Thinking of getting an SDP-2 Stage piano from Gear4Music. Is this a good starting point?
@PianoFromScratch

@@MrPaulinspain Looks like it ticks the main boxes, full size, weighted keys etc at a more affordable price than a roland/yamaha/kawai for example. I haven't tried this one myself personally so can't say for sure but my guess would be that the sounds and feel of the other brands would have the edge but as a first piano, I expect this would do you well.

I didn't even have mine on the "possible" list because it was 3 times my budget. I put a search alert in Gumtree and waited. After 3 months and missing some and seeing hundreds I found a white Roland HP603A. I got it for less than a third of the retail price because no one wants a white piano. It had very little use. The original purchaser's child didn't get through preliminary. It sounds great, has escapement action and the Bluetooth means I can listen to your tutorials and myself play all through my headphones or its speakers. You can get used to white, almost.

I bought an M-Audio Pro Keys 88 from eBay 3 years ago for £45! Weighted Stage Piano (that weighs a tonne!). Wasn’t too impressed with sound so bought a Yamaha p-50m sound module for £30 from eBay which made a big difference. I’m currently looking at upgrading this though, as the area I play in is often inhabited by my children lol😅 so i was looking for something lighter and possibly battery powered. Was considering the Kawai, ES120 or possibly Roland FP 30 X I think or Casio s3100 as it has battery option. I would say 90% of the time I play with piano sounds and the occasional electric piano sound as I do like my 90s trip hop. Do you think it’s worth upgrading from my m-audio stage piano for the sound (although i could get a midi soundset i guess) and the better action as I’m not 100% sure just yet whether to take the plunge or wait a bit. And if so, which of those pianos do you think would be a good investment, I can probably get away with £700 or £800 before my wife gets upset LOL. As for skill level…still very much a beginner lol😂

After a month of doing research I bought a Yamana P125B. It is fantastic! The feeling on the keys and the sound on that piano and a real one are so similar. I practice on the digital piano and have no issue playing the same songs on a grand piano.

Really helpful advice, thank you. I have just discovered your channel and love the clear, helpful lessons. I'm 59 and always wanted to learn the piano/keyboards. Cost and space are issues and I play guitar so I bought an Alesis Q88 MK2 midi keyboard and play through Reaper daw and free Bigcat Salamander Piano virtual instrument and a Yamaha TR10 guitar amp. Yes, it is a cheapskate set up but sounds great is easy to dismantle for space and I seem to be learning ok. It inspires so when I get better I will upgrade but to get me started it has been a great introduction to playing. I hope this may help someone. The keyboard was less than £130 so worth a risk from my end and i haven't been disappointed. Keep on rockin' and enjoying the pleasure that is great music.

I had always been told that one should never use a guitar amp with a digital piano because the dynamic range of a piano is so much wider than a guitar, and the amp will be blown out by it. Is there something about your setup that negates that concern? You sound like you know what you are doing, so I am asking out of genuine curiosity for how it could work

I went for the Alesis Pro Recital. It's not perfect but I'm really happy with it having been learning for 2-3 months at this point. I'm only playing for my own entertainment and satisfaction and it more than meets my needs. Very glad I went for fully weighted!

I got a Yamaha P-125, and it is perfect for a beginner I think. However, as I go to my teacher's real piano, it seems like a digital piano's actual weakness is that it's *too* perfect. The keys are weighted, and they are perfectly uniform. You'll never play a real piano that feels like this, real pianos always have some keys that feel stickier or slower or heavier than others. The tone of digital is always perfectly uniform, forever, which again is completely impossible on a real piano. Even when a real piano is perfectly tuned, there are always some notes that resonate differently than others. Like on my teacher's piano, the middle B just somehow resonates off her wall like it is amped, just a quirky bit of accidental physics. And of course, the sustain pedal on digital can never exactly mimic the effect of not just sustaining the notes played but the resonating effect across all the neighboring strings. A digital piano is a godsend, without which I would not be able to learn at this time. But nobody should fool themselves that even the best can really match a real piano. If you are on the fence, you can often find someone who is looking to give away a piano for free, if you can transport it. (Yes, that's a big if)
@pierssegal5910
@pierssegal5910 Год назад
Not just transport it but tune it too. Even a piano in good tuning (which free ones generally aren't) will need to be returned a few times after being moved (even if moved professionally.)

I ended up going with an Arturia Keylab 88 MKII cause I really wanted to start learning piano legitimately. Big dreams of Rachmaninov and Art Tatum haha. So I needed a fully weighted keyboard with a hammer action and 88 keys. But I also like producing and wanted to get back into hiphop and film scoring as well as guitar based music which is my first instrument. It has a nice Fatar keybed and a ton of controls within the daw. I’ve been using Arturias Piano V2 software that it came with which is pretty decent but I’ve recently discovered Pianoteq which by just about everyone in the community, even hardware biased reviewers gets 2 thumbs up and it’s also endorsed by Steinway and a few other big piano manufacturers which I’ve heard is a big deal. So I’ll be purchasing Pianoteq very soon as I agree that the sound can really make a huge difference.

I am a working pianist and grew up in a musicial family. So this is hte thing here. Their are stage digitals and home digitals it is not necessarily the more advanced the digital piano is the more it is going to bee for professional use. If the digital piano has a speaker in the cabinets or on top it probably means that it is a home digital and I actually have that. When you see the piano with a speaker plugged into it it means that it is a digital stage piano. So their are a little differences between a home digital and a stage piano. The home digital piano is exactly like the stage pianos, but the differences are the home pianos have speakers already on board and a stage piano you have to plug it in. Now, for a beginner I don’t want to bee snobby or anything but a beginner should not even bee looking at a digital piano because of the opportunities that they allow the player. Really a beginner should bee using and practicing on an acoustic which you stated everyone can not afford which i totally get,, but their is always an acoustic piano somewhere. Yes it would bee great to have an acoustic in every home but of course that is not always the situation here that I do give you, but with a digital you do not get all the nuances like you would as if you are starting out on an acoustic. With the acoustic the beginner will have the opportunity to work, and learn his or her skill. I am not saying at all by any means that people should not have the opportunity yes. I totally get that who ever wants to learn or work at it please do!!! Please do!!! You should have the opportunity to bee able to experience what it is like to play the piano of course and if you have that passion even better. But for a beginner who doesn’t know nothing about pianos why are you going to just pick up a digital and start working on it. Doesn’t make sense at all… yes. They are less expensive yes. Less money but the argument here is that well the piano can teach you how to play. No…. This is a myth that a lot of people tend to believe. The piano is not going to teach you how to play. They piano is not going to start you on what you should know about sitting at it. With a digital the songs features are their for you to hear as a demo because each and every digital has some kind of demo of what it can do… the piano is not going to show you what you need to do. With a digital you already need to have the concept of how musicians play their instruments. You need to have piano knowledge before even trying to attempt a digital. Let me tell you. The acoustic and digital when come time to play them do not and I repeat do not feel the same. The nuances and actions are totally different. Yes. A digital may feel like an acoustic but it is different to play it. Playing a digital and playing an acoustic is not the same and the play is not the same…. The harmonics, nuances, action, key play, sounds and tone and touch are completely different on the two of them. The mentality a person has to have while playing both is different. You do not play an acoustic like you would play a digital. Their are ways you attack the key that you would not even do on an acoustic. The acoustic as well, is the piano that is going to bee seen in concert halls and recidyles halls. You are not going to find a digital piano in a huge concert hall for the most part because that is where classical music is played and their you are going to find a huge 9 foot concert grand on the stage. Beginners when they do their recidles are going to bee playing on an acoustic anyways. A beginner needs to have and develope the touch and strength in their fingers before even exploring other opportunities which can come in time I repeat in time doesn’t mean that they can’t do it but it takes time so why in the world is a beginner going to just start on a digital piano what people do not realize is that they don’t think of all this stuff that i am laying out which is the complete truth. All they think about is price, and yes the piano plays it self to give them an opportunity to learn. This is wrong…. People should have a start on an acoustic and you can find an acoustic in many places. Maybe a friend’s home grandma’s home school church and other places. This way too if you are learning on an acoustic or just playing it for enjoyment you are not wasting money on something that you don’t want to do maybe. Even you enjoy something like piano playing still you need to start on an acoustic. If you start on an acoustic the digital will come next. Learning on an acoustic piano prepares you for what is to come and a digital piano is going to fee like you are at home but if you just start on a digital it is not going to make any sense and you are going to bee overwhelmed yes. Their are entry level digitals out their but this is not the principal truth here. If you don’t have any idea of how to play a piano and the nuances of what you are playing then how is a digital going to help you. A beginner needs to bee able to feel, and hear the ton, and touch of what they are doing. It is so much easier to learn on an acoustic because,,,, you can have complete control of what you are doing… when moving to a digital the principal is completely different and things change. The way that you attack the key is different. When I start at a very young age with my family playing piano I always had acoustic pianos in the house. And it made more sense. I learned the basic real fundamentals of piano playing by learning and growing on an acoustic piano before ever ever changing to a synth or keyboard or even digital. When I was shown the digital piano it made sense because i was moving over from an acoustic piano and i felt at home. With a digital generally their are more thing you have to do and you have to multi task more so than on an acoustic piano. On an acoustic you are multitasking but their is not as much things to think about as far as switching and putting in voices or patches. Or using drum fills brining in and taking out instruments in a song at the same time that you are playing. On an acoustic you don’t have to worry about all this so this is why I am writing all of this. Take it from someone who is experienced and a working pianist. I am not at all discouraging anyone at all. But you gottta lean from the ground up. Many people and most people these days want instant gratification but it doesn’t work that way. You have to put your time, effort, and hours in piano playing and especially if you are just starting. And also,,,, on an acoustic it is easier to control the keys and hold the key if you are doing drills and runs. On a digital it is harder to hold the key. Yo are going to have more leverage on an acoustic because, the key sits further back into the piano and it much longer with,,, some exception of some digitals but still the digital and I repeat the digital will never feel and sound like the acoustic. I don’t care how high end they get even in the future. A digital piano is not going to replace the acoustic. These things i have mentioned here are things that people don’t consider.
@spaceofsound1

I get what you are trying to convey. Of course, everybody wants to experience the touch and sound of acoustic piano, but due to some circumstances, like budget, logistics, placement in a room, habitat like a house or apartment, big or small, these are factors that need to reconsider first. I am just starting to learn how to play the piano. I'm sixty years old and right now I am looking for a digital piano for everyday practice. I spend a month watching reviews and demos of digital pianos in RU-vid. I can afford to buy an upright acoustic piano but I thought better start with portable digital piano for the reason that there is no place to put an upright piano in my house. Also, portability is one important factor. I'm considering Roland, Yamaha, Kawai. I've listen to the demos of Kawai, Yamaha and Roland. They are all fantastic machines, considering key action, so on and so fort. My choice is Kawai in the ES model, like the newly release Kawai ES120, not in the market yet or ES920 or ES520. Kawai digital piano has the closer acoustic piano sound, key weighted. Roland also is nice but depend on model and specs. Yamaha sound is everywhere, so not so impressed unless it's the grand piano or some synthesizer I could play. If I could learn and play the piano very well, I will upgrade to Nord Lead. It is one of my dream, to play with Nord Lead, NOTHING DEFEATS THE SOUND OF ACOUSTIC PIANO, but I love funky electronic music, so I think Nord Lead is my man.
@benjaminbrown5245

@@spaceofsound1 what you stated here is so true and i do agree with this. Yea. I do believe that a person should have experience in digital pianos of course but for learning purposes the acoustic is where its at but with the statements that you provided yea. That is the down fall for acoustic pianos. So if you have no other choice a digital is going to have to work it is just that when you go to play an acoustic your playing is not going to bee the same you are probably going to have to play a bit softer even though the digital piano’s keys are weighted. Your points are so true on and these were my points as well. A lot of people do not think this way so I do agree with you here for you being a beginner good luck with your journey and I hope that it goes well. Yamaha is really good and the other digitals that you have described are pretty good as well. It all depends on what you want and what is in your budget. Rolland is good but they have more of a concentrated synth feel. They have more of a specialize in synthesizers but yes all those companies do make digital pianos. Well, good luck and I hope that you proceed and are able to get up their and play on a nice acoustic baby grand or 9 foot concert grand someday. I do play both pianos this is how I know these things. Acoustic and digitals do have their place. I do play both. I do like playing both but it just depends on what I am doing. If I am performing, I would rather play on an acoustic which you will find in concert halls. If I am creating music and want help with a bunch of instruments then a digital is great and actually I have a full sized digital at home. I play acoustic pianos at work. But the play if you ask me is totally different. If you go from an acoustic to a digital you are gong to feel more at home and your playing will bee taken to the next level where as if you play first on a digital and then move to an acoustic it is going to feel rather surprising you may not see it as a beginner but even for a working pianist like myself even after playing the piano for all these years I for sure notice the difference. If you have adjust what you are doing when you are playing both. So just keep that in mind. I hope all goes well.

I think having a digital piano too is a great choice. As I am learning I am seeing that the one thing you want to eliminate at all costs is any barrier to practice. If your crown jewel piano is in a location that makes spontaneous practice more difficult, it seems like a great idea to have an alternative in another room that can be more private or otherwise less intrusive on the rest of the family, etc

I am about to buy a piano that is somewhat in the ranks of the Yamaha P45. I can go higher too price wise and now it's so damn hard to chose. Any recommendations?

Hi, personally I slightly prefer the Roland series, the Fp30-x is quite new and it's a bit more the the yamaha but still good value I think, here's a link bit.ly/38XT0hn The rolands have the edge on sound quality and feel of the keys for me!

I was looking for this video long time . you cover more questions than most reviews . specially about the quantity of the keys . Like my case I'm more a guitarist but I want to head up to the producer path. I want to learn some piano for now because I know I have no the space to have a full size digital piano. I have in mind what I'm getting but I found a smaller size keyboard that is portable and has the main thing I want for now. which is familiarise with chords and learn music theory . Definitely I know I have to purchase the 88 keys keyboard. Maybe some of you guys would recommend me better options . I'm purchasing a Casio CT-S400 61 keys and later on I have in mind a Yamaha P150 this would be my beginner keyboards for sure . Would you recommend other options for the portable ? these 2 thick most of my boxes but you guys provably knows a little more. I'm more a guitar person, but I always wanted to compose music with piano.

hi! ❤ so i want to start playing one and i am still unsure. i definitely want to stick with playing once i start. so i sm wondering if i should already buy an expensive one. i defintely want: 88 weighted keys, built in speakers, good acoustic piano sound. also i am willing to pay up to 550€ if it's one that i can use for longer. if it's only a starter one, i'd pay up to 200€. i don't know if that is possible, but i'd appreciate any suggestions. ❤️🥹🙏
