1. Make sure your vehicle is off and your engine has completely cooled down

NEVER CHECK WHILE VEHICLE IS HOT
Today we will be showing you how we checked the level of antifreeze, or coolant, in our vehicle. We first show you in a 2003 Chevy Cavalier and then in a 2012 Honda Odyssey. Always make sure your vehicle is turned off and has COMPLETELY cooled down. It is very important that you do not check the antifreeze while the engine is hot. Always consult with your owner's manual to see how to fill the antifreeze and what kind of antifreeze you need to buy for your car. We hope these tips will help you as you check your antifreeze. If you have any questions, leave comments below and we would love to answer them. I didn’t even know the owners manual had specific liquid types for your car, i thought you just had to ask which on you needed lol, good info !

What if my coolant reservoir isn't clear and can't really see where fluid line is? Is there any way to tell? I tried using a flash light but the container is a solid color like and not transparent.

Do modern cars need anti-freeze? Coolant cap does not say anything and I have started my car in below freezing temperatures before without any problem? Also it had sat for almost 24 hrs in below freezing and I checked the coolant tank and it did not look frozen. And what temperature does coolant freeze? I am from the south and we never use or have I heard of anyone putting anti freeze in their car before. 😢

I am having a hell of a time bleeding the air out of the cavalier. I feel as though i get air trapped behind the thermostat. With cap off I rev the vehicle up to get air bubbles out, I will see the coolant begin to surge into the reservoir and hear a knocking sound coming from radiator to the reservoir, and I see where coolant is flowing through the hoses and through the system. As soon as I put the cap on after I assume that the air is gone the hoses begin to collapse. Especially the one that is higher up on that black tube? Why would it do this? Cap and reservoir are new.

@AM Thanks so much for your question. One thing you can try if you have no already is to find the 6mm bleeder hexigon shape screw in the top hose area and open it, run the car and add coolant till it starts bubbling with coolant. close bleeder when done. I hope this will solve the problem and hopefully you subscribe to big Al Repairs.

@@BigAl-1 I have used the bleeder screw during the bleeding process. I often hear hiss but as soon as I turned it that is when I saw the reservoir surging and bubbling out like a volcano. Is this normal?

I got a sign where it said check your charging system then it said check engine temperature when to autozone and had them test my alternator and battery they say it's good but still the signs show up that means I need to put oil and antifreeze right ?

I have a Pontiac as well looks exactly like yours when you open the hood up that antifreeze part that's by your screw will you screw the top off does that connect to something it's a hose right there where does that hose connect to

What antifreeze would works all with a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500? The vehicle was a gift from my uncle who unfortunately lost the owner's manual.

That is a great question. Dex-Cool. Dex-Cool is the antifreeze recommended by General Motors, the company that makes Chevys, as the best antifreeze for their automobiles. It is an orange color, to truly differentiate it, and is an extended-life coolant, known to work up to 100,000 miles. For Honda Civis the coolant is ALWAYS in the front correct? I dont wanna mess this up

Is there a trick to getting my cavalier reservoir cap it just spins forever

@Terrahawk2003. That Is a great question. Unfortunately I no longer own a cavalier so I'm not able to check that out. You should go to your local auto parts store and they can answer that question. Most of the reservoir caps that I have worked with do seal and they do tighten up. Some of them will make a clicking sound and that means that it is sealed. They are very cheap to buy and you can get them at Amazon or your local auto parts store. Thanks again for your question and hopefully you subscribe to Big Al Repairs.

@kingbattle. Thanks for your question. We were just topping off the coolant so we it was not drained. If your coolant needs to be replaced then you would need to drain the coolant and then refill. Thanks again and hopefully you subscribe to big Al Repairs.

@@jasminm9633 Great question. You can check your owners manual for recommended mileage and time before it needs to be replaced. You can also use an antifreeze/coolant tester that you can purchase at an auto parts store. Thanks again for your question.

@Rose. It depends on your mixture of antifreeze to water. You should always use a diluted 5650 mixture of antifreeze to water some brands already diluted or they will give you concentrate and you dilute it 50/50. You should never just add water unless it is an emergency and you don't have to drive very far. Thanks for your comment and best of luck with your project.

As long as you have the right, mixture it doesn’t matter if you put it in the reservoir or the radiator. It all just ends up in the same place.
