of separation in there?

If you can change this cars oil you can change the DSG fluid as well. It is easy! You can do this faster by putting the fluid by a heater or in the sun. Drains into the top fill hole faster (if you go that route). I measured mine including the filter part and put back 4.6L. That was at 33,000 miles now at 38,000. No issues. Dealer quoted me $500 I laughed. Shop were I got my tune quoted me $300. Did it for $140.

hahaha just had the dealer quote me $500 too... and I said "oh wow, that's it? How much extra would it be to have you guys replace the muffler bearings? I think they're starting to go out" which drew a death stare from the service advisor. Lousy pricks wouldn't even reset the service interval because I refused their $850 75k service. I love my A3 TDI, but I'm gladly giving it back and taking my settlement money to buy something where the dealer doesn't try to rape me for $500+ every 10k miles, when all it really needs is an oil change.

Couldn't you measure how much fluid comes out after you warm up and drain, then fill the same amount back in before installing the new filter on the top of the Trans .. It looked like the fluid level was past the snorkel when you drained it, so I am a little confused on how much should go back in. The contraption you used to fill it back up kind of made me think twice about doing it. With that said up until your video I know idea how to change the fluid or if it even could be, so I thank you for that.
@GaryMarkowski
@GaryMarkowski 3 года назад
Based on your comment, I have the impression the fluid levels are not correct in many cars then. I prefer to take the time to fill the transmission, start the car, put the transmission through all the gears, put it into park, what for the temp to get to 100 F, remove the drain plug keeping the car running, and closing the plug once you have reached about 105 F. This likely will result in a more accurate amount of fluid.
@paulwary
@paulwary 2 года назад
So you're definitely meant to keep the car running after the correct temp is reached, when you remove drain plug again? It doesn't splash the oil around and release too much?
@GaryMarkowski
@GaryMarkowski 2 года назад
@@paulwary When the engine is running, the pump in the transmission is pushing the fluid up, and there is less fluid in the bottom of the pan. Yes, it is important that the engine is running when you remove the plug and when you reinsert the plug. Once the plug is back in place you can then turn off the engine. If you remove the plug when the engine is off, then too much fluid will come out and you will need to refill and retest.

Can you leave the 8mm drain plug in while gravity does its job refilling the transmission reducing the amount of waste?
@tonyd3266
@tonyd3266 6 лет назад
I think the overfill method is healthier for trans, as it washes away and flushes away more residue. its like doing an oil change and pouring a clean quart in with the drain plug out -- kinda flushes out a little more gunk and leaves clean residual oil instead of dirty. Never seen a car-change video doing the extra quart method on engine oil - but it makes sense with the price of these motors, smaller and closer tolerance bearings, and having 4 and 5 valves with over 50 hp per cylinder cylinder these days. think about the advanced additives VW has in oil -- spec 507 ! its not a complete waste of oils I hope.

I wouldn't chance it--the DSG's are great but temperamental. The Ancel VD700 (its an entry level VAG scan tool) scan tool will read trans temp. ($100) on amazon. I would go with that. Otherwise, the measure method would be fine as well. Generally, about 4.7 L will drain out--when the car is level. ALSO, check for LEAKS: 1. On top of the DSG around the DSG oil cooler. There are two o-rings that are inserted and mount the oil cooler to the DSG. Those can go bad if the car is getting old (pt # WHT008226). 2. At the loom plug connection. If you see DSG fluid in the loom plug connection or on the wires, there are two o-rings that can go bad (pt # WHT001406). You'll have to remove the DSG oil pan to get to them. 3. The DSG oil pan gasket can also deteriorate (pt # 02E321371E), so check around the gasket the best you can. How do I know....please don't ask =(

Is it a Golf your changing on? I have inspekted my Passat 2010 and i cant find any drainedge och refilling and when i call VW they just say that it´s nothing you can do your self, and the whant like 250-300 dollers for a fluid change.. and why ive been checking is because ive got this popcorn like sound in my gearbox. but only in P and N. Not when i put it in R, D och S. Any Ideá what it could be!? Sorry for my bad spelling..

Bengt Bang Actually, dealer will tell you the same thing regardless what car you drive. i got myself a vw...i know nothing about germany cars but engine principles works the same all car brand. One of my coil broke, i simply just bought one coil. i let the engine run while i disconnect one coil plug at a time. i found which coil was faulty. replaced it myself 18.00 dollars. dealer wanted 260. just 10 mins of your time. wanted to charge me 300 for labor only to change cv axles. i did it myself easy. just disconnect ball joint, lower. there are so many things that dealer wont tell you, and charging you recklessly!!! This video is amazing. thanks!

+Sam Olsen The only thing I HAVE to buy from a dealer is wiper blades. $55...I bet they'd charge $269 to install them.

You can use OBDeleven to get DSG fluid temperature, which is less expensive than VagCom.

You explained that VW tech whom has done 100 DSG fluid changes used 4.5L of fluid (with diagram and whatnot) and then you go on and say to add 5.5L? So which is it 4.5 or 5.5L? Do I buy 5L or 6L? Also, forcing fluid into transmission using compressed air? there must be a pressure relief valve on the transmission I assume or else you might blow seals couldn't you compromise the pressure relief valve if you use too much air pressure? You also talked about measuring the drained fluid and replacing with same amount, what about the fluid in the old filter how do you measure that not to mention the spilled fluid?
@RobinGWakker
@RobinGWakker 5 лет назад
I agree with what you described. The video has it wrong, its confusing to say 4.5 and then 5.5. The VW Workshop manual on the DSG 02e mentions to fill 5 liters and then drain after the gear box has reached 35 to 45 celcius, of course having cycled each gear. Im actually to do this job myself first time this week, so hopefully it works well.

wow, we charge $275 at the dealer I work at and I thought that was high. Guess we are reasonable. But changing it without reading the value block showing the temp of the fluid is not advisable. The stand pipe is an accurate way to fill the the transmission used in conjunction with the vas software. Put the plug back in when the stream just begins to break, waiting till a drip is too long IMO, it will be perfectly filled at that point. It's not an exact science but it's the factory approved way.

How much is the DSG Fluid and Filter to buy? Who makes the best fluid?
@tonyd3266
@tonyd3266 6 лет назад
get dealer DSG. viscosity tests show HUGE differences in aftermarket DCG brands and some lead to premature wear. DSG is really like a wet motorcyle clutch manual shift with a robot shifting the gears. very efficient cuts on gears and handles mega torque well.

wow, they've really complicated this. why not just do it the normal way, fill hole level at max on the side?

I bought another drain plug and made my own fill tool today.. then watched this and realized you can just fill the new fluid (maybe slowly) into where the filter goes on top while it is removed, then install the new filter after you put 4.5L of new fluid in. ... I hate this 'german engineering'
@markkay8117
@markkay8117 4 года назад
Exactly, another thing why whey didn't add another re-fill plug on top of the gearbox, just like normal manual gearbox has. This "engineering" is getting worse and worse.....
