Watched your video, bought a hub puller, and successfully replaced the blower motor in an AC unit in one of my rental properties. Saved myself about $1500. Thank you very much for posting this.

One five star plumbing company on Angi’s List who charged $85 to come out diagnosed our HVAC in our condo closet and came up with a few hundred dollars to fix but he said it may be eight weeks to get a new motor because of demand and Covid. Then on further inspection he said we needed to replace the whole unit and quoted $6,000! Our jaws were on the floor. We had our maintenance guy come up and look (wish I’d initially done this and saved the $85) and he said all you need to do is replace the motor. Everything else was fine. We called Grainger and bought a new fan motor and accessories which were immediately available; they walked us through it and it was a cinch. Only cost us just over $100. Your video really made a difference. Thanks.

I smelled burning smoke in the house when the fan turn on I thought it was the motor turned out blower motor was a ECM motor. Granger was $250 for the motor installed it and when tried to power it up the contactor was chattering. Replaced the contactor compressor turn on and shut off again the last time it smoked the new blower motor, and thermostat. AC guy came out checked the compressor it was shorted entire unit was trashed. Not only was I out the money for the blower I had to buy entire new unit $8800. My advice is get a good AC tech to do a full test on everything before buying parts. AC guy thinks the smoke was the electronics burning up smoke was being sucked inside the house.

A picture! Good idea. So far, i like this. Wasted like 2 hours watching unhelpful videos or they fast forward it. I dont want to wait 3 days for Maintenance to fix. Gonna try myself.

thank you! I took my time doing it. I'm not a tech nor have any idea of how everything in works in the a.c. system. regardless, I was able to replace my motor, get all the parts, install it back and it worked. I saved close to 700 dollars doing it myself. like you said some wiring is idiot proof.

I'm not an AC guy, but I'd like to add a couple of suggestions: 1. Please don't discharge the capacitor with the socket wrench like he shows you in the video. It could mess you up. Use a screwdriver instead. If you sit next to the attic opening, a little shock of electricity could throw you down to the floor. 2. Please wear gloves. You might get cut. There are so many sharp edges.

I'm an AC guy (an a/c girl, actually. lol) and I agree with your suggestions. Most socket wrenches I have seen don't have rubber handles like his, and carelessly clanking around the capacitor like he did, with a metal tool will give you that little "jolt" he is talking about. Using a screwdriver with a plastic or rubber handle, along with the gloves you should be wearing, will give you good protection. Lay the screwdriver across the two tabs so that they are touching the metal screwdriver at the same time. (they just have to touch for a moment. You may have a flash of electricity and a pop sound - but that is rare.) If you have a dual capacitor, just lay the screwdriver across two, and then pick it up and rotate it, making sure to get each group of tabs (you don't need to touch each individual tab). Also, I discharge them even when new in the box. Someone could have returned it before you purchased. I know I am overly cautious, but I avoid injury and damage to equipment.

not all blower motor need a puller, only the one rusted or stuck in the fan. Most just came out easily with bit of oil, after loosing the bolt.

I used silicone spray. Didn't hit rust until near the end of the shaft, took a little 400 grit emery paper to smooth the end of the shaft and the blower wheel came right off. The problem I'm having now is getting the belly band adjusted correctly. I had taken the old motor out without removing the bracket arms and tried to do the reverse to install the new. It's a bitch trying to true up the wheel in the housing. If I can't get it in the morning, I guess I'll take it all apart again and tighten the belly band first, then screw on the arms onto the housing, and save the set screw for last.

You don't need a hub puller what I always did was take a 4" grinder with a wire wheel remove all the rust on the shaft sticking out. Then I tamp the fan little more in remove any rust right there. Tiny amount of WD 40 put the fan over a bucket and one tap on the blower motor shaft entire motor will slide right out of the hub. The problem is the rust that builds up on the shaft when you try to pass that rusted shaft though the hub it gets jammed.

Hooking back up the way the original motor works fine unless you have a multispeed blower and you burn it up by not reading schematic

check your capacitor before u change it out.... if you have new unit and you don't smell a burn smell your motor probably still good.... a indoor fan motor need a good capactitor to start. change out your capacitor before u do this because they are design to last for 2 years at the most. that's how the HVAC industry work....

My heater was working fine but i heard some hard shaking and then the wheel stopped and smoke started coming out maybe from the Motor inside the spinning fan, i dusted it and cleaned a bunch of dust, it ran better but after 10 min i got that burn smoke coming out again from the motor. Do u think it maybe needs some Oil? Or a better cleaning?

SuperCool Slide Rule: Can I ask a question? I loved your video, watched it, gained my confidence, and I tried to do it myself. However, I have a Ruud too, yet it has the control board and many more wires connected to that fan frame. What do you do in that situation? Some of the wires are not just pull off and put back on; they are hard-connected to different pieces ... does that make sense? I wanted to save money, because I am a student and do DIY to save money. Yet, I am not sure how to work through the disconnection of all of that stuff. Is there a trick? Thanks, Poe

I priced out R&R my Blower Motor and Fan both Thru a HVAC contractor vs Doing it myself? $200 Difference! And They Know what their doing and have the right tools and Experience! The Fan is Key! It gets Very Dirty and can loose -50% Effecientcy! They cost the ave of $300+ for New One's !

SuperCool, can you please answer this: In a system where a furnace is in basement, blower located is first compartment, then heat, then cool compartment. lets says the air filter is next to blower, does it make a difference is fan faces the air filter or blower motor faces the filter?

Question: My Furnace is maybe 20 yrs old, how hard is it to find a motor that will match?
@keyroncampbell
@keyroncampbell 9 лет назад
just get a universal motor.... they usually $69.00 and that's if you have a HVAC licence.... you can find it online if you don't have a HVAC licence, I paid a tech $400 to replace my motor, that's before I took up HVAC at my local community college.... never again will I pay that.. and another tip... local hvac contractors over charge for services, I felt like paying $2100 for 3 HVAC classes was worth it then paying a company $1000 to replace a $12 part... it's all about sales and money when dealing with a contractor that has a huge marketing budget.

@CriticalElixer

main reason the motors go out to begin with is dirt accumulating on the fan blades and motor and not oiling the motor. the dirt on the fan blades will be up to a half inch thick and compressed air is not enough to clean it. it should be brushed and hosed and you often have to pick out the crud with a screw driver. This should be done every 3 years. the blower will also work much more efficiently afterwards

Hmmm...watched plenty of YT vids. regarding cleaning, repairing & replacing the blower motor &/or Blower capacitor in which the capacitor is easily visible on the blower fan housing yet on my Blower housing I don't see a capacitor & I doubt it's in where the motor & fin wheel are located....any thoughts? Thanks for the video.

meonetallguy Did you have a module ECM on your motor like ours? Then your capacitor would be internal.

Hello, I changed out my blower motor, but when I retired it and turned it on both the heater and ac unit kick on. I pulled the breaker to the heater to get through the winter. Now it’s summer I moved the thermostat to cool and the blower kicks on but not the unit outside. I moved the thermostat back to heat and the unit outside kicks on but no blower. I know I have wired something improperly. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

If you have a 4 speed motor like mine, there is a possibility your control board is not putting out voltage to your high speed connector or you may have a loose connection at your board. Can check for voltage as soon as your furnace calls for the blower to come in which is a short while after the burners have been on.

I am very sorry for the late reply. The only way to accomplish this is with a 220 volt to 110 volt transformer with a v.a. rating that is 30% larger than the amp rating of the fan motort

Never recommended cleaning fins if needed. Should not have pulled unit before discharging capacitor first. Used a ratchet with rubber handle to discharge capacitor but did not explain using a screwdriver and having a rubber handle when doing this. Very low rated film. Hope no one gets shocked cuz your no teacher for sure.
