If your bathroom cold taps and WC cistern are slow running, then here is the way to get high mains pressure running and very cheaply.

Great video, thank you! I have a blue mdpe 25mm pipe going to the stopcock under the sink, would you reccomend the mains going upstairs to be in 15mm or 22mm? The upstairs has a shower, basin and wc. Downstairs is the kitchen sink, washing machine, handwashing basin and a mini basin in the garage. The boiler is also downstairs. Currently mains goes up to the tank and feeds upstairs. I want to remove that tank and go direct. The current pressure in the bath is terrible.

Keep the mains 15 mm.

Nice one again Al, just wondering but is it a bad idea to do this on a non-electric shower? I only ask because I thought a shower with mixer needed the lower pressure of the cold water tank to match the pressure from the HW tank? Our heating failed recently so we used the immersion for a few days, I noticed how the shower pressure was a lot worse. The HW tank normally is set to 55C, but the Immersion was probably 70+, so I guess that would mean less hot water was called for. It's weird because I'd have thought then that more cold water was called for, which is higher up (attic) so it should be at slightly higher pressure? Unless the hot water pipe is a smaller diameter pipe....as you can see, I'm confused why! Cheers, Chris

If your shower is fed from a roof tank then you may need to put a mains cartridge in it. This video was just about those with the bath tap basin tap and WC being fed from the storage tank. The pipes to your shower would have been reduced to 15 mm to fit which can cause problems, but more than likely the cartridge was calling for less hot water and more cold, but the cold from the tank is, or may have a valve fitted somewhere causing a restriction in the pressure. Check for isolation valves.

@@dereton33 Thank you very much for that, I know I went on a tangent but it was sort of a similar subject. I'll certainly look closer at the system, seems like a DIY job...or a plumber was doing a favour for a friend and did as cheap as poss! Keep up the good work 👍

Why as a keen ( not pro) plumber does the original F and E set up even use a the header tank for cold water supply upstairs?My system is F and E as such but the header tank in the roof only serves to refill the compound hot water cylinder as it is used.The other smaller header is for the central heating.

It was a popular council requirement back in the day, for new build houses. This meant that both the cold and hot were of the same pressure.

Hi. Instead of fitting a Tee to connect the incoming main pipe the the cold feed (shown on your drawing), can i fit an elbow instead?. I'd prefer using an elbow so there will be no water filling the loft tank after i turn back on the mains
@dereton33
@dereton33 Год назад
So long as your roof tank does not supply water to the cold taps and cistern in the bathroom.

My bathroom taps and toilet are mains fed but the toilet takes forever to fill and I think there might be a leak in the pipe to the toilet. Would that explain the slow fill to the cystern? The reason why I think there is a leak is there's a hissing sound below the toilet.

Worth checking, But it more than likely is a blockage in the valve.

I have the opposite problem. Had my system changed from vented F&E to combi and now the taps & cistern in the bathroom make a horrendous noise! Pressure went to 5bar at the basin tap so had to fit a PRV to try and reduce it! Still makes too much noise and would like to go back to having it tank fed tbh! Can that be done with a combi?

Not with a combi. No Jay.

What about poor hot water pressure? Since the cylinder is at the same level as the bath. I guess in this instance a pump is needed?
@dereton33
@dereton33 Год назад
It is the Hight of the roof tank, not where the cylinder is, that determines the pressure. That said, a pump is still the best option.

@@dereton33 what's weird is we used to have a hot water tank in the attic years ago. But some work was done in the airing cupboard upstairs to add an expansion valve etc and I believe the tank was disconnected (not been up in the attic, it need a good professional clean). I was young at the time so didn't know too much. All I know is the pressure has never been the same

My mom n dads house taps all come from tank in the loft pressure is terrible i keep telling them to get it changed to mains

I wonder why houses have a roof tank? It only seems to reduce pressure which no one wants.
@CallumAtwal
@CallumAtwal Год назад
It’s an old thing. Modern houses would take it from the mains. In the early days, water pressure would be erratic so it gave everyone a constant source of water (for baths and toilets etc). I think there are some other reasons too
@dereton33
@dereton33 Год назад
A lot of councils insisted on them in the build.

The reason for the storage cisterns was rather more practical: The water bylaws for London and many other cities mandated them to ease demand on the supply at peak times. Imagine when everybody gets up in the morning and starts drawing off water for washing, making tea, using the toilet, etc., or the similar surge in demand which occurs when large numbers of people arrive home from work and start washing up after their day's toil, preparing meals, and so on. When the supply system is working at full demand, the pressure drops and the rate of flow to each house decreases. The storage cisterns act as a kind of buffer, since they will simply refill a little more slowly than at other times. In other words, you can draw water out of the tank faster than it's being replenished (for a limited amount of time, obviously), thus everybody can get their water but the supply system doesn't have to be made that much larger to cope with the peak demand directly. The cold tap for kitchen sinks was made an exception from having to be fed through the tank, to provide non-stored water for cooking and drinking.

@@davelinkson1 that's a much better explanation!
