In this video I show you how to chase a masonry wall using several different methods, by using a multitool, an angle grinder, and a mallet and cold chisel. I show you you how to fit a metal knockout box including how to drill the wall and secure it using wall plugs and screws, and how to fit the capping or conduit into your chased wall.

Mate I've just moved into a new place that needs loads of work. And I'm trying to do as much as possible myself to keep costs down. I've watched so many of your videos (and will refer back to them when i need to) and they're awesome. I like the fact that you don't gloss over things, you say it how it is and show us. I'm actually able to do a lot more than I thought and part of that is because of your instructional videos! Pouse, you're a legend! Thanks SO much!

Thank you for this video. I am aiming to chase a small length of wiring into a concrete wall. I wondered if you could comment on an additional challenges of chasing into concrete (as opposed to plaster / brick). Is it the same, only requiring more muscle, or is it a different proposition altogether? With thanks.

Thanks for this. My 1960s house is rendered brick and they’ve run the cable diagonally down the wall and just clipped it to the masonry and plastered over it. Not even in a straight line either - all over the place.

Tidy, covered all the points. Another way to secure the oval capping is with ‘all round band’. Does mean more holes and plugs but it’s very solid and the plasterers like it.
@strongerandwiser2023
@strongerandwiser2023 Год назад
After you use the multi tool its a hell of alot quicker using an SDS with a chisel bit on the end. Half the time specially when chasing the brick out for the back box.

Me and my pal had 4 bedroom town houses 3 floors on 800 quid a house. All chasing and all capping. Don't get me wrong those prices where miles out from where they should be, but can you imagine this guy chasing concrete block. It'd take him a week to box a house,but to be fair itd be very neat 👏
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 года назад
To be fair I'd take the grinder to concrete block on a renovation. I'm living in this house with a family, I wanted to keep dust to a minimum plus the old lime mortar is prone to popping so I had to be careful. I guess it's horses for courses! Thanks for the feedback 👍

I need to spur off from a cable which is in the wall. Coming from outside to the wire in interior wall. When I cut the existing t&e there won't be any slack to connect as you recommend with the wago connectors (3 blue in one 3 black in another etc) what can I do if the existing cable dose not reach wago? Thanks for your vids 🙏 subd

First thing you should do before you start to cut is turn off power to the existing switch and unscrew from wall just to check cables are not coming across or if coming down never take for granted they are coming down straight

Could you have left the conduit exposed i.e not chased into the walls and have the light switch flushed into the wall(some chasing of wall to do) or have both the conduit and light fitting not flush to the wall(no chasing into the wall to do).
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 года назад
Yes, you can just use trunking but it looks a bit scruffy in a domestic property. That said it does the same job, makes less mess and if white plastic on the walls doesn't bother you then it's a sensible solution. It's also easier for repair and maintenence as it's not buried in the wall. Thanks for watching.

Tanx for the upload what size conduit did you use
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 года назад
I think that one was 20mm wide but I was using 3 core and earth cable. If using 1mm or 1.5mm 2 core and earth cable you could go smaller. Thanks for watching!

Will the cheap 60 quid anglegrinder from argos do ?? Also would you also do a stud detector first ?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 месяца назад
Yes a cheap grinder will do. Titan from screwfix are cheap and good. Just use a good grinding disk, although a diamond disk is pretty cheap these days on amazon. As for stud detectors, if you have stud walls, then it'll just be plasterboard on timber which you can cut with a plasterboard saw, no need for a grinder. My wall was masonry in the video. Hope that helps.
@therealdojj
@therealdojj 2 года назад
What cutting blade did you use on the multitool please? Thanks
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 года назад
It was just a cheap timber / metal blade that had already been worn out. Although you can buy diamond tip ones that will work well.

Yo Pouse, when putting finishing plaster on top at the end, is mesh tape needed to prevent future cracking along the chase?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 года назад
Yes, scrim tape over join between old and new. I've actually filmed the prep but not edited or uploaded yet. I used two lengths of scrim one down each side of the chase over the bonding plaster which I used to fill the hole. Hope that helps. Best of luck.
@wassupjg

@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Thanks pal, yet another gr8 vid from you, but none of the other tutorials are saying to use it which is strange, maybe it's not really necessary?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 года назад
@@wassupjg I always scrim over joins between two surfaces prior to plastering over the joint. So this can be before bonding plaster, or before final skim. So in this example, I pva'd the chase, filled with bonding, let it dry, then scrimmed the joins and plastered over with multifinish. Personally I think it will crack if you don't. But it's up to you!

Very neat and tidy work mate but imagine you doing a house on price. Get the angle grinder out
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 года назад
I agree but firstly it was my house, bring lived in so I was trying to keep the mess down, secondly I have old mortar on the walls and go to hard and it will come away from the wall causing a much bigger job, and finally I did resort to the grinder as seen in the video. I guess the point of the video is there's more than one way to skin a cat! Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching 👍

Lovely video. Why didn't you just go into the other switch? Double switch? Please. And get the sds on the wall?!
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 года назад
SDS would have taken chunks of old mortar off an old wall like that which would have created unnecessary work. We're not all butchers like you! As for the other switch, already a lot of wires in there as it's a 2 way circuit, so thought separate switch was best all round solution to keep job clean...ish and simple. Now stop watching videos and get on with some work!

Are you using a grout removing bit for the multi tool?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 месяца назад
Yes, it's just an old grout or metal bit. Obviously this is old lime / black mortar on a victorian house. If you're going into masonry, better to use a diamond disk with a disk cutter as seen in the middle of the video. Hope that helps.

When your house is made out of paper then Yeh this helps. But unfortunately most old houses are made out of bricks. I can take a full day to chase out one socket even with an angle grinder and drill with chisel. Fortunately this house is made from paper mache.
