Changing the oil on a Chevrolet Corvair is a little different than a regular old car oil change. Join me as I change the oil on a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair.
I show the tools I use, and go through the process step by step.
I also show tips and tricks and common simple errors that a person could make when changing oil on their Corvair.
I explain the process so you can change your own Corvair safely and successfully.

This takes me back to the good old days. My first car was a 64 Corvair . I can see this car has been converted from a generator to alternator . Great video.

Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed. Yes, I upgraded that to internally regulated alternator for the customer. I usually do that on my Corvairs, especially the early ones. That car is coming back today because it's been a year and it's time for another oil change and another pre season check over. Great car, great owners, always a pleasure to look after. Thanks for watching.

Wow, what a complicated oil change! When I was a kid working in a gas station, we did a lot of Corvair oil changes! We didn’t know what a torque wrench was and NEVER had any kind of a problem! We just used good old Common Sense!
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 2 года назад
Common sense isn't that common these days. I used to just hand tighten everything and snug it up if it leaked, but if you want to follow the manual, there's a torque spec for everything.
@JoeBob1955

When I had a Corvair (40+ years ago) I just used whatever oil was on sale and met new car requirements. My book (the blue cover Floyd Clymer book), if memory serves, only gave torque specs for the head bolts! Never had any problems related to oil changes.
@PhilipLeitch
@PhilipLeitch Месяц назад
Torque servers two purposes: 1 it applies tendon to the bolt applied to the surface. This isn't simply "pushing down" but actual clamping (as the bolt is literally stretched). 2. Ensures the bolt doesn't over clamp, destroying gaskets, stripping threads or breaking bolt heads. It's the balance between the two that engineers of these engines determined through material analysis and testing. Trust the people who made the engine and not how it feels.

Great video! There is absolutely nothing wrong with being extra precautious while performing even just an oil change. If torque specifications were not important, they wouldn't be in the manual. Those who ridicule your procedures probably have 35lbs of pressure in there front tires 😂

I have had 3 corvairs in the past. A 63, 66, and 69 and they are about the easiest vehicles to change oil as the filter and oil pan screw are easily accessible. I also used a plastic bag to hold oil filter after the first time oil change as it avoids any spilled oil from getting into engine compartment. Good tip.

The '63 looks good with the two tone paint. The 145s are good engines, and the 164s are pretty amazing for their displacement.

Amazing the number of commenters who feel the need for picking on a careful mechanic. Why does it make these people feel good to say there is no need for attention to detail? - just slop it together! You can get away with being sloppy until that one time when it goes bad.
@SlowCarFix

Love this comment. I try to do the best I can at everything I do. I couldn't believe that some thought I checked the oil too much, and why wouldn't I just fill and forget it. It takes 2 seconds to check the oil and be sure you know what you have. I hope this video is helpful for some that don't know this stuff, and Corvair's are just a bit different. Thanks for watching and commenting.

You mentioned that you most often change based on time not mileage. Could you explain why that is important? Thank you.
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 5 месяцев назад
I usually change on time because most here in Canada only put on a few thousand miles a year, and often the oil has reached it's recommended life span in the engine. Most oil manufacturers recommend 5000miles/ 3 months. I am no expert on why that is, but I know it begins to deteriorate and lose viscosity over time. Usually it's once a season on my Corvairs. I hope that helps answer your question.

What is the best way when using a floor Jack , to Jack up the rear of a Corvair? I suppose not under any of the drive train units.
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 2 года назад
Not from the drive train. In the rear there's a triangular spot on each side between the pinch welds, in front of the wheel well. I usually use some wood and straddle those pinch welds over that triangular area. However the triangular area is the jack point.

Does anyone recommend the larger oil pan for desert climate?
@SlowCarFix

I don't know about for desert climate, but I've run them before to help solve leaks. The aluminum pans are very good for sealing.

It was around 1970 and my step fathers niece was driving her corvair on US42 near Lexington Ohio and was rear-ended by a larger vehicle. They pulled over then the state hwy patrol came to get the info and she asked the officer if he thought her car was drivable to her home about 5 miles away. He looked at it and ( by now you know where this going,) said. Its just little mashed in but you should be OK. She made it a couple of miles the the oil filter was cracked and she burned up the engine as it pumped its own oil out ! That cross member broke the oil filter mount

Do you have any idea on how to replace the dipstick tube on 1964 CORVAIR ? The CORVAIR I purchased the dipstick is broken I think in half. My tube sticks up above the engine cover about 8 inches. So I’m not sure if the other half is in the tube or not. Any ideas ??? Thanks, Steve
@SlowCarFix

Sounds like you need to pull the cover and have a look.
@Steve-cs3tt

@@SlowCarFix so its that easy? Removing the top engine cover will give me excess to the dipstick tube bottom ? Again Thanks, Steve

@@SlowCarFix if the dipstick is broke will the part that has broken is it possible it could drop into the oil pan ??
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 5 дней назад
If you pull the fan shroud, you'll see where the dipstick tube enters the block. Worst case, if you pull off the blower housing, you can see in the block and see what's going on.

I noticed you didn't use the drain plug magnet to check for metal in the oil.
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 2 года назад
You're right, I didn't. It has a magnet on the plug. I did wipe it before I installed it, I always do. I just changed the oil again on this car the other day, it's been a year since this video. It's a really nice, great working car.
@Anthony-cc8bx

Do you use regular or synthetic? What do most people use?
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 2 года назад
That's a real preference and a big discussion amongst Corvair owners. This car's owner uses Amsoil ZROD synthetic with high zinc. Any modern quality oil with zinc is going to be far superior to any oil available in the 1960's. I also use Shell Rotella on some of my cars. I hope that helps. Either one of these is a good option. 👍

If ya know what you’re doing then torque is not important.Tighten by feel
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 2 года назад
I agree for the drain plug, but I disagree for the oil filter. I've been doing these for years and I never tighten them enough unless I use a torque wrench and then they always leak. It takes no extra time to torque it. Thanks for watching.

UNSAFE to bake the spare in the engine! NHTSA bans this practice!!
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 3 года назад
That's how they were built. That's the stock spare tire and jack location. I don't know what the NHTSA is, I'm in Canada. Chevrolet built 1.9 million of these cars and almost all of them had the spare tire in this location. Corvair wagons had them in the trunk, Corvair trucks had them behind the seat. All Corvair cars had them in the engine bay.

Over torque. Only one click, no more.
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 2 года назад
I disagree. I'm a certified millwright and electrician, have taken many courses in torquing. The torque wrench debate comes up often. It can click many times as long as it isn't turning further. It doesn't get tighter with each click, it's the same set point. We can respectfully agree to disagree though. Thanks for watching.
