This stuff is my bread & butter - before you dive into the whole "It's dead! Bin It!" thing - check out the wiring loom thoroughly. Many many VW 1.9 TDI "Faults" including no start, bad start, "It's dead FFS!" are wiring related - the loom is not as durable as the metal - you will get loads of "This engine is toast!" hints that are actually wiring related. I've stripped down a lot of these - the metal in them is good - excellent even - but the wiring lets them down. Before you yank it out - make sure it isn't just electrical gremlins. Even with 400k the innards are usually alright - but the ancillaries are shot. Poke ALL the ancillaries first before you yank it. :-)
For real though, your energy level and enthusiasm is awesome though. You definitely did a good job for someone who figured it out as they went, reminds me of some of my times 😂
In many cases torque settings are only there to make life easier for beurocrats and lawyers. Unfortunately once the manufacturers provide a torque setting people in a profesional setting have to abide by them or risk law suits. Some manaufacturers are providing torque settings on domestic electrical fittings meaning electricians are having to buy torque screwdrivers. and have them calibrated every year.
Hi great video I have a 2006 Audi A3 2.0 tdi I want to swap engine with a 170 bhp 2011 economical it’s low on tax probably give better mpg is this possible?
@@css403 Both, Just starting and stopping using the biotuning kit, as described in the conversion video. That said, we don't often do much city driving. normally motorway or 60mph limit rural main roads...
@@FloweringElbow what type of oil do you use ? Do you also have filtration system for used cooking oil ? I am very interested into this Thank you for your time for reading :)
Should of got you to swap out my 2005 touran engine, left it with the local mechanic and he's had it just over 4 months now, don't even know were my car is as he has sent it somewhere else to get the work done, good job on the caddy starting to wish I had tried myself now probably would of fixed it an all by now
Hey Mark. haha, a good idea? I do not know. If you will enjoy the process, I'd say 'yes'. If you are just looking for results, well then I'm not sure...
Hello my friend, I'm watching you with love, you're really good at your job. I have a request from you! I have a 2009 model Caddy 1.9 TDI BLS motor vehicle. Do you have the service manual? If you have, do you have a chance to send it to me? It's not in turkey, I searched a lot, but no. take it easy, greetings from turkey...
7:42 That catalyst is probably coked. I gutted mine. You can just drill it out from the top through the opening and hit it with a chisel. All the material comes out the downpipe. Make sure to wet it, or run a hose on it whilst breaking apart the material.
I bought a golf Mk6 back in December 2020, previous owner never changed oil and he never told me.The car developed oil pressure after 2weeks of driving, next day I went to garage, they changed the oil and I received a bad news... the oil previous owner used was extra thick probably gearbox oil to hide the rod-knock noise, that way he was able to sell the car.I was advised to change the car or engine-£1,200 for labor 😔. My questions are: -do I need to code the ECU? -Do I have to send any paperwork to DVLA,if the engine is basically the same? Great video 👍
Hi there. Sorry to hear about your Golf. I didn't send any paperwork, assuming the van was basically the same. Whether or not you should tell DVLA I don't know... I didn't need to recode ecu...
Was so bad ;) now it's fixed anyway. Tandem pump seal blew, sending diesel into the oil. Filled the sump and caused hydro-lock and extreem ware on the cam shaft lobes because the oil wasn't oil anymore...
Still running! No issued that I haven't mentioned here - save for mild anxiety that 'something' might go wrong at some point. About 15k miles on filtered waste veg thus far... and boy am I glad I'm running it right now. Just to fill up the aux 25l diesel tank is costly atm..
Good morning Veggie oil burner. I've had to pause from using myself lately , but plan on resuming in near future. I need to have a designated, rodent, & bear proof bldg 1st.@@FloweringElbow
Hi, I love the video but I'm a bit concerned that you have used a BLS engine, are you going to replace the con rods? My wife had a Touran that spun a crankshaft bearing and smashed the connection rods to pieces filling the sump with shards of metal. Just don't want this to happen to you after all your work. It seems to be very common on that code. I spoke with the garage a local VAG specialist who said that this is common with that BLS code. Just thought I'd warn you but I'm sure that you are aware of this
Well Done! I have a 2.0L TFSI engine that i have to remove from my VW Golf MK5 Gti because i need to look inside the cilinders. I think i will use this video as a example. Thank you and keep going!
Great video, this made me dare to do mine. A bit more fiddly as it has AC but I managed to unbolt enough stuf so the whole front can swing away to the left (as seen from front of car). My BLS threw a rod at highway speed leaving a fist sized hole just behind the oil pump 😢
Recently purchased a 2013 Golf Tdi that had already threw a rod also. I wonder what was the cause? Hopefully with regular scheduled engine oil & filter changes, warm ups before driving, future rod breaking can be avoided. When my health improves, can't wait to finish fresh engine install. About 70% finished currently picking away at it as a little time opens up here & there.
Hey.. Great video 👍excellent job well done.. Could i ask what mileage the engine you put in had on it? Also the flywheel i think you said would not come off old engine you said holes did not evan line up? Is it possible i might have this problem on the second hand engine i may get? Thanks for the video and all the effort in giving the torque settings.
Hi Frances, good questions. The new one was on 60k when we got it. It is possible but unlikely. In fact it is more common for the engine to come without a clutch or flywheel I think. I asked for them because I knew our dual mass was on the way out/gone...
Hi mate, did you remove the full wiring harness from the ecu? Or only unplugged the sensors/wires from the engine and left the loom with the car. Cheers
Hi. Have you replaced with the same engine code? I am interesting to swap my 2.l sdi with 2l tdi. How many things needs to be changing? I have the donor car complete. Thanks
Good morning. Thanks for the detailed explanation. I live in Nova Scotia and about to remove the engine & transmision unit out of a 2013 Golf TDI wagon. What part of the UK did you film this? I spent childhood in Lymington near Pennington. Cheers
Hay there Cathal, Yeah, I used the clutch plate from the engine I was replacing. And the duel mass flywheel from the new one. I don't remember using any special tools apart from a torque wrench...
How did you detach the exhaust from the turbo? I've managed to loosen what seems to be a ring clip but the only other (10mm) bolts I can find aren't vey accessible and seem to be part of the turbo assembly not the exhaust assembly. Cheers!
Hey there Jevaweva. From what I remember it was just the ring clip. Don't quote me on that though as it was a long time ago. Good luck & let us know what you had to do in the end...
Hi. First of all, congratulations, you have a great job.My Vw T5 1.9 axb motor vehicle. engine block cracked.I want to install a 130 hp 1.9 TDI engine. Which engine would you recommend?
@@yasinozkan9313 I installed a BLS - mainly just because that was what was there in the first place and we found one for a good price... Best of luck with it.
Step 23: Turn engine over and clearly hear the low compression on one cylinder 😕 EDIT: I posted this before seeing the glowplug code, my bad 🤦♂️ sounded like it on the first crank!
Paul, am in awe of your diagnostic skills 👏 👌 Wish I had the experience to tell this kind of thing from the noises. All just sounds like rumbling to me, starting or not starting 🤔 Thanks for watching 👀 🙂
Hi Fr 240. Good question. I don't remember it being much of a problem. Essentially just using the hoist to wiggle it into roughly the right position so you can put the bolts in lightly... Then wiggle jiggle and tighten alternating bolts until all are at specified torque.
One garage quoted me £ 1,200 with cam belt and oil change. Some VAG-garages specialists will charge you £1,900---->£3,500 and engine overhaul £ 3,500----> £5,000. Crazy money 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰

Well done for a 1st go very impressive Only things I’d have done different for anyone thinking of tackling this Do driveshafts 1st, crack the bolts loose on the hubs while it’s on the floor. Remove them fully as gives more clearance when removing engine. Along with better access for disconnecting turbo Do all the stuff underneath BEFORE you drop any fluids. Your never going to catch all the oil, brake fluid, coolant etc. So get it all done while the floors nice & dry. Downpipe, sensors, shafts out, crack off gearbox steady but don’t take out until same point you did As you say take the slam panel/rad pack off as one. No need to remove alternator & starter unless your transferring to new engine. If transfer yes easier to do them while engine is still bolted in Main pain in the arse is the 2 bulkhead heater matrix pipes as you said. Sometimes there a doddle. More often than not they don’t want to come off. Sometimes easier to start lifting engine out/away to get better access 👍
