I hardly ever push like on videos, nor do I log on my account to comment on 'em. First off, I'm a novice at the guitar. And by that I mean.... I've hardly ever played chords. I came home from work, and decided to pick up the guitar. And well, it went pretty poorly. So I decided to surf on by youtube, and I came across your video: and it truly saved my day. Instead of putting away the guitar, I'm actually sitting here - strumming like a madman. Never thought that would happen, so I would like to direct some gratitude and appreciation towards you. Thanks a lot for the video, I really like the way you teach on how to play the guitar. This gave me the inspiration to pick up and keep up the progress on my playing.

This is one of the best learning vids ,I've come across on RU-vid.. I'm 40+ years young and have just started learning to play guitar.... I was 12.30 untill I saw your film , I'll now practice more on the chords then the strumming.. Thanks.. Sean.

When I watched this guy's teaching method here the only thing I could say was, "Hey, this guy's good". I will be paying more attention to him. I'm 58 and playing a guitar is on my bucket list. I'm a beginner by far but after watching this video I gained a lot more confidence that I can play a guitar.

I appreciate this kind of lessons. Putting it easier for the beginners, whose should focus on tempo and feelings more than basic techniques. What I mean is that you should spend your time feeling the music rather than thinking where to put your fingers.

Sir, I truly appreciate your clarity and simple way you taught this lesson. I have tried playing guitar off and on for 35 years and always struggled at switching between chord cleanly. Your breaking down "common mistakes" and switching between 2 chords using whole notes instead of 4 beats, is a very good bit of advice. Adding the common finger/note tip is also very good. Thanks for your posting of this.

You Rock, man. I just purchased your guitar music theory, Level 1. I am a beginner & so excited to study this and learn the fretboard while practicing technique. I learned to play piano as a child, but only to read music. I was never taught theory and that is a BIG reason why I am learning guitar. If I can understand theory on guitar, I believe I can easily translate to piano and truly play (piano & guitar) from my soul :). I am 55 and was away from the piano for 40 yrs. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE!!!

Nick, i consider you the best teacher. I asked you a question about changing from B to B7 open chord and you answered with no easy way except barre. Thanks, It gave me a kick in the butt. I have been practising daily since on open and can now do it . I think you know every trick known on guitar. I had to learn it as Martina McBride sings just one more so darn well and it only sounds good to me in open . Ya shouda told me get off my butt and do it ha ha. I am 70 years old and learning (trying) to learn.

Hi Secret Guitar Teacher, I'm not one of the younger beginners to learning guitar and I am finding it hard to change chords as my fingers just don't seem to want to do anything but go side by side after moving off a chord, but I do find your lesson very thorough and I really appreciate your knowledge. One day, I hope to make progress so I can play a tune all the way through, so I will keep watching your lessons, all the best.

Nick, thank you very much for this video and for beginner like me, this is a gem. You specified that too much strumming is detrimental in gaining the speed needed to change chords and I can attest to that. In addition, it is very demoralizing to spend all that time practicing with no proof of valuable lessons learned. Your theory of doing less ( strumming ) will actually speed up learning the dreaded chord changes by following your instruction is priceless. I know I will be taking some of your courses once I get out of this hump and build the confidence not to quit. All for now. Rolando

Thank you very much for this great tutorial. I understand perfectly the need to switch between chords and I was placing too much focus on the chords themselves. Still not there, but better than ever, now. Thank you!

The dominant 7th is used to create "tension", which is then resolved back to the G major. It can be played as a D major, but D7 just sounds better. If you need to work on your D chord, go ahead and do that, it will work just the same, there's no need to stick rigidly to this progression. 7ths are often substituted for major chords, and it's fine to play either. You'll know if it sounds right just by listening. Happy learning.
