Developing your own skills and your own judgment is so true. When I was first starting to drive with my mom we were at an intersection. I had right of way but there was a cyclist on my right. I thought they were coming quite fast so I waited for them. My mom was like what are you doing? Why didn't you go? Well I didn't feel comfortable going so I didn't go. In retrospect I had plenty of time but I don't regret my decision because it was a learning moment. Then a couple weeks later I'm trying to turn left but there's a car in the opposite lane so I should give way (driving on the right here). But I noticed the car was mid turn and still pretty far away. I made a quick turn and it felt comfortable. But my mom was freaking out saying I shouldn't have gone. Looking back I still think it was safe so no regrets since I didn't rush the decision.

I really enjoy learning from your videos as you always have helpful visuals and show learners what to do. I've practiced driving on the road for about 20hrs now but I still find changing lanes really scary. I usually take my foot off the break, look for too long and/or drift into a different lane cos my arms turn when I check my blindspot (sometimes onto the other side of the road) so I don't have much confidence in my driving ability. Could you also make a video where you're changing lanes on a main road (not a motorway or freeway)? I get even more anxious because the speed limit is usually 60km/h on these roads but the cars are much closer together so I don't know how to judge when it's a safe distance to overtake. I can be quite jerky with my wheel because of this :(

You must put so much time into editing and making these videos, I’m super grateful, like you being sat there with a head cam shows so much more of what’s going on in the mirrors. I find it hard when my instructor says on roundabouts ‘check your mirrors’ because I struggle to know what I’m checking for if that makes sense? Where should or shouldn’t there be a car for me to come off the roundabout, so if you have any advice on what to check for on roundabouts with mirrors and timing for leaving it would be much appreciated. I’ve so many times on lessons went to change to leave and I thought it was clear then my instructor grabs the wheel -___- thanks again for you hard work!!
@alicepeachcake8825

I'm guessing maybe your instructor meant you didn't look further enough ( at round about) ( basically not just someone from your right, but also someone from your opposite way as they may turn right so would be right in front of you)? Things can change so fast Within just half second! Next time you could ask your instructor what you had missed, and always ask for rewatching the dashcam of of lesson ( my instructor was a star!), that could make explanation much clearer!
@alicepeachcake8825
@alicepeachcake8825 4 года назад
Also to catch the perfect perfect timing for leaving the round about, always get yourself perfectly ready to go ( if in manual car), right foot slightly squeeze on gas , left foot just a little bit below biting point ( if manual petrol car) or much more below biting point ( if manual diesel cadi. When you get your chance, lift your left foot up to biting point, there you go. otherwise you will take at least get biting point + gas ready, you'll miss your chance as things change so fast even Within just half second!

Maybe a silly question, but would exactly the same judgements based on what you see in your rear and side mirror apply in the same way on a much slower road than the motorway, such as a 30 mph road? I did pass my test in November, and I've changed lane thousands of times!... But someone did sideswipe me at a junction nearly 2 months ago, and I developed a bit of fear about driving. First, it was give ways and junctions I was scared of (that was the sort of place I was when the accident happened), but I've got more and more comfortable with joining roads and doing junctions again. It feels like now that fear has transferred into being anxious about changing lanes! I take a new route to work now because of roadworks, and this other route has a few lane change moments in it 😬
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 года назад
It is the same judgement. Don't be afraid to change lane when someone is behind you as long as they're not too close or approaching you quickly. The centre mirror is best for judging distance. Try and keep driving and accept things may go wrong, if you worry about it you will drive like you're treading on eggshells which will lead to indecision which can be dangerous in itself. If you drive sensibly you will likely be fine.
@xMcMurderface

@@ConquerDriving Thank you for taking the time to reply. I definitely agree that hesitation itself could cause problems. Would you argue that in a way blindspots can sort of go on a dualcarriageway.. you only have 2 lanes to worry about, check your mirrors periodically and then you can sort of visualise where cars are. Cars don't just disappear, if you have had a car behind you in right lane and you look again in your side mirror and it's just gone.. then obviously it is there but in your blindspot.. Do you, in normal driving (not test standard driving) check blindspots? I should get into a habit of side window looking, especially in 3 lane scenarios.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 4 года назад
I would not trust myself to always know exactly what's around me without checking. I did spill boiling water on myself this evening... We humans are far from reliable, so it's best to check to keep yourself covered. A sideways glance is definitely not good enough with two lanes next to you, I have seen cars hiding two lanes away in my blind spot many times, it's OK if they don't change lane but they may.

@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 4 года назад
I would have to see the roundabout but, having an ahead arrow doesn't normally mean much as it is there to encourage people to go the correct way around the roundabout for than anything. If it's to the right you will most likely need the right lane but without seeing it I won't know. Sorry.

Sorry mate but most saloon type cars can't be seen in the blind spot bigger the car your driving the bigger the blind spot, but yeah always look over your shoulder. Nice to see you use the whole slip road to get your speed up.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 4 года назад
I normally have my speed up long before the end of the slip road. I like an excuse to accelerate quickly and a slip road is a good excuse. Using the end of the slip road is to help others on the main road have time.

How much do you have to turn your steering wheel while changing lanes .
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving Год назад
You should never be thinking about how much to steer, if you are then you are not steering properly. Look where you want to go and steer enough so that you get there. This video may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MXUn-EYPpkA.html

if a person gives you way when you are wanting to change lanes is that a fail?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving Год назад
It can be, depends if it's busy. If you need to change lane then you can ask with the signal but if it's easy to let the car pass you then change lane without inconveniencing them, then you should. The signal should only be used as a request when it's busier enough to justify this.

Make sure you focus ahead more than in your mirrors. Mirror checks should be brief and frequent when changing lane.

Hey man, I really, really appreciate these videos. I'm 31 years old and have a terrible anxiety disorder. I did some lessons when I was 18 but my anxiety got so bad I couldn't leave the house for well over a decade. Anyway, I'm really hoping to save up a little cash, do my theory and practical and buy a car. These videos have been invaluable to me. Thanks for using the headcam too - very helpful :D Big thumbs up to you amigo, both on RU-vid and in real life lol :)

In Australia we are taught to ALWAYS check your blind spot before you change lanes, no matter what - mirror checks aren’t enough and if you failed to head check that would be marked as a fault. Mirrors just don’t show you everything and it only takes a half-second to check your blind spot as well.

Love that you include a learners perspective of trying out new things and it is true, that getting anxious and overwhelmed because of an unfamiliar road or area that you've never driven on before is true. Especially when you have your attention diverted to a small little thing and you don't concentrate on driving is a bad habit for me and I've learned so much from your channel. Please keep up!!

Some people learn quicker than the other which is true and positive thinking helps a lot, but I found very hard to feel confident enough to drive after completing a lot of lessons and I feel like I worry more than focusing what I could achieve. Whenever I watch your vidios, it really builds my confidence, thank you so much for your time and support, you are so good.
