In this video Javi is showing a simple tennis drill to help learn to change the direction of the incoming ball in forehand tennis shot. The ball direction can be changed from cross-court to down-the-line and from down-the-line to cross-court. Knowing how to effectively change the ball direction is a basic skill in tennis that allows the player to move their opponent to the other side of the court.
This drill can be adapted to players of any level. A beginner player will learn how to redirect an easy ball without using much footwork. An intermediate player with start learning footwork and taking the right steps to the ball as well as hitting a faster ball. For advanced players we have prepared a variation of this exercise in which she is sprinting and changing direction of a difficult, more defending ball.
At an advanced level, when the player hits the ball on the run, we recommend you do 5 sets of 8 balls each and take a short 60 seconds rest in between. However, for lower levels you can do more sets, between 8 and 10, as there is less footwork involved. Enjoy!
