Great video. Nice to see a video like this with a real DIYer, where you are doing the work in your driveway and you don't have every specialized tool known to man. That's how most of us do it so it's really nice to see that so people know you can do your own maintenance, even on a Porsche without all that fancy stuff. Well done!

It’s 2024 and this was a helpful video. The things I needed to see are, “how do I check the oil level?”, “what tools do I need?”, “where is everything located around the engine?”, “what are the specs of the engine: the torque for fasteners, the amount of oil, etc?”, and “how much more oil can I add when it’s at the middle fill line?” and this video accomplished pretty much all of it.

Thanks for the helpful video. One thing to add, put blocks or stoppers at the front wheels so the car doesn't roll forward. great job on the video.

Props to you for having the balls to change your own oil, as most people nowadays are too scared to. Beautiful Por-sha as well (correct pronunciation). Four pointers for next time: 1. Always unscrew the drain plug and filter housing and leave them off for the same amount of time for a proper drain. 2. USE A DAMN FUNNEL!! I almost had a panic attack that you were going to spill that 0W-40 all over your boot carpet. 3. Please do not try to check your oil levels on a warm engine. This is common sense 101. There's a reason that the car computer made you wait 30 minutes, its because when you turned the key to check the levels, you forced the car to go through a cool down cycle before it could get an accurate reading. 4. Please get a torque wrench. Order one from Amazon while you're on there getting the filters. There's a reason dealerships charge so much it's because they do everything with professional etiquette and using the exact tools meant for the job. Try to replicate that in your own garage and you won't be sorry if something does go wrong.
@hdidane00

you should unscrew oil filter while drain plug is off at the same time to allow proper oil drainage. and prime oil your oil filter.

Probably a good idea to use a funnel when refilling the oil so you don't spill in the trunk area. Also a torque wrench is a great idea.

Great Job on the video and thanks so much for listing all the parts needed!! I have changed the oil dozens of times on my Porsches over the years, but I was looking for a good video to share with a friend who wants to change his oil on his Cayman for the 1st time. This video is perfect. The only main difference in routine that I do is that I use floor ramps to back the rear wheels on to and then lift the front wheels up off the ground using 2 jacks so that the entire car is level. This way all the oil drains out properly and less chance of the oil pooling or rolling towards the front of the engine while it is tilted forward in your example. Also, owners check your owners manual for "capacities" for the Larger 3.4 engines and the quarts of oil needed with oil filter change. Great job and thanks again!!

+qikqbn77 Im so glad this video helped! Ill be making a second oil change video in about a month to show how to use wheel ramps like you said (and use a torque wrench haha). I just didnt have them when I was filming this.

+CaymanGarage Nice vid, only other thing I'd suggest is having the oil cap off as you drain, this will help the oil drain more quickly and fully, and help prevent any oil being trapped in a "vacuum" - That's how I always do my BMW anyway and as suggested to me by an ex BMW tech.

One of best oil change vids I've seen. clear and comprehensive. only thing I would add is that its good to run the engine for just a few minutes (so that its slightly warm but not hot obviously) prior to changing the oil so that it drains easier and more completely...

I enjoyed your video. It was concise and informative. You were inviting comments and I have to say that I have looked at others who have made dozens of videos on various subjects and your first one out-the-chute was better than many who have made in some cases, dozens of videos. Of the many RU-vid faults in the RU-vid universe I have seen - a camera view that goes every which way, sounds of airplanes, wind, anything to distract the viewer from the subject, and my personal favorite, the actual critical operation is not shown and the host just says "it was easy - you will figure it out". As I mentioned your video was concise and to-the-point. I'm a long time Mercedes owner and DIYer and I have to chuckle at the reliance the Germans (or just Stuttgarters?) relay on all things requiring an allen bit socket. You explained the need to have that at the very beginning. At the very beginning you explained well the tools needed and it was off to the races. Only thing as a viewer I might have changed - or added - was to introduce yourself at the beginning! Been thinking of getting a Cayman in the next year or so and have been looking at the Cayman videos here. I cannot believe that they would have an oil fill location surrounded by nice carpeting. Personally I would use a funnel and have a clean plastic bag to wrap around that funnel when done. If Some Cayman owner hasn't spilled oil on the carpet I predict that it is a matter of time. All modern Mercedes allow extraction both from the pan and through a suction device such as a Topsider through the dipstick tube,. The pan is designed such that if the car is level all the oil will be extracted from the tube. However since the Cayman has the oil filter underneath there would be no point in exploring this. Anyway just wanted to thank you for the nice informative video. Your effort and planning has shown through.

This is awesome! I have the exact same car, just in black and i treat her like my baby. I did some of the work with him but feel like I forgot how to do a majority of it......hence me selling the car and not worrying about the expensive maintenance costs........anyways I'm reconsidering now...your video work and instructions are awesome and are much appreciated from a fellow Cayman owner. Great video. I was 911 shopping, and have changed my focus to the Caymans. I always watch to see how hard basic maintenance is before buying a car. This is easier than changing oil in my STI. Thanks for the heads up, I did subscribe as I hope to be getting a Cayman S soon. But as an old gear head, just fyi if you didn't know. Warm oil drains better. I drive mine, let it cool for 5 min., then drain it. Also, the dirt, microscopic metal pieces, whatever makes oil dirty, allot of it is in the last bit of oil coming out, so I personally let it drain what can seem like forever. Plus if you let it drain while your putting the filter on, it doesn't take so long. Someone else mentioned a little oil on the seal, I agree, a little Mobil One everywhere is good. I also wipe the drain plug clean, pour a little oil in the cap, wash the drain plug in the oil, dry it off, then dip the threads in the oil and let it drip. When you get ready to install the plug, it's got a nice thin layer of oil on it. Thanks for the tips and keep them coming as I will need them. Also, I've read the pre '09's had bearing problems. Any info. on that as I'm looking at a good '09 to get to avoid that. Thanks.

Good for you changing your own oil. It's amazing how few people can still perform this basic task. Spend your money on good oil and a quality filter and do it yourself. Nice work. That is not really a crush washer and it dosen't really need to be changed each time. Its just an aluminum washer and the point is to just have no leaks.
@zach4172
@zach4172 3 года назад
False. The more you use a drain plug washer, the more compressed it becomes which in turn means you 'll have to tighten your drain plug more and more every time, resulting in a possible stripping of your plug threads or oil pan threads. Both will be way more expensive and a hassle to replace than a 10 cent washer. Never reuse washers. Thanks

From a fellow Cayman owner (2007 Cayman S, have owned it for the last 6 years and do all of my own maintenance, minor and major) - here are a few additional tips for you to make your life even easier. I’ve done about 10 oil changes in the time that I’ve owned my car. 1: DON’T Jack the car up, back up on ramps. It’s faster, safer, and you will have plenty of clearance. This will also pre-warm the engine a bit to thin out the oil when you are getting on the ramps. It will also keep the car as even as possible. 2: USE A TORQE WRENCH!!! They are cheap, and if you plan on working on your own car you should definitely have one. You are torqing down to an aluminum oil pan as well as a plastic oil filter housing. You do not want to over-torque this OR your oil filter housing. Both of them have very specific torque figures. 3: There are some better choices of oil. Mobile 1 isn’t bad, but I personally prefer Liqui Moly. 4: Use either an OEM, Mahle, or MANN oil filter. They are good, and probably cheaper than the K&N you used. Don’t forget to lube the o-ring PRIOR to putting it on the oil filter housing - you could tear the o-ring otherwise. Use a dab of old or new oil. Pre-fil the oil filter housing as much as you can. Your filter screws straight in, so you can put a decent amount of oil in the filter so you don’t starve the engine for a second with the new oil. 5: Check the oil level BEFORE turning on the car first to make sure you haven’t put too much in or to make sure you’ve put enough in. After you check it and idle the engine, go back and repeat this procedure after the oil drains back down into the pan. I hope you enjoy the car. I’ve put over 40,000 on mine in the time I’ve owned it and I have done jobs as small as an oil change to as large as the rear main seal / clutch / flywheel. It’s an EASY car to work on compared to the many VW’s I’ve owned and worked on.

Peter thanks for the tips! Just bought a 08 Cayman S a few weeks ago. I will be doing another oil change video covering the things you mentioned and a few others! I also will be doing a few bigger Maintenance videos (pullys, water pump...) soon. Id love to do my clutch and flywheel! I'll reach out for tips when I do

Great video. I'm looking to purchase a Cayman in the future, and would like to do some of the maintenance myself in order to keep the cost down.
