How To Change Plow Shares

A tutorial on how we change plow shares, also called plow points.
Recently a viewer asked if I could do a video of the process of changing out plow shares. This particular plow is a Oliver but the process is similar on most moldboard plows.
I hope this is helpful to anyone looking for information on this subject.

Those cushion trip Oliver plows have a neat trick to tip the bottom up and make it easier to work on. You pull back on the rear roller assembly, then lift the bottom up, and put a punch or rod through the sub frame to hold it up.

Now that is smart on Oliver’s part! Thanks for pointing that out Chris, as I said before......you are a wealth of knowledge.

Steve: I went back and reviewed this video before changing the shares on my F-145 and was surprised to find my bolts came off with just my Dewalt gun. (Maybe dumb luck?). I really appreciated your tutorial. Shoups came through for me and I didn’t drop the plow on my head😉.

That is lucky, seems like every time I do this I get set up bolts/nuts and end up breaking or grinding them off. Shoup is a great resource Thanks Dave

Torch, beat, repeat on the next 5... Then try to get all the holes lined up on the new ones... YES!! ALWAYS block it!! Looks like you've done it once or twice... Lol👍

Well, that’s great stuff Steve. The last plow like that here was when Glen was little. He remembers it being n the scrap pile. Boy would we like one now! Take care, Annette🌺

How's she goin'? Nice job changing these plow shares. It's great that there are several places where a guy can still get these parts as the plow frame itself will outlast us all probably eh!! Take care!!!

Welding or cutting those old bolts off is a great idea. It's easy to cut a finger if someone were to try and hold them and loosen the nut. I still call them points as well. Great info 👍

That is a really nice plow Steve....They say a Oliver/Case plow were the best and easiest pulling....Do you have any idea why they used left hand thread on the bolts-nuts? Thanks .....
@AnglesideFarm
@AnglesideFarm 2 года назад
Thank you, yes I’ve heard Oliver plows pulled the best regardless of which tractor pulled them. I have no idea why they were left hand, I hope someone can give us the answer. Thanks for watching as well as commenting, I appreciate it.

OEM Oliver shares had the bolts permanent. Moline, IH, AND JD have replaceable bolts. Probably left over from the days when the blacksmith sharpened them at least once a year. Thanks Steve.
@AnglesideFarm
@AnglesideFarm 2 года назад
Now that you mention it I do remember seeing some many years ago that were permanent You’re welcome and thank you for the comment. Dad used to take bean knives to our local black smith to hammer out numerous times. A lost art anymore

Good educational video. Now if you plow enough every year and you wear out the shares in a season, those nuts come off pretty easy. Just take a wire brush to the threads first. Seemed like I did that a lot as a kid. It’s a good thing the nuts always came off easy, because we never had a torch back then, or an electric hand grinder.
@AnglesideFarm
@AnglesideFarm 2 года назад
We didn’t plow enough in a year I guess. We chisel plowed a lot more than moldboard. If we were turning hay ground under to plant kidney beans it was moldboard, corn, barley and bean ground were chisel plowed. Thanks for the kind words and support Jeff.

@@onehappyfarmer3461 our local FFA has a event in the fall called plow days, that’s probably the main reason I got this plow. Yep you’d look proud as a ruttin buck up on your Oliver pullin a plow.
