Dang 8 years later and these videos are still helping people like me thank you for posting them man, I messed up a little the first time putting it back together I forgot to tighten down the fan casing then had to do the process all over again but thanks to you I revived my good ole ps3
Opened up my FAT after 6 years due to the fact that the thing would just shut down after some time. First thing Ive found was a forest of dust and cleaning it wouldn't solve it. Saw this thermal paste replacement video and the big boy came back stronger than before.THANkS A LOT! No heat pistol crap needed unless you fried your gpu or cpu.
Just wanted to let you know that I applied new thermal paste to my PS3 last night. First time I ever did anything like that and it went smoothly thanks to your super detailed and informative video. It was really awesome of you to post that. Big help. Thanks!
Definitely! Your intro tune almost had me skip over your video all together - I cannot stand music overtures and no communication, these are supposed to be reference guides and not music symposiums.
Thank you so much for the video. It saved me a lot of time. One recommendation for everyone out there, you might want to replace the battery on the motherboard. It is a CR2032 and make sure to get a name brand. They are not that expensive. Considering the age of the PS3 it might be overdue.
@@gilbertdomingos9700 i just performed the battery change; the only difference ive noticed so far is that on the first startup after the change you have to input the date and time. other than that, all your save data and preferences are saved on the HDD, so nothing is lost. Ive experience no issues so far with replacing the battery
@@Adam-cj2jg i think they're talking about the PS3 PRAM battery, which i think keeps the internal clock going, even when the ps3 is off. Search up "PS3 PRAM battery" and you should find it
This is fantastic. By FAR the best tutorial for taking apart, applying new thermal paste and putting back together video on RU-vid and anywhere else. Thank you so much MoosePhorus. You just earned a new fan and subscriber!!!!!
The absolute best PS3 phat video out there for thermal paste removal and reapplication. Super clear, concise, and superb narrative! Liked and subscribed!
This guy is doing it wrong tho... The PS3 paste issue sits below the CPU covers, that paste has to be replaced as well people, otherwise you're doing it for nothing... Trust me, I've got years of experience in PS3 repairs
@@Geert890 I'm curious what you mean here... all the videos I've seen show the same process as this one. I'm planning to attempt this for the first time soon. Do you mean there is additional paste that needs to changed elsewhere in the console? Thanks.
@@briankelly9414 The chips have paste on top, but also inside themselves. Like a regular intel CPU these chips have a metal cover on the top. in the ps3 the top cover of the chips has to be removed as well, because the paste inside is also dry, unfortunately.
Got a fat ps3 from my cousin, thing hasn't been opened in a while. There was a ton of dust inside and a few screws missing, cleaned the whole thing out but ran out of thermal paste midway through applying. Very good video, had it not been for it I wouldn't have known there are fine threaded screws and probably would have messed something up.
Just found a used Fat 4 USB PS3 and this video is AMAZING! Will need to clean it out and and re-do the paste to make sure it lasts for years to come!! Thanks so much dude!
@@TheKANTUS101 yes! Thermal paste changed and it ran well. I recently sold it to help fund PS5. I have a retrotink so I can play my old ps2 games on it.
@@mikeydubs_tv I got a launch model 60gb ps3 last week, and man it’s been so much fun. It gets kind of loud with the fan at points, but it never goes full blast with the fan. It’s been opened before so I wonder if the person who owned it before has changed out the thermal paste prior. It’s never shut off during gameplay, just the fan is kind of loud at times lol. Is this normal ?
@@mikeydubs_tv awesome news to hear !! I have it on my open entertainment center all by itself so it seems like I was doing all the right things already lol.
I've just reapplied the thermal paste and reassembled my PS3 with this video! Proper detailed video.... All you need to sort your PS3 out! Thanks a bunch!
the M stands for machine, the type of threads on the screw. the larger ones are 'coarse' threaded and the fine threaded small ones are 'machine' threaded
11:10 that's the amount, like a laptop, maybe just a little bit more. That's all you need, aside from that, keep it clean, organize your screws as you take them out so you don't get any when you mount back. Great video
one of the better ps3 disassembly videos on youtube! used your videos as reference today on a ps3 fat and didn't run into any issues. everything seems to be working as it should now with the CPU temps hovering at around 72 degrees instead of 79+ degrees which was causing it to shut down. the old thermal paste was almost non existent after 16 years so i was lucky that permanent damage wasn't done to the chips. might have to do another round for my ps3 slim next but it doesn't show any signs of overheating so i might let it be... for now. cheers!
Much appreciated for the very helpful and easy to follow instructions video. I was nervous about taking apart my ps3 and everything by myself but your video was a big confidence boost. 10/10 👍🏻
The “M” usually stand for machine screw. That’s what those fine threaded screws are. I took a couple apart. Their slightly different. But this definitely helped re assembling. Thank you!
I usually do not comment on RU-vid, but I have to this time... Awesome videos! Your sound and camera work is super, not a lot of noise, music or heavy base; just super to follow and understand. Your explanations are great! No matter if the viewer is skilled or a novice, there is nothing left to question and you're not left wondering, "what did he mean". I'm not the type to watch videos, but usually just tear into things and do it; if all else fails I can always go back to a video. It is like the people who read instructions if they really can not figure it out for themselves. FIVE STARS When are you going to do a video on the PS4?
Thank you for making this video. I took apart my PS3 following another RU-vid video at the end of the video he turn off the camera and didn't shown how to put it back together. Thanks again
thanks man. years gone by and Sony getting rid of the PS3 store.. jailbreakers coming out of the wood work.. and your vid is still more relevant than ever. thanks bro.. PS. "M" etchings mean "Machine Screw" - the finely threaded bolts are machine screws. :D
This vid and the disassembly vid were both hugely helpful for me while I was working on replacing my thermal paste! Put some Arctic MX-4 on there, and it's a lot more silent during gameplay, as well as less possibility of imminent YLOD for my phat.
THANK-YOU MoosePhorus!!! If a novice like me could do it, anyone can do it with such clear, step by step directions by you!. My PS3 is alive again! !! Ur my hero! Like tOtally!
Got a fat ps3 80g unit from a pawn shop. Opened it up and cleaned out all the dust, from top to bottom. Runs like a charm I am amazed how quite the fan is. I don't think I will change the paste might bugger it up. Will use it as long as it runs. But right now I am happy with its performance.
thank you, bro had removed, my ps3 fully i waited for my thermal paste to be delivered. this is the perfect video to start with to put back the ps3 together. 🤗
Thank you so much for this video of putting the PS3 back together again. I ended up with 5 screws after I put it back together but everything works and it is a lot better than I would have done on my own. Thank you!
The m stands for machined screw.... that is what sony is calling the fine threaded screws. the coarse threaded screws are a self tapping screws designed to cut threads into the plastic standoffs of the frame. :)
If you do this and the fan still runs full blast then you may need to delid and apply to the ihs because that is probably in the same shape as what is between the heatsink.
I'll definitely keep this guide to rewatch in the future in case of thermal paste being dry once I do get the correct backwards compatibility model of the Fat. Thanks for sharing! Liked and subbed!
Great video and all but there's one thing you didn't do that I would recommend everybody do if they can. You will need to replace the thermal compound underneath of the integrated heat spreaders, yes I'm talking about those silver things you see that you're putting thermal paste on top of, you need to put it underneath of it as well
@@DavidZheng well you should fully dismantle the console to the point where you get to the motherboard before applying any thermal paste. I would simply remove the heat spreaders first, apply a pea-sized underneath the heat spreaders. And ask for on top of the heat spreaders I would simply recommend going with a simple X and add a small but decent sized pea-sized dot In the middle. The cross is just to make sure that the majority of the heat spreader gets covered and a pea-sized is what's really meant cool it. If he using the thermal Grizzly stuff just apply it like the instructions say, their stuff spreads pretty easily.
@@DavidZheng if you have the tools you really should take those metal plates off of the processors & apply thermal compound underneath of them. If you don't have the tools to take those off don't worry about it and just do your normal method of putting the thermal compound on top of them quade.co/2017/ps3-delid-ihs/
Thanks MoosePhorus. my ps3 was slightly different may answer why i have 2 small screws left over however works great now. Was shutting down after starting and the fan was spinning that fast im surprised the ps3 was not in a hover. can hear a slight buzz from the fan now. great video easy to follow.orange is lava classic.
Oh, there is a screw above that blue disc I was wondering where do I didn't screw it last time Today I will be changing thermal paste so I'll check it out
Good reminder on the dot method. Gonna do this tomorrow when I get some more paste. Just replaced my battery and cleaned old paste off. Hopefully battery replacement fixes the update hang 8002F1F9 error code I'm having. If not, I don't know what else I could do. I read it could be a bad HD, but I think the HD is fine. Move controllers would not work and wireless internet would not connect. If the battery does not fix that, the whole board may need to be replaced. 16:00 my antenae is different. There are 2 connectors that end in a 2 metal clips which attach to the housing. No coil.
Great video - first was hanging on GT6, removed hard drive and tried to dd it (bit for bit copy command line tool), and it borked halfway through, replaced with an SSD, then GT6 took FOREVER (30+mins) to load one race, then froze for ~30s at a couple points in the race - changed thermal paste (thanks again!) - hangs loading a race on GT6 again, tried a game only on hard drive, freezes for a few seconds, but not really bad, then tried Netflix app, image freezes once in a while, but audio is perfect. Afterwards, MUCH MUCH quieter. Burn-in time, or bad GPU/motherboard? Already pretty sure my GT6 disc is borked...
Great Advice! I have to back and properly grease a few systems I left the old thermal paste on thinking it would be fine (dumb arse!). Must be why my switch is still overheating even though I greased the fan but left the half dried up paste on it.
I did all this today and cleaned everything properly fresh paste and properly spreader and working 2 minutes of gameplay my ps4 shuts off and blinks the red light can’t figure out what it is , maybe bad fan or something on motherboard took a shit ? This is the reason why I searched for this video to properly dismount and mount and I still have the same problem so dust isn’t the problem.
Changed the Drive of mine some Years ago and now i want to put new Paste in it and also change the damn Battery, but Heck, so many Screws. Some are gladly marked by Sony ^^
Thumbs up..but, I'm still shutting right back down.. **Edit** it shut down the first few times I tried to power it up. But now it's running smoothly!!!
I’m hoping I put enough gold paste I followed everything in your video, earlier I pulled the PS3 apart and got to the heat sink the paste was damn near burned onto it, it’s a good thing I got to it before it got worse so now the system should not be pushing out so much hot heat but like I said I’m hoping I put enough paste. I got my game system from a friend who got it from a friend it’s the 2008 PS3 so yeah the paste probably was replaced once because the heat sinks were bent so I refix them and everything should work perfectly, I did repaste and old laptop first about 3 or 4 months ago it was over heating now it’s running cool with gold paste that I order off of eBay it came from a business.
Followed this exactly but it still beeps and shuts off no fan nothing turns on, it goes from green, yellow, then red blinking light in less than a second. Could it be the power supply or should i just toss it out?
if you have a fat backwards compatible model you might wanna do this about every 6 months, you could do a year if your a gambler, i'm not, then again if you have one that's still working, you probably already knew that
Great video set with the diss-assembly being one and the thermal paste application & assembly being another. My PS3 lives! I just have one problem, I have lost 2 pieces of the foam tape stuff like you mentioned not to lose in this video. lol One was last time I dusted & one was today. It was so bad I just tossed it today. What is the ruberized/foam tape stuff called so I can order some? Where's a good place to order it? Thanks man!
yo homie nice video, so what brand of thermal paste do u recommend?? i dont mind buying the really expensive ones as long as it will last for longer say 5-6 years aint bad!
As someone who hasn't taken apart anything electronic in over a decade besides my PC, I'm amazed and kind of appalled that they made it so you can't access the board or even remove the fan without peeling the heat sinks off first. I'd ask what kind of sociopath designed that, but then I remembered that this is the PS3 we're talking about.
Hello, just bought a ps3 fat that had been used only too archieve about 60 Audio cds. So it wasnt used for gaming. I think therefore its a pretty nice piece to keep it alive. What else do you recomend me to do if i tear it down? Is there some other components that needs a new thermal paste? Ive reed in the comment section that if the fan still screams you need to change the thermal paste on the IHS(or whats the name of it) too? Can you say something about that? Thank you!
Only other thing I could think of are the thermal pads. I've never replaced them but I'm sure they dry out. There usually little spongy rectangles on a bunch of chips on the board.
A word of warning regarding thermal paste... check the strength of thermal paste you are using. I bought some for my PS4 and it was still sounding like a jet taking off. Sounded worse than before. Almost totally damaged the PS4. I started to do some more research. I then found that I had used weak Thermal paste with low conductivity and there is many strenghts. The one I used had 0.982 W/m-k Thermal conductivity... which was useless. I recommend you get a more popular and proven brand. Arctic Silver MX-4 (which is newer version of the popular Arctic silver 5 paste) This has a level of 8.5 W/m-k which is about 10 times better than the one I used...lol. So check the conductivity level. After replacing a second time it now with the Axrctic MX-4, it no longer sounds like a jet taking off and have had no problems since. Going to do this on my 2 PS3's now.
I did this exactly the way you said, followed the video step by step. My ps3 is still shutting off when the game starts. Any ideas on what the problem is? Does it continue to shut off the first few times?
Hey Moose. I'm thinking of following your tutorial and im using Arctic Silver 5, people think pretty different when it comes to thermal paste and I wonder, do I have to wait for the thermal paste to turn the ps3 on? It would be really helpful if you could respond and since this video is getting old I wonder how is your Ps3 now?
Hi i just put new thermalpast on my PS3 CEC-HL04 and have question, after I finish assembling got me left CU coller any ideas wher it's need to be? I dont see it in you video :(
wow mine never came with that heat sink and fan set up but mine is the 2nd gen phat ps3 model that came out out a year after they released and I'm surprised mine still works xD
only thing I have different is there are a few pads on top of other chips. not on yours, so I guess they are not needed, well, hope so, no idea what they are
Hey man, love your videos bro. I've had my super slim PS3 for 6 years or so now and the graphics are getting VERY bad, so I'm wondering if this has something to do with the thermal paste not being changed all these years??@MoosePhorus
Did this last week. After about 3 days of much quieter fan noise (no jet engine), faster and smoother gameplay my phat PS3 randomly YLOD on me 💔😢. Air from the fans was lukewarm, I think the capacitors are fried 😔
