Pro tip: when you get those little drain bolts out, take them to home Depot and get replacements... But get stainless hex cap screws instead so you'll have an Allen head to with with in the future. Plus they look better.

Great video, planning my fork oil change in the next couple of months. I have a '09 Ultra Classic that has the issue with the ABC wire breaking up under the fairing. HD is offering a 25% rebate on the repair but I'm guessing HD will charge between $100-$200 for splice in a new line. Can you do a video of that repair??

A little tip for the DIY bikers, if you can get a set of gunsmith Phillips and slotted tips or screwdriver sets they are ground much better than standard tools. They set deeper in the screw. Additionally the comment below with the impact tool is also the ticket just make sure the tip is seated correctly. Great video as usual Ryan.

I have an impacted driver just put the correct bit in and make sure it is impacting the right way and pop it lightly with a hammer and it will twist it loose while pushing in. I use the for the old Ford cam thrust plate screw bolts.

With the drain screw carefully removed would it not be a good time to replace the screw with a new screw/bolt for future maintenance needs. Are the fork caps springs to deal with upon re assemble.

Will this be the same for my 2015 Heritage Classic? Looks like there is a screw on the back a each front fork in the same location. Was thinking to draining the fluid because of the age of the bike even though it has low mileage and was thinking of putting in some HD fluid to help with brake dive.

As much as I like the way the Glides look, if I go HD touring it'll be the Road King. It has a lot less stuff to remove to do general maintenance on the forks, neck, lights, & no electronics to go bad.

@vf12497439

My road king had all kinds of electrical issues. Cruise control kept turning off. Clutch switch intermittently worked resulting in only being able to start the engine in neutral. Engine stop switch intermittently didn't work and at times I had to shut the bike off with the key/ignition switch. I got rid of the bike because of the issues. Harley never could diagnose it because of the intermittent nature it never did it in front of a mechanic. My road king layed down on 3 separate rides where it wouldn't start. Towed to the dealer all 3 times and it then fired right up for the mechanic. Was a fricken beautiful bike. I have a 2017 ultra today. No problems...

@@dwheeler016 it was a 2010. Some electrical issue where connections were weak im guessing. Looking back on it I should have kept the bike and at some point the situation could have been figured out. I wasnt financially stable at that time and extra unexpected bills were not something I could deal with. My ultra i have today is an awesome bike. Just too damn heavy.... for now I can deal with it but I can see myself on another RK as I get older and less able to hold up a 950 pound bike😬 lol

I am trying to drain my fork fluid on my Road King. The last mechanic that replaced my fork springs last winter torqued the bolts way too tight. I mean these suckers are seriously torqued. I have tried loosening them with a screw driver and a socket. They won't even break loose and are starting to strip. Any ideas?

I've done countless fork oil changes on dirt bikes and such, and typically you need to take all the weight off the front end because when you remove the top fork caps the forks will collapse from the weight of the bike. From this video it doesn't look like the front wheel is unweighted/off the ground. Maybe HD forks are different from what I'm accustomed to.

Does the new harley need to have their clutch cable lubed? I checked some forum and people say no due to it being coated with Teflon. Also I have the service manual and it never mentioned lubing the cable, only the pivot pin. I called the harley dealership and service guy said they do lube the cable when they service the bike.
@High_Desert_Tanner

My service manual says to lube it. It also calls out for on the maintenance schedule. It also tells you specifically what lube to use and I believe a part number for the tool.

Considering that Harley has used so many Japanese made parts do you feel that you might be better off using a JIS screwdriver on the fork drain plug at the bottom of the fork tube?

I see the bike lift under the frame but did you actually use it to lift the frame of the bike or just leave the bike resting on its tire with full weight? Thank you

Doesn’t work on newer Harleys where “in their infinite wisdom” they’ve decided to eliminate the fork drain. Don’t know for sure if that’s on all their bikes or on what years. My brother in laws ‘15 ultra classic does not have drain plugs. DUMB!😔. I was able to do my ‘12 Roadglide Ultra without removing the tank and I just used a regular socket to get the fork caps out.

i would use the proper amount and just go with the G fluid instead of the E
@DonziGT230
@DonziGT230 Год назад
Depends on what you mean by "stiffer." Adding more oil changes the air compression rate, kinda like using a stiffer spring or adding air pressure. If you want stiffer damping then you'd need to use a higher viscosity oil, not more oil.

This video is totally at odds with the shop manual. It clearly states, the forks have to be removed from the bike, oil dumped out. New oil measured and refilled, and the forks pumped up and down to remove any trapped air. Your video bypasses all of those steps. But in your re-filling step, you show the fork tube off the bike.
