Why did you switch from FilterBalls to GLASS FILTER? Were you dissatisfied with the results? The FilterBalls website includes your video as a How-to in their product information section.

You turned your filter handle the wrong way. You went counter clockwise, instead of clockwise.

This should be the gold standard for all DIY youtube videos. Most certainly above par from what the majority of pool videos i have seen (ppl just talking about how to do it without showing you how to actually do it). Thank you so much for sharing your video.

Great video except for 2 things, first is you don't use teflon tape on unions, teflon is for pipe threads only. Second is you backwash first and then rinse. The rinse cycle is to push down the sand or balls after backwashing and also to clear out any debris floating on top of the media. Otherwise you made a great video.I enjoyed it.

Thanks for this comment. I have seen reviews that complained about filter balls allowing debris through the filter (like channeling tunnels that can occur with sand). I was wondering how to avoid this channeling. I bet the reviews with bad outcomes did not backwash then rinse properly which would help evenly distribute the balls. thx!

all good,,just a tip though,,always turn the valve control know 1 way,,either always clockwise or always anti-clockwise,,it will last longer!

Thank you! Switching over to the media balls this spring. Our pool cover got torn in half by a bad storm in the winter and our pool is green! I have never had this problem before, but I have read the filter balls do much better at algae filtering. Have a great summer! Are you still using the media balls?

Guessing you are not using marine grade sand & that is a must (that would explain the green guk). We just changed over to filter balls for the simple fact of weight & convience.

Does insulating the small amount of plumbing above ground make a significant difference? I figure the losses from the pool itself would completely eliminate any savings at the plumbing. I'd do it if it makes a difference, but I wouldn't want the added maintenance if it's negligible

The correct order is ALWAYS backwash FIRST, then rinse until clear. Never rise before backwashing.

I've been using filter balls for couple years & unfortunately I also didn't know the first time I should have put 1 bag of sand. Anyway, so far good....but I just want to be sure if anyone else have experienced little dirt/debris re-entering the pool after a backwash. I think maybe after I turn of my filter, maybe Im not allowing the backwash outlet to complete before I switch back to the filter setting. So maybe there still some dirt/debris that gets suck back into the filter. Anyone else have any ideals &/or have experience this also...lol??

rj does your pool have a push-pull or multi-port valve? Push-pull are notorious for the symptoms you describe above.

You put In a bag of sand and the cotton balls? I ask because I'm about to set up my pool. I bought a new sand filter as well as cotton balls. Just want to make sure I don't need sand as well. Thanks

The PVC parts are all purchased from Home Depot. None are flex. Mine have a little give.

I enjoyed this. Great description and procedure. I'm at the point of either a) buying an entire new filter b) replacing it with sand or c) using the filter balls. I just read some of the comments suggesting that 1lbs of sand should be used to hold the laterals down. Hmmmm....I'm unsure if I should make the jump.

I’m not sure why anyone would go with this method. Either switch to cartridge or physically clean the sand yearly and put up with efficiency losses while saving on maintenance.

Ankit j So my update is I didn’t go with the filter balls. I have lots of pine needles that end up in my pool. Pine needles render these balls useless. I went with Dr Dryden’s glass instead. The difference and filtering is remarkably incredible compared to sand. Incredible.

there are also other media on the market for filters like hollowed blocks made of plastic. Don't know how they work but propably does not need handwashing.

@@U2BROTHR Do you only use Activate Glass, or do you use Enhance Summer UV liquid in conjuction? Does Activate Glass filter better than sand?

@@ManOfAllCreation Thank you for reaching out. I ONLY use Activate Glass with CYA. I live in Canada and I have never found Enhance Summer UV liquid anywhere. My guess is this liquid acts the same as CYA. I am going to say YES! Activate Glass does filter better than sand.

I have a Sand Hayward s244t. How has your luck been with the laterals? I've heard you line the bottom with pea gravel if the laterals don't sit fully on the bottom. I did the filter balls and every lateral snapped off when I went to check it. Didn't even last 6 months and now I have to purchase new laterals.

The problem I have had with the laterals is when the filer ball media clogs them up. I guess that’s why you put the pea gravel at the bottom (first time hearing about that), to try to prevent that. Terrible about them snapping off. 👎 Maintaining a pool is a lot of work.

I had the same issue. They didn't snap but they all bent (and they were one year old). Also backwashing with the balls is useless and I have to wash thoroughly (I even put them in the washer/dryer when closing the pool). When I check again the filter balls page on the website I bought them from, they have added a note : Is it recommended that you still add some sand (approx. 1 bag) to the bottom of your filter tank, prior to adding Filtra Balls, in order to support the filter laterals. Damn.. However, last year, I didn't replace the bent laterals and it worked fine ! But... an other surprise was waiting for me last autumn : the sand filter drain screen broke and also the plastic at the bottom that retains the laterals assembly in place. I don't know if this has something to do with the balls or not...The sand filter is quite old.

@@twidledrum36 Unfortunately there is significant market confusion. Filtra Balls are not FilterBalls; a very different product. If you are using Filtra Balls, that is a Chinese product, they are almost always white (though they have started making a blue), and yes they state to remove them from the housing to hand wash. .. Stories I am aware of are housings actually failing because of the Chinese product. If you have questions we can be contacted by finding us on the web... one word FilterBalls, Made in the USA.

@@SophiaSaysDIY ... the only way laterals can bend is if the internal pressure is beyond the manufacturers recommended pressure or flow, creating a significant down force. A pool is a hydraulic system and the system needs to be working within specifications for it to function and operate properly.

I think one step was not done. Before replacing the FilterBalls (Or sand), water should be poured into the filter first.

@@SophiaSaysDIY Hmmm, I've been considering changing the sand in my filter but as to backwashing, you need to backwash to get freshwater to the pool if Chlorine is used. So it is a must. Any comment pls

This is a terrible idea why not just fill the canister with rolls of toilet paper or T shirts. The reason sand is used is because it won't clog like a filter will.

did you try a shop vac to remove the sand? funny after watching more of the video you did say a shop vac would have been easier, btw, I have no pool. I see a second set of hands. I was hoping you were single, lol. what no cameo?
