Question: What does the dipstick of a K-series engine tell you? Answer: That a K-series engine has a dipstick. 😊 (I still love it whatever its little idiosyncrasies)

Congratulations on another great video. I've owned 2 k series and quite familiar with them by now but unfamiliar with sigma /Duratec it's great you guys are doing these videos.. As they say every day is a school day!! I'll be giving you a call when I'm ready for my next seven 😉

Hello, thank you for the video. I have a 2019 420R Duratec, dry sump with a dipstick attached to the cap of the tank. When the car was last serviced I checked the oil level using the dipstick the day after the car was back home, so when the engine was cold. The reading on the dipstick was within the high and low marks as you might expect. Now, less than 400 road miles later, and after about three weeks without driving the car, I can see oil at the bottom of the tank but it doesn’t even reach the dipstick. It doesn’t leak so I’m 99% sure it has enough oil but not according to the dipstick. I encountered this some months ago and added some oil and was told at the service that it was a bit overfilled, not that it matters too much within reason. The question is, is it normal for the oil to drop to a level undetectable by the dipstick if the car hasn’t been run for a while? (And a question for Caterham Cars would be why can’t they make this easier?!)

Hey Mark 👋 Sorry we missed this comment; you need to check the dry sumped Duratec when it’s warmed up, so ideally just after a good run out. The level will change as it cools later, yes. We’d look at the level related to the baffle as mentioned here.

Visual size difference in the pedal box area between the standard and sv chassis would be helpful, maybe even a full s3 v s5 episode

Nice! We have a planned film on “setting driving position”, so stay tuned for that. Next week’s film covers a minor, but interesting, fact about s3 vs sv chassis too …

Throughout 40 years of driving, I've always checked a car's oil level when the engine is cold and not running. So this video is a surprise to me. Does this information say I have always done this incorrectly or is this something specific to Caterhams. What about the old Ford Crossflow?
@turn7caterham
@turn7caterham Месяц назад
It depends on the car Andrew, as we show here 😊 If your car hasn’t blown up in the last 40 years we’d say you’ve been fine 😂 It’s perfectly ok to update knowledge and change the way we’ve been doing something too.

My 2006 K Series 1.8 has a plate saying check oil when hot with engine running. Any thoughts please?
@turn7caterham
@turn7caterham Год назад
Is it wet or dry sump? 🤔
@alasdairsmith8485
@alasdairsmith8485 Год назад
Wet.
@turn7caterham
@turn7caterham Год назад
@@alasdairsmith8485 That plaque is on almost all k-series cars, both wet and dry sump. It's an old Rover thing and divides opinion even amongst pros 😊 All the training we had at Caterham told us that although technically correct, it would never be accurate as the oil pumping around the engine splashes all over the dipstick. Hence the advice is get engine up to running temperature and then check the oil immediately after switching off. Hope that helps 😃

Thanks for clearing that up. I always thought it was an odd one. @@turn7caterham

Why don't you know the basics? The K series should be checked when hot and running, as per the plate on the rocker box. The information you are giving is now all in question as you can't even get the basic oil check method right!!! Waste of time video!

Well that was a bit harsh for first thing in the morning 😢 *plays sad trombone* Tell you what, why don’t you try checking the oil level with it running, and check it again immediately after turning off…

Oh, ok, I wasn't being abusive or using foul language. But surely the stickers on the rocker ox are there for a reason. You shouldn't be telling people to 3: check it with the engine stationary, should you? Perhaps more investigation into how to address the problems, rather than just trying to benefit from the hits you get, eh?
@turn7caterham

It’s all good, no worries - hence lighthearted reply this morning 😃 The thing is, with the engine running oil just splashes all over the place. If you check it *immediately* after turning off (yes, from warm) you’ll find you get a more stable reading. Times change. Our knowledge improves, processes can be honed 😊
