Can the thermostat that’s inside the housing be replaced on its own?

We do not have such information, we recommend that you consult your mechanic

The housing is prone to crack so even if you got it out you shouldnt do that.

No, this is 1.6 petrol. 1.9tdi thermostat is in plastic housing on engine block behind where alternator is.
