How to safely charge a Maxwell Bcap300 2.7v 3000 farad supercapacitor + a capacity test
Update: didn't perform as expected so my buddy sold them and didn't use them long. Also, as many in the comments have pointed out, you can charge these with more amperage.

I have one bank of these for 500 farads in my truck. Does more for stabilizing my voltage “than any number” of regular batteries would. Granted, my stereo system is just a little 3500 wts RMS 🙂

Caps are great for their capacity to deliver heavy amp loads for short intervals. As someone else has mentioned, these caps can deliver up to 10,000 amps each at dead short and you have basically 6x this figure ie, potentially around 60,000amps at 12-16v at the bus bars if shorted directly. My thoughts are that this would be an excellent cap bank for a hybrid/ battery solar system as the caps will allow a much greater starting current ability for use with an inverter when starting up heavier loads like motors, fridge, air con perhaps, etc, especially when some of these loads could possibly start in unison at odd times. The cap bank will greatly alleviate the heavy spiking loads that can harm the batteries and possibly the inverter.

man, you can charge these caps with a few hundred or even thausends of amps without heating them up! Each is able to deliver 2000 Amps continuesly! The max. short circuit current can reacht 10.000 Amps for a single cap! You should know about the datasheet when manipulating with that mass of super caps!

Yes for certain the could be charged in a second flat, actually. 833.3 ms utilizing a X-Former capable of delivering at least 37.5 KVA. With an output of about 20 VAC @ RMS of 14VAC feeding some healthy thyristors... Maybe a dozen of those 70mm. 1,100 TZ Infinion's. In a Delta configured bridge with, Duty control PWM regulated by set voltage cutoff. Doubtful, it would take even 40 Hz to slam them full. Giggle, but CAUTION when selecting your sub cycle surge current overload fuse... Wouldn't want to be off by much more than a few thousand A either way... Giggle.. Yep, we sure could slam them full in a hurry.. But I admire his slow but sure initial testing. Nice handy work on construction, besides the longer Delta ( t ) span, the more resolution accuracy. The tie blocks were nicely machined, nice work, nice proto work... After reading about 27+ pages of the actual product Spec. Sheet from MFR, and a review of nice graphed response plots, one can come to a conclusion that expected cycle full load response curve plot shows that 0.2 Hz or 5 second cycles are expected under normal use. A few comments in this batch I saw along with some others in another video also showed some confusion when folks use the series Aiding math. The standard formula for series capacitance does not truly apply here, it's more involving ( dt / (Vmax - Vmin). Not as a function of (Z) and (Xc) in capacitive reactance, because "Taou" or one time constant for this ultra cap is one second, and they certify it's performance half point at double the internal resistance on the curve plot on p. 26 clearly. Exposing this device to a ripple voltage, would cause internal heating.. In fact it behaves more like a series inductor than a capacitor in a frequency response curve ending abruptly about 10.6 Hz.. They did 70% rest to load duty cycle plot.. Again 5 (t) is required for any cap, so 5 seconds. This device is an amazing little package, if used properly, a time and place for everything in it's place.. Giggle.. These work wonders coupled with battery as a (dV / t ) surge buffer or stabilizer to eliminate surge flow through PV distribution combiner buss etc... Also great for high current short demands with DC BUSS inverters, and VFD's. We use them for charge cycle flow surge current suppression, "coupled with a high C. Cap bank" to handle instantaneous, current surge, allowing the ultra cap 1.5 to 2 time constants to begin responding, extending it's life cycle.. Caps in conjunction with this ultra cap and a good AGM telecom battery bank, are amazing.. We also are developing a true hybrid, using known technology, time proven.. Telecom batteries have a solid 20 year float life rating.. They also have a very flat. 0.5V. Vmax 13.1V. to 12.6V empty.. Keeping buss Voltages stable, exactly what the inverter Dr. Ordered.. Giggle.. Key note here, if your seeking long term low current battery backup, with capability of periodical. High current or dynamic range, yes.. A million rated cycles, beats the panties off any known chemical batteries, hands down , safe compared to Lipo, as also lithium's require maintenance, inherently temp. Unstable, fire hazard, a time and place for them yes.. RC's , drones, power tools, even gadgets... Yes.. Folks are quick to forget Boeing's little mishaps with a couple 787's still on the ground.. Giggle.. Sure thing Elroy, it takes time and $$$ you don't have to work out safety issues.. Just be safe and have fun, if you have an idea, then go for it, give it a whirl, also share your research and ideas, it how we got here to begin with... I will post more as we go forward with our green power hybrid, coupled to a CAT. C-1. Purely or emergency reserve uses only.. A poly phase 460- -480VAC vector duty motor taunted into generating poly phase power back onto our own grid as then charging multiple array of 24 - 48 VDC @ 1200 Ah bank. Giving us 28.8 KWh per day storage for overnight usage. We have 30 KWh daily PV in our array, but at 24V BUSS. We can only harness, 27.6 KWh per day currently, hopefuly by he time we refit before reaching, Cape town , SA.. We will have another shipment of another 1,200 Ah of telecom batteries to add. Three banks ensure we have already reduced daily cycles to 1/3 or even every 4th day.. Enacting a 70 HP severe duty Vector motor, enables us to cruise adding extra speed day or night to our sailing Kts.. Also those pesky doldrums are no longer relevant, 3+ kts efficiently in no wind... The CAT C-1 is backup gen drive, or direct drive... For medical emergency flank speed ran devious for medevac pickup, or possibly to out run hurricane. The hybrid VFD , driving the Vector motor, is caoable of double current for 2 minutes with no damage for critical maneuvers. Impulse power for crossing a bar gives us, 140+ SHP at the turbine. Far unlike the 55 to 65 actual HP from the original Perkins 85 HP installed back in the 1970's... Rated for 31 BHP @ 1800. RPM the C-1. Is much less thirsty, and efficient by a factor of 4+.. Again only if there was an entire electrical failure for catastrophic reasons onboard we have viable backup direct coupled mechanical drive. But utilizing the C-1 as alternator through another 20HP or 40 HP poly phase motor to then power the VFD directly, a separate system, much like a locomotive, or combined with bank A or B or BOTH adding instantaneous Vector energy in the hundreds of HP for critical maneuvers for up to 11 seconds per pulse.. Also increasin the diameter of the old wheel, from 24" to 26" giving it better traction with enclosed turbine style band ring keeps flow contained in thrust vector with more than double the compressor elements possibly 3 x factor traction. Ultimately at a point later this season we will haul her our and install an upgraded shaft and bearing system, but for basic use and especially drogue generation use under full sailing, it will add to our regen and charge capabilities. These super caps will be tested in several modes, as portable storage for our hybrid green power dinghy, also primarily as charge balance and bank charge flow control buffers, as also for surge stabilization with our 3 KW inverter and our 17.5 KVA Furonis 480 VAC industrial BUS for ships systems and VFD systems.. An in the field research project onboard a research sailing vessel... We will use our Maritron system to log all data, to ships database via the NMEA 2000 network and our Ethernet... This should be productive and yield a ton of good data.. Tens of thousands of sea miles ahead, other research involving sea mammals is my priority actually, but along for the ride and contributing to the effort where I can when I can... Pursue your dreams, enjoy each day, anything is possible if your mind is open to it.. We were not meant to be slaves to energy corporations, banking cartels, or restricted by any government we empowered to begin with... Think big, it's time to change this mess for the better and our grand children. Be safe...

From just looking at caps put into car's many ppl don't realize you need to limit the current BOTH charging and discharging or you will have lot's of sparks to say the least. Maybe a 12v battery sitting in the middle of the sparks. Great vid. Thanks.

I have 6 of the 1500 Farad BCAPs as my starting "battery" in my van. They've been cranking it up reliably for over a year now. Maxwell sells a balancing kit for them, it replaces 3 of the bus bars with a printed circuit board. You'd have to try really hard to overcharge one cell though, the maximum voltage of 6 in series is 17.1 volts.

Read up on capacitor ESR. A set up like that has an ESR in the tens of micro-ohms. There"s no way your little charger will heat your cap bank more than some teensy, hard to measure theoretical amount. Head-bangers use them as DC blocking caps for kilowatt audio Amps. Experimenters start diesel truck engines and spot weld with super caps. A bigger concern is balancing series super caps. They have wide tolerances. Unless they are carefully matched or connected to a charge balancer, a series string wont charge equally. You need something like a Li battery balancing circuit to ensure charge sharing. Also I suggest cross-cell shunts for cap arrays in series-parallel connection. . Be careful there. Big super cap arrays are capable of thousands of Amps instantaneous current. You're a fumbled pair of pliers away from a major fireworks display. I suggest you keep your charged super cap array in a lidded plastic storage box unless actually making connections.

Buy a 1000 watt high pressure sodium ballast transformer. Cut out the secondary coil carefully without damaging the primary coil. Wrap four gauge wire at about 14 to 16 turns on the secondary side. Buy a 400 amp bridge rectifier and you’ll be able to charge those caps in maybe a couple minutes. Cheers

A 12V halogen light bulb between the baterry and cap pack would be enough to safely charge the caps from zero volts. The bulb would get 12V at the beging and the voltage drop on it will decrese as the caps would be charging.

Also, I have seen a single row of these Capacitors (6 caps) start a huge Steiger Articulated Tractor with no battery, and a single capacitor vaporise an electrical screwdriver @ 2.7v, so this is a huge cap bank, especially for audio, I would imagine a single row of these caps would be more than enough for even large audio systems, as you can pull about 2000amps out of a single string for a short time.

One really need to run the output through a watt meter to record the total watts. because even though that fan drew 1.1 amps at 12 volts it will draw less as the volts of the caps drop. the volts and Ah will drop linearly together. Each of those 3000F caps will have the equivalent energy (close) of a double AA alkaline battery 3Wh If you got the voltage to its max of 16V. Best way to use the full power of those Caps is to use a Boost converter that will boost the voltage (as it drops) to something usable. Assuming you want to use these as a battery. All those Capacitors are going to provide up to 108Wh. But because the voltage drops as fast as the current is used it is hard to make use of that 108 Wh. Nice thing about these Maxwells Boost caps (I have 24 of them I have experimented with) is they hold their charge for Months at a time without self draining. As expensive as they are you really have to have a specific use for them to make them worth the cost. Like needing a tremendous amount of amps for a very short time. So if you want to sue these as a 12 volt battery you really need to have a Boost or a buck boost converter regulated output found cheap on AMAZON or Ebay.

That's right, first thing when I watched this video I thought about the same. These capacitors should be paralleled with some resistors (can be small wattage high ohms resistors) to make voltage even on all capacitors. Taking into account that voltage is low (not higher than 2.7v), I think resistors can be about 10k. If voltage will be too differ resistors change resistance to lower.

I have been trying to find any data on storage life issues at low voltage. Do you know for certain that the storage life does not drop if you let supercaps discharge all the way to 0 Volts? If so, where have you seen this data? My real concern is more regular full discharge in normal use, for extended periods of time. It costs $ and complexity to avoid full discharge, but for many types of batteries it has to be avoided. I understand these are not batteries, but they do involve chemistry, sort of, as well as physics, while ceramic caps, for instance, are only about physics.

Discharging is not linear for capacitors !! so your formula is completely wrong. To calculate discharge power you use formula Jules = 0.5 x capacitance in Farads x (Max Voltage squared - Min Voltage squared). This will calculate how many jules of energy you used. Jule is same as 1 Watt per 1 second. For example, if your starting voltage is 12.85V as on video and ending voltage is 12.5V, and your total bank capacitance is 3000F, then “Watt seconds” = 0.5 * 3000 * (12.8^2 -12.5^2) = 1500 * ( 163.84 - 156.25) = 11385 Jules (Watt seconds). Now let’s calculate your fan Jules usage per one second: 12.8v *1.1A = 14.08 Jules. Now lets calculate time how long the fan should spin when voltage drops from 12.8 to 12.5 on the capacitor bank: 11385 Jules / 14.08 Jules = 808 seconds which gives us 13min and 28sec. Take into consideration that your multimeter is not professional and probably not calibrated, so the measurement could be off by up to 5%, there are other resistive loses in cables and connections, your 3000F bank your be not perfect as one capacitor can be off, and also your fan is not a perfect load as it varies depending from voltage… The calculation is for perfect system, but in reality none is !

@michaelcaprice8142
@michaelcaprice8142 5 лет назад
YES, you might need to bypass some regulation circuits on the Ev. But just as these kick in to supplement when the battery and cars power fall short on those brief heavy base driveing needs. Capacitors are ideal in solar use. They have the ability to absorb even below micro volts that would be far below levels required to charge your battery. There are buck converters using this to harness power from a micro turning fork generator from the vibration of car traffic on bridges for use in monitoring sensors.

@elmerkilred159

Okay, so you trickle charge capacitors for 3 hours to get a full charge of 12.8v (is this charging faster than an actual lead acid battery?) You get about half of the output in time 1.6Ah burning on a 1.5Ah fan. Is there any way you could open up the Ah input without damaging or popping the cap? 3hrs is way too long. I thought the whole point of having super-caps was for the extremely fast charging and discharging rates.

Capacitors do not compare to lithium batteries. Cars are using capacitors to supplement batteries for SURGE considerations, not continuous energy sourcing. Capacitors are good for providing an initial blast of current so that the lithiums will not have to. It supplements the energy stored in the batteries. Placing a small fan as a load is only going to mislead people into thinking cpacitors are comparable to the energy storage and longevity of batteries. Folks, don't be fooled by any misunderstanding derived from demonstrations like this.

0:29 Wrong, Completely wrong, in series your voltage goes up and capacitance stays the same so, effectively you have 18'000 farads worth of caps @ 16Vdc capable of delivering a couple of thousand amps in case of a short circuit. In parallel your voltage stays the same but you capacitance goes up.
@colbiesthename2875

Putting capacitors in series drops the capacitance. The formula is 1/[ (1/C₁) + (1/C₂) ... + (1/Cₙ) ]. Same formula as resistors in parallel.

Yes, I did this on my first system, my pole barn, small inverter system + powering 12v inside lights & outside motion lights. Simply make the caps last in your series bank. I took a 12v LA and parallel 16.7v 6-2.7v 500caps. been running now on it's 3rd year. I believe caps works as a shock absorber / filter regulator to the LAs.
