At 16:55 when Bryan explains checking the transmission fluid level, he meant to say "fill plug" rather than "drain plug." You will use the fill plug to both fill and check the level. DON'T take out the "drain plug" after adding fluid or it will all pour out on the ground lol.
Hey bro question i have a bmw x5 e70 2012 n55 engine with 119k miles i bought a transmission fluid kit from fcp euro i want to know if is safe to change the fluid or is too late now i call the bmw dealer and they told me is not recommended what are your thoughts the car shifts perfect with no problems ?
Hey Justin, how many miles did your 340i have when you decided to change all the fluids out? I have an '18 230i with 45K miles, when do you recommend I change mine? I drive about 5k miles a year. Thank you and love your vids!
I love your videos man don’t ever stop please 😂 convinced me to get a 340i and I did! 5 months of ownership and I still binge your videos from time to time. Many thanks from Vancouver Canada!
Man I'd pay good good money if someone like Bryan can do all of this to my F30😢 Extremely hard to find someone like him in the UK, they all seem to treat your car like shit lol But another fantastic video and the quality just seems to get better and better ❤
This is why I decided to service. Here in the UK I had work done on my bmw and the mechanic didn't bother putting the cover screws back on one side for the bottom of the engine. I know there's a million screws but I paid good money lol
@@Aqdas.. That's annoying. If they couldn't even put the covers back properly, makes you wonder about the quality of the rest of the work they performed.
Just came across your videos. I just bought a 2012 F10. A lot of what you do is the same for mine. Great info, man. First BMW for me. Loving it so far.
Great job to you and Brian this is awesome stuff especially the way you record and explain things it makes everything much easier and I am pretty sure many people are going to find this helpful
Been following your channel since the beginning and it’s still one of my favorites. Clean, informative and relaxing. Love the new 3 series, enjoy and keep up the good work @Justin!
Hey guys, just bought a M240i used, first registered Jun 2019. And it also has the B58 engine in, with the same setup for coolant reservoirs as you have. The main engine coolant reservoir was a little low on coolant so i got some from BMW yesterday (green for 2019 on) and a syringe and tubing to sample the reservoir since i could not actually tell if the coolant in there looked the same (some folks will use non BMW stuff, so best to check before adding). The coolant in the main engine reservoir was yellow, so not the green coolant BMW stated is used in B58s from 2019 on. It is clear and clean looking with no residues or particles evident (good news as i believe if there was oil from engine or transmision it would not be, similarly if there was a rust problem) and interestingly if you pass light through it at right angles to viewing direction it is bright green like the proper coolant. Would you say this colour change can happen to coolant over time where it will change colour like this? And also, being as the reservoir for the intercooler (smaller reservoir) contained green coloured coolant and was at the correct level, i assume the two systems are completely independent of one another, am i correct?
Before filling differential oil, we need to shake the oil bottle to mix everything evenly inside. Otherwise, friction adjustment will differ, and it ends up chattering
I never seen justin doing something that I don’t agree with ‘ this guy is in top of his game ; these are the best products you can get to make your car live longer
Awesome video Justin, the crazy part about this project is it will be obsolete in a few years with EVs. This will truly only be a passion project in the near future. We are in a sea change environment in the auto industry.
Thanks! You are right, but I think that as that change happens, a lot of people are going to cling to their ICE vehicles, and will keep them running at all costs. We are in the last generation of cars that the average person can work on themselves 😢
Kinda unfair using the coolant filling machine. As many ppl doesn’t hav this expensive tool and want to do it the diy way. Show us how to do it without that machine
if i am not mistaken from the other videos i have seen you just open the air bleed off valve on your coolant turn you car on but not full set the temperature to high and fan to low then bump on the gas pedal for about 10 seconds or so
Some job need extra or special tool to do it properly. Example good torque wrench. Modern cooling system due to very high efficiency heat exchanger using micro channel is best to use vacuum type refill kit to avoid small stubborn air bubbles pocket. At say 25 inch hg vacuum mentioned in this video, it is equal to as though as we are filling coolant at 12.5 psi positive pressure, but in the form of suction.
You can try leaving the coolant cap off overnight. This will generally release all the air bubbles in the system. I used to do this on my e34 and e39 and it worked everytime.
Amazing video, thanks guys. I've just bought a bmw 1 series 2.0 118d sport 5dr 2013(bag's of fun) your video is very informative. Appreciate your time 👍🏼👌
In about 1000 miles im due for a oil change. So for my 2014 228i RWD Coupe, I ordered 5w30 Schaeffer's Advanced European Performance. The BMW dealership said originally the weight was 5w30, but changed it to 0w30. I said screw it im gonna keep it 5w30. Schaeffer's been around since 1839.
Hey Justin! I saw you at the Woodward dream cruise! I was in my black e90, a 2011 328xi. I tried to message you off my moms instagram because I don’t have it. I was driving one lane over and you were 1 car length ahead of me for almost 5 minutes! Your videos are super helpful getting to know my car. I turned 16 beginning of august so it’s my first car, and the first car I personally bought!
I have learned so much from you. Started watching you when I was 20 now I am 27 and I just recently bought a BMW and started working on the car doing maintenance 🫶
Really great videos, I love all of your content. And this is very good as a walkthrough, even for us who is used to mechanical work. Just easier to be prepared with tools etc, instead of going out to check what I need. I love how meticulously you are doing it. But as a request, please use gloves. Hands is really hard noticing it but I’ve had oil splashing other parts, like legs. It’s not many minutes before the oil actually gets absorbed into the skin. I lost a grandfather because of cleaning and rebuilding engines with hands in diesel and kerosene and oil all day long. So please stay safe and make more good work👌🏽
@@justinbuice ❤️ I’m so happy to hear that. You make a really great material. You deserve a long life after work also. That’s how I’m trying to see it, why work so hard if we don’t live to experience the retirement and some vacation You definitely earned me as a subscriber for life Have a great spring prepping cars for summer season 👌🏽
BMW factories use ZF 8hp fluid in their transmission. You have added luqui molly which differs from ZF. BMW warns that mixing a different fluid can cause damage to the transmission. That’s why I ordered ZF. What do you think about that? Because couple litres old oil was left in transmissions anyway.
Great video. Thanks. Very helpful. Question about the coolant - what if you don’t have a pressure bleeder? Is it the typical ‘leave the cap off and let the car idle for 15 minutes so it can believe itself’?
I just got a 2024 530i, also factory filled with 0w20. I felt it was a bit to thon. I asked the BMW dealer, and the service dept. they told me tgat they use 0w30 after 60k to 70k high mialeage. However I could request to use 0w30 on my next pil change and they would no prob. They said the ow30 provides more protection, , but the 0w20 is for better fuel economy. Then I asked if I could use 5w30, and they said I could, and they have it, but 0w30 flows better. I'm in Miami. Not sure where you guys are at, perhaps the extreme heat we have here , BMW has different fill options. I personally prefer the 0w30
Dude this is what RU-vid car scene is missing. ALL IN ONE. Next can you show some other topic? Like checking for parasitic battery drain or diagnosing/fixing electrical stuff like sunroof with a mind of its own or comfort access not working, replacing stuff like handles, clips, fenders etc would be very helpful.
Question about doing the transmission pan. Why are we cleaning the mating surfaces on the transmission of fluid with a microfiber cloth.. if we are then putting some transmission fluid on the new gasket to lubricate it? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of cleaning that off in the first place?
@justinbuice For the coolant change there was some editing. Right after you empty the system and have full vacuum, the inlet hose was empty. Then video cut to next step with inlet hose full before filling new coolant into system. It looks like you skipped a step. If you don’t have that inlet line full of coolant you’ll be injecting the air that’s in the line into the system. How did you fill the inlet line first?
Dealer starting to see oil pump failures on b58… tech said ALWAYS use oem bmw filter because common thread on failures seems to be aftermarket filters that may starve oil or be too much drag on flow…
Do you add the exact same coolant to both cold and hot fill sections? And do you go to the max or go for the middle of min and max fill? Love the videos very helpful!
Great video as always. What would you estimate was the cost to replace all the fluids? I see the transmission pan and tools probably added around $5-600+ . So maybe around $1000 total to get all these changed out?
I have to add it all up, but $1,000 sounds very close. Keep in mind that most people will re-use the stock transmission pan which would be a big savings.
Awesome video. Been looking at 340is for the past year and the plan is to get on in December. Any comments about what tools I should start to accumulate? This will be my first real project car and I’m not sure what I need!!
Hey! At the very least you will need metric sockets, a set of both Torx and E Torx sockets, a torque wrench, and some sort of software that can interface with the car’s computers. A set of interior pry tools will be helpful too. I personally use BimmerGeeks ProTool which is an app you can get for android devices. I got a cheap tablet from walmart just to run ProTool. You will need this or something like it if you ever replace the battery. It can also show live parameters like how we were able to check the transmission temp in the video. You can also use it for programming if you change any of the electronics inside the car. For example i Installed a digital gauge cluster a few months ago and used ProTool to program it to the car. I also use an app called Carly which doesn’t have quite as many features, but it’s more convenient for me to use on the go since it works with iPhone.
After watching/reading various how tos regarding the transmission refill, apparently, after carrying out the procedure in the video one should either add 0.5 ltr extra of oil, or, run the transmission until the transmission cooler opens (75°C), then let the trans cool back down to 40°C, and recheck level. Obviously this depends on whether or not a cooler is fitted.
We were following the service PDF from ZF. After shooting this, we test drover the car, let the transmission cool down to 40C, took out the fill plug, and there was still a steady stream of fluid coming out.
@@justinbuice That's good to know as I will be doing mine tomorrow (hence me being here, thought one more vid couldn't hurt lol) now I can skip that bit. I will be changing the Mechatronic sealing sleeve whilst I'm in there, again 'apparently' they can be prone to leaking. Thanks for a great vid.
When discussing the transmission fill process, (between 16:50-17:10) did he mean to say Fill Plug rather than Drain Plug? If you run the engine until the trans fluid reaches 40C, then remove the Drain Plug to check the level, all the fluid will start draining out!
I have a 2017 430 and bought some blue coolant because I got a warning light on for low. However I'm aware that they started using green coolant so if the dealership topped off my blue coolant with green coolant would I need to use green or blue to top off? I read that you can use green in blue but not blue in green so I'm a little confused if I should add blue or green even though the car originally came with blue. I just topped off with some water for the time being.
Thank you for the amazing instructions!! How often should coolant be flushed? Dealership said 100k miles lifetime fluid. How often should engine oil be changed? Dealership said every 10k miles.
Excelente video y pocos te explican que debes de cambiar el aceite del diferencial y la transmisión y me podrías ayudar cada cuantas millas se debe revisar o cada que tiempo se debe hacer el cambio
Doesn't pulling a vacuum tend to crush in some parts like radiators? If we suck the air out of a thin metal can, it will crush in... I'd hate to see a radiator deform itself same way..
Would the transmission oil swap be the same procedure on a manual? Would you need to start the car and move through the gears and top up a second time like here? Is that step absolutely necessary ?
There should be a class action lawsuit against BMW (& other manufacturers) for saying that the transmission fluid doesn’t get changed because that’s total crap (like my transmission). My 2009 BMW 1 series 128i convertible has transmission issues and only 116k miles. The previous owner never changed the fluid per BMW and now it shudders in 4th & 5th gears when I drive it in full automatic mode. If I manually shift it drives fine with no shudder. If there has been a schedule to change the fluid and the previous owner had it done this most likely wouldn’t be a problem. Now I’m screwed with a transmission that is not going to last very long. It’s a crime to not have a schedule to maintain it. I read up on this and found that there is no coolant flush, or trans flush, or diff flush or fuel filter that is scheduled by BMW. That’s criminal on the part of BMW. No wonder BMWs have so many issues. I’m sick of auto makers misinforming customers on these maintenance issues. BMW should be forced to either replace transmissions that have issues like mine or replace the entire car. Won’t ever buy another BMW ever again. Oh and good luck selling my car without replacing the transmission!
Question my 2007 328i just had the brake fluid light come on but it’s full, does this mean it has to be flushed and replaced. Also would it stop squeaking when I brake or is that brake pads ?
Hi Justin, My F34 ,b48 engine is mixing oil with coolant in water reservoir. I have replaced oil filter housing but is still mixing. Could it be transmission cooler?
Why is no one in the comments talking about how you update the idrive? It’s as important as the actual maintenance to me. I don’t like to see 0000 as the dealercode in the system. It screams “do not buy”
Hey Justin, thanks for another great video! I'm about to service the transmission of my 2018 BMW M240i X-drive and I bought a ZF pan & filter with 7 Liters of Liqui Moly Top Tec 1800 ATF. But now I'm hesitant to go with Liqui Moly because there will be about 2 liters of the factory ZF fluid left behind and I'm concerned about mixing them. Am I correct in assuming this is what you did and if so, have you noticed any changes in the performance of the transmission?
@justine, thank you for this video, well presented. Please, I have a question, @3:31 after the engine oil, Cebatec was added. What is the purpose of adding Cebatec?
Hey guys do you think the transmission service only can be done in a garage with jacks and stands without a lift? It’s pretty involved but I wanted to swap out the transmission pan and I’m due for a fluid change also Ty
@@kevin-jm3qbsorry I was half asleep when I replied to this 😅😂. Kies has a video installing the CSF manifold on a B58 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TaI-oxsM3ao.htmlsi=P2SP_bZk9giRvbn5 still not sure how it compares to the others, but this is a great DIY if you’re going to install yourself 😎
Great vibe on your video! Do you allow less oil total intake capacity for the Ceratec, meaning instead of adding let's say 7 quarts of oil, do you add 6.5 and the Ceratec for a total of 7?
Is it true that the only fluids that BMW officially recommends you service are the engine oil and the brake fluid? The others are supposedly "lifetime" fluids that don't require changing.
The word "lifetime" is a bit ambiguous and often confusing here. If we're talking the lifetime of a human, then they would last 80+ years. Lifetime of the car, maybe 15 years on average. What lifetime usually means though is the life of the factory warranty; 4 years or 50k miles. The truth is, every fluid in the car eventually breaks down and needs to be replaced. ZF, the manufacturer of the transmission officially recommends 50k mile intervals. For others like coolant, you can do chemical tests to determine when to change it.
