How to change the spark plugs on a 175-300 HP Mercury 4 stroke. My Mercury 300 HP 4 stroke was running rough and not firing on all cylinders. After we changed the plugs, the engine stopped running rough and Mercury 300 HP fuel economy drastically increased. Mercury says the change the spark plugs every 300 hours. I have 210 hours and one engine started to run rough and fuel economy was terrible. The one engine started to shake about 30 hours ago and that was the initial sign to change the plugs early. I called a mechanic and they suggested I change the spark plugs on the engine and he does them every 100 hours. My new plan is to change the plugs every 200 hours and have an extra set on hand if I need to change them more frequently. The manual says to change the spark plugs every 300 hours but that might not be soon enough.
